Pushing my boundaries (Wild swimming in Cornwall as a beginner with my Greyhound)

- Our quest today is for a solo wild swim here in Cornwall. I’ve never been swimming alone like this before and it’s now winter, so even though I REALLY wanted to do it I didn’t have much confidence in what would happen! I am a beginner swimmer who really struggles with my confidence and the cold water. As usual with Cornish wind was blowing a gale, but we found another fantastically beautiful spot on the far West coast and I had a cunning plan 🤞

A little about us: I adopted my ex-racing greyhound Miss Nancy three years ago, it was a massive learning curve for both of us and we have become the best of friends, who love going on outdoor adventures, wild swims, van camping and finding vegan food out and about! 😅 Dear Miss Nancy really was on a mission, she was so brave working her way across all those rocks it’s such a tricky ‘beach’ but she was so determined 💔 And sitting there on her rock waiting for me. the best companion a person could have. It honestly is pretty incredible I never thought I’d get so brave, that day really I was so proud of myself 😅

The weather for the end of November is still fairly mild even up here, I was out late last night with the dog and the "winter" skies were crystal clear..
Alfie running round the park having fun, he always has a light up collar now, so I can see where he is.
I lost him once in that park, for 2 and a half hours, when he was just a pup and I was frantic looking all around that neighbourhood for him. I thought my daughter was going to kill me if I came home without him.
I was literally just about to give up and go home alone and he then just appeared out of nowhere. Think he'd gone into the adjoining allotments that I couldn't access little bugger 🤣
Oh my gosh nightmare, thank gosh he came back 😭 you must have felt so awful. I’ve met some people who have a tracker on their dogs collar which must be quite reassuring! And now he lights up the park and presumably leaves dancing light patterns as he runs around which is great!
@@missnancysdayoff yeah lol looks like a flashing disco running by me now ha.
A tracker might have been a good idea. He's grown up a bit now and better trained. I never have him on lead at night times he stays by and listens to commands to stop or go, across any roads.
@stu7575 sounds like a very bright boy. Are you not worried by road though accidents do happen? Miss Nancy has zero road sense even when she’s on the lead she tries to thrust herself infront or passing vehicles so that will never be us 😂 I think her intelligence just shows in different ways 🤭

Hi, great vlog once again and thank you for filming around my beloved Cornwall showcasing it at it's best. I was raised in St.Just and Cot Valley was the beach my friends and family spent many hours on, where you had your dip unfortunately was a sewerage outfall and I don't know if that has stopped in recent times so it may be worth you doing some research if you visit again. If you go to the left of the beach on a low tide is a beautiful sandy gulley called ''Deep Sandy'' by us locals. My Uncle Tommy who was a Royal Marine, swam in there most days of the year and we all learned to swim in that gulley.
Also to the left of the beach is a huge rounded bolder in the sand called ''bubblegum rock'' and it used to have a wreck of a scuttled first world war German U-boat next to it, we used to cut our feet on it in the 70's!
My Dad used to have a small holding further up the valley and farmed it after working at Geevor tin mine all day, he was a legend in West Cornwall.
It's a very special place for me and it warmed my heart watching it so keep up the Cornwall vlogging.

@ThomasTaskis Hi Andy, this was such a lovely comment to read! What a place to grow up, your dad does sound like a legend! Do you still live here now? Swimming in a sewage outfall that does sound like the kind of hapless thing I would do! 🤣🙈 I think the gulley you describe is what I was actually trying to find, I went back again and did manage to see it but I couldn’t see how to get across without getting very wet and Miss Nancy would not have that, is it possible if I hit the tide right? I’d love to swim there. I am so glad you are enjoying the videos thank you 🙏☺️
My pleasure, I sadly had to relocate to Probus near Truro over 20 years ago for my career but I get back home to see my Son who still lives there, I walk my two Labradors down the valley and also Kenidjack and Cape Cornwall. There is a fantastic man made tidal pool on Cape Cornwall beach just off the slipway which Miss Nancy will easily manage, its accessible on most tides. Deep Sandy at Cot Valley is accessible across the sand on a spring tide or if you go across the stream by the car parking and walk over the top and down to the rocky beach you both may find this easier? Check the tides and go at low tide, it's nice and gentle to get in from the little sandy beach and usually quiet during the week days. Also now I live in mid-Cornwall have you visited the tidal Pool at Perranporth beach? Its to the left near the rock with the St Pirans flag flying. Always happy to give advice as there's very few places I haven't visited, happy safe adventures to you both@@missnancysdayoff 🚌🐕🦺🏊♀
@ThomasTaskis I really think Kenidjack, Cape Cornwall and Cot Valley and just perfect, what I wouldn’t give for one of those houses 😍 Yes we swam in the Cape tidal pool the other day it’s really nice! When we went the eco d time to Cot Valley it was a really windy stormy day and I think the water was coming up higher than usual. I did try the path over the river to get down the other side but I couldn’t see a safe way down for Miss Nancy, and sure there are secret ways you know it just wasn’t obviously to me! But we will try again on a non windy day at low tide from the beach. I actually haven’t been to Perranporth at all so that sounds good! I am always keen to hear recommendations and advice thank you, even when I’ve found out about somewhere it can still be very hard to find the pools, I like a challenge though 😊🐕
@@missnancysdayoff We often use both North and South Coast beaches to walk our Labs, usually depends on the prevailing winds and time of year. For the North Coast try Chapel Porth, Trevaunance and Trevellas coves (St.Agnes), Polly Joke near West Pentire close to Newquay. South Coast try the Roseland beaches including Pendower, Porthcurnic near Portscatho and Towan beach near Greeb point. You will soon get used to what are dog friendly and less people milling about. All of the above are lovely for dogs and after watching several of your vlogs I think you will both appreciate them.

🤣 the expression of shock and pain? Ha yes she is all in for the sandwiches love. that dog. It’s true it made me feel so good! What I’m struggling with at the moment is to go in when I’m feeling not that great, which my sister says is exactly when I should to make me feel better. Hopefully I’ll get there! I mean it’s a good wholesome free treatment I’d say 😊🙏

Thank you! The weather to be fair is mild it’s just the wind that is pretty nuts. Is it already bitter up North? It’s true being able to just go out and actually be alive somewhere this beautiful makes life worth living.

I loved the line "I thought I'd stay in longer and see if I acclimatised". Very similar to saying "I thought I might as well stay in and see if the hypothermia started to wear off" 😁
BTW, on a serious note, on one of your clips you showed yourself doing some jewellery making with silver. That's such a rare and unusual skill that it would be really interesting to see a clip about how you learned to do that.

You and Nancy are such a cute combo clambering over the rocks. I guess the trick with cold water plunging is to remain as calm as possible, and somehow convince yourself that the cold is nothing but mere electrical signals from the nerves to the brain. I've been running showers cold for the last minute or so recently but that's nothing compared to outside cold water I'm sure. Hats off to your mental and physical courage.
Thank you 😊 electrical nerve signals to the brain, ok I will try this! Usually my brain tells me that in no way is it a good idea to take off my clothes and get in the water, so I guess I have proved change is possible! That’s brave with the shower, i love nothing more than hot showers, even in summer I don’t really like a cold shower, I think that’s very brave!
@@missnancysdayoff lol nah it's not very brave as in the shower you can gradually increase the cold until you become attuned to it, whereas jumping into a cold rock pool in the winter 🥶 that takes some serious courage 💪

Came across your video randomly and this might sound weird but thanks for being a responsible dog owner (when you saw the scared cat you made sure Nancy left the kitty alone). I had my beloved cat attacked many years ago by a dog and the owner basically stood there and did nothing. You are a responsible dog owner and although that should go without saying it definitely is something praise worthy nowadays in my view! All the best to you from Dan in Devon. Hi Dan! I just gave Miss Nancy. Treat she says thanks very much 😊 that’s an awful story, I absolutely love cats we always had family cats, Nancy is my first dog! It’s my greatest nightmare her hurting a cat. I’m so sorry that happened, a lot of dog owners aren’t at all responsible unfortunately either for their dogs behaviour or the rubbish it leaves behind 💩 I always try to be, I am cat training Miss Nancy as well so she can become a cat lover herself 🤗
I mean she is already a cat lover… but in a different way 😂
@@missnancysdayoff Yeah it seems so common unfortunately for people to be irresponsible for the behaviour of their dogs. This woman basically stood back and watched it happen and I was very lucky to have grabbed "Spyder" to keep him safe and then distract the dog. I love dogs too but this one just had a bad owner for sure! I have never had a dog but my grandparents always had German Shepherds which are such loyal and intelligent dogs. I also love Greyhounds like Miss Nancy; they have a wonderfully soothing and sweet nature!

I've watched a few of your videos over the past couple of days. You seem like you have a really kind soul. Cornwall looks so lovely but please be careful on your walks. With regards to the microphone, I think they sell those little furry things to go over them that drop out the wind noise.

I cant believe how very well behaved Miss Nancy was when she saw that cat! Many greyhounds would have been a bit more reactive to a small furry thing, well done Miss Nancy. And well done for taking the plunge into that rockpool, that looked very cold, I think I would have struggled with that. Nice thumbnail by the way! ;-) Do you choose them or does YT randomly pick them?
I’ve been trying to do some cat training with her! She is becoming way less reactive and easier to distract I’m very impressed with her. We had lunch with a cat at the table the other day and she barely batted an eyelid! And she definitely was instinctively excited by them so it’s great to see she can start to learn they aren’t for pouncing on. Thanks you I still can’t believe I did it I am terrible for saying I’m going to swim then Refusing to take my coat off. 😂 thank you, I do the thumbnails although YT would put in something random from the video if I didn’t.
@@missnancysdayoff Great to hear how Miss Nancy is learning about co-existing with cats. I do hope videos like yours encourage people to rehome more and more greyhounds. They are excellent pets and too often treated terribly as simply 'by products' from the racing industry. They have their unique character traits and are so loving, and make great pets. People think they need loads of exercise but as Miss Nancy so often shows, they are just big lovable couch potatoes with the odd 'zoomie' session here and there. Keep up the great work, Tori and Miss Nancy!
@Trust1878 thank you that is exactly what I hope too, I agree with everything you say greyhounds really are wonderful and they deserve so much more than they often get. If I can get even one person to fall in love with a greyhound at least I’ve made a tiny bit of difference 🙃
Yay you! I'm training for wild swimming in the shower by flipping to max cold, I haven't checked the temp but it hurts and I'm making faces that look a lot like yours 😂

@@missnancysdayoff I just imagine I'm under a water fall fed from a frigid mountain stream! I also like a cold to hot at night, it's great for going to sleep. It's unreal how immersing our body in water be it cold or hot has such an effect on how we feel ☺

It was an Autumn miracle!
I thought that looked familiar. When you get down to coast there at Cot valley facing the island "The Brisons" if you were to walk up to the next point past the big vertical outcrop you'll get to Aire Point and what the locals back in the day (when I used to surf there in the 1980's) call Eagles Beak. Which when viewed from Gwynver and Sennen looks like an Eagles head and beak. We used to dive off Eagles Beak in to a deep round pool below it. That might be worth visiting at low tide. It's on the shady side though and more than deep enough to swim in - quite small 12' across and fairly circular as I recall.

I'd like to swim (or dunk) Lofoten. Beautiful water. Nice sand.
Norway? I’d love to go looks incredibly beautiful 😍
Norway is beautiful just remember to take $$$$$. The water temperature in Lofoten is likely around 5 to 8C in the summer so dunking would be it for me although some hardy types can probably swim for a few hundred metres in it. Myself, I prefer a nice warm Cuban beach where you can snorkel for hours at a time. It is much more interesting when the ocean is alive around you. The northern regions have much less life and usually less clear water. Last thought on swimming, I'm from central Ontario and Georgian Bay has according to me, the best fresh water swimming in the world. Beautiful water and swimmable from mid-June to early October for the keeners. And the islands on the east shore around Parry Sound are lovely granite and white pines. Put it on your bucket list!@@missnancysdayoff
@johnm2879 I’ve heard it’s super pricey, oh my gosh that’s extremely cold I think it’s still 12c in the water here at the moment! Best beach I ever went to was in Cuba, one of the nicest days of my life I think. Georgian bay sound amazing I have put it on my list! 😍
Alright, I have to ask; what was the name of the beach/resort you were in in Cuba? I've been to the eastern end which is gorgeous with lovely hills and mountains while I am not keen on a beach strip like Varadero.@@missnancysdayoff
@johnm2879 I didn’t make it all the way to the east end beaches, I’m not sure what beach it was but at the time I was staying at Vinales in west Cuba, I travelled round a bit for a month 😊

@@missnancysdayoff yes in winter - this is my third year after getting hooked doing a very chilly New Year’s Day dip 🥶 I swim more during the warmer months 😊 luckily live near many lovely places to venture to and still have more to explore especially around Cornwall

I know she is so sweet, doesn’t like to be left behind even if it means a struggle! The greyhound is the sweetest animal ☺️ yes November swimming, the water didn’t feel much colder than summer but the outside temperature 🥶 I am going to try for December!
If you do things that scare you often, you soon overcome your fears, fear means False Emotions Appearing Real. Your mind doesn't remember things in words it only stores them as images, watching TV and films fills your imagination up with lots of fear.
Sounds right to me, sometimes easier said than done but very rewarding ! And as you say it then becomes apparent that there was nothing to fear anyway 😀

It’s funny though, I’ve also seen lots of greyhound living amicably with cats! I e started cat training with Miss Nancy and she has done really well, I’ve been able to pet a cat whilst holding her in the other hand and she didn’t try to get him😍 so there’s always hope! I can dream anyway because I have always wanted cat and dog together! I admit her first reaction is woohoo!

You remind me of this this crazy woman I came across on the top of Glastonbury Tor in the middle of the night during a solstice party. She was allegedly a musician and whilst doing a lot of acid she devised a business plan. Her plan was to record an album, then go and take off all her clothes, and get a photograph of her naked bathing in the White Spring, and make that the front cover of the album. This would then sell millions of copies and make her tons of money. Some guy with her was listening to all of this and saying it was a great idea. I mean what could possibly go wrong!
😂 well not exactly an original plan, but I think it’s worked for quite a few people so was probably worth a shot! She didn’t have much to loose Id say and a swim in the White Spring sounds fun. I hope she made it!
I think greyhound cat animosity has a lot to do with racing greyhound training. The chase a fast small fury electric hare/ rabbit and a running cat looks just the same! Also greyhounds along with other hound breeds have been used by man for centuries as hunting dogs and chasing small animals is deeply embedded in their genes! The leopard can’t change its spots!
From what I’ve seen of Miss Nancy her first reaction was definitely typical dog oh my gosh what’s that it’s an abomination let’s get it! And she kept looking at me asking me come on mum can’t you see it?! But I’ve definitely been able to teach her that actually they aren’t that exciting and they aren’t for her. I actually tell her they are mine so she leaves them alone 😂 They love to chase there is no doubt about that, but she loves chasing other dogs for fun and to show off as much as wanting to chase other animals more probably. I think they can be anything given enough love and training regardless of how they were brought up they are such intelligent dogs 🥰

You should have swung by and picked me up and we could have gone together......NOT! It wouldn't float my boat at all but fair play to you for doing it; let's hope you don't get a chill on your kidneys for your efforts. There's a gorge on Crete called Omalos (The Omalos Gorge.) The first part of the descent was okay but then the floor became all rocks and boulders. I was with other people otherwise I'd have died in there trying to walk over them. I think MN's ready for the old dog's home. Doing those rocks can't be good fo her very spindly legs. They look as if they could snap like twigs. You looked good today, maybe living a more settled life agrees with you?

The amount of tidbits you're always giving her she should be fat with a big tummy on her. I've been doing my keyboard warrior work all afternoon smiting down the unrighteous with my sword of retribution bish bash bosh! The only thing that really interests me apart from you is finding fame and fortune as a poet and writer even at this late stage in my life. It's a pity I never found a wife who could look after my estate when I've gone to my heavenly reward where you never get bored or depressed because there's always some female company there ready to do your every bidding in paradise. Nice work if you can get it. Overall I'd say my luck's improved since I've been in Cornwall, it was absolutely dire before then, Satan's knee was pressing down on my neck all the time.
It's the long term health risks you have to worry about when you're pulling stunts like you did yesterday, at least wear a wet suit, flippers and a snorkel nest time you do it. I'll be too old to push you in a wheelchair when I'm 90 along the prom to St Michael's Mount. @@missnancysdayoff
You could model swim wear with your perfect figure; how many of your fair weather YT followers are still contacting you? None I bet. And I've heard that YT keeps most of the advertising revenue that might be generated on your site? 10 years is all you've got left to maximise your earning potential unless you stand to inherit money and property from your parents? You have to stay positive and practical in this world or else you'll get sucked under like it's happened to me despite my best efforts. I think Corgis would be nicer than an old greyhound; but who am I to venture an opinion? Nobody that's who.
