    Yep! the round brass one if my favourite too, the rest I feel are all hype and you can change blades very easy much more sustainable in my opinion.

    For my pencil sharpener, when i sharpen my pencil, it sharpens it very roughly and the tip of the pencil (wood part) isn't smooth, its rough. Why is this happening????!!!

    Thank you so much for submitting your review on pencil sharpeners. In fact, based on this review I bought an M+R Single Hole Pencil Sharpener (you reviewed the two-hole version) from Cult Pens and I've just sharpened a load of Faber Castell Polychromos, Derwent Inktense and Derwent Coloursoft Pencils and NONE of the ends broke. This is unheard of as not even Derwent's own plastic cased manual sharpener was capable of this, which is why I bought an M+R one. I was fed up of having about 3 goes until I could use each pencil! The brass of the M+R feels weighty and using it was a joy. Sad I know but true. Believe me, your reviews make a difference as I wouldn't even know about this particular brand of pencil sharpener without watching you test one out.:-)

      Jane Metcalfe So happy to hear from you Jane. And also glad the M&R worked out well for you. You can also swap out the blade if it gets dull. Thank you for watching and stay tuned for more. :-)

      Thanks for replying! Since buying the pencil sharpener I've also bought 10 spare blades no less so they should keep me going for a bit. It will be interesting to see how long the original blade lasts.:-)

      Jane Metcalfe That's awesome. I think the blades last a good long time depending on use.

      Owings Art I wasn't sad enough to count how many pencils I'd sharpened the other day (although I was tempted lol) but the blade didn't seem to be affected at all. I can't understand why Derwent's own (also made in Germany, the white 'Pastel' version) was so rubbish. I mean, it's not as if their pencils are the cheapest. Here in England I can get the Derwents (both Coloursoft and Inktense) for £1.30 each on the Pullingers website and the Faber Castells for 99p. I buy the Derwents because they are made only a few miles away from here (I live in Carlisle, just on the border with Scotland) but I find it weird that England's own are more expensive than the imported German ones. I also find it annoying that I can't buy any of the Derwent Limited Edition 'Fashion' pencils individually. They are not part of the 72 or will be added to them anytime soon.

      Hi Jane - I use both Derwent Coloursoft and Faber-Castell Polychromos. I give an edge to the FC Poly's for pigment and the fact their oil based formula seems to blend slightly better. I do think that Derwent is an excellent company though, going all the way back to the Cumberland Pencil Company. I like that they innovate and try new things. If you can get the FC Poly's for 99p, I think that's a great deal. I have family in Co Antrim in Northern Ireland and whenever I'm there I look for great prices on Derwent and FC supplies. Thanks for the notes Jane, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. All the the best - Marty

    Thank you so much for this video! I'm a beginner in terms of using pencils for art and I had no idea that the choice of a sharpener could affect the pencil so much. Time for me to look online and fine the one you really liked!

    I have the gold one you showed which came with a spare blade.
    I was telling Lindsay that I had a clear out of various sharpeners that I had that had gone blunt and the ones I bought to replace them are now showing the same signs. She sent me a link to some electric sharpeners I still need to study.

      Thanks Janet. I always try to use hand sharpeners as opposed to electric sharpeners which tend to eat my pencils.

    I have a electric exacto school pro , it has auto stop, zero breaking on my precious luminance and polychromos colored pencils, neither on a regular graphite pencil. Best sharpener i have ever own.
    In terms on manual sharpener I have a M+R brass squared double sharpener, i can sharpen the blade myself with diamond stones and it is always perfect too.

      Hi Maria - It can be tricky, but go slowly, that will help. Also, it could be a poorly made pencil with bad leads. Try other pencils. Hope that helps, ~marty

    We care for senior citizens that love to use colored pencils. For some reason the only pencil sharpener we have had success with not breaking the leads is an eyeliner pencil sharpener. We have purchased many and have not found another reliable sharpener. The eyeliner sharpener is reliable every time. Why is that?

    Its nice to learn about Pencil Sharpner but you know...
    Most of the children can't handle such expensive sharpner. I have seen many kids loses sharpner every day!!
    We manufacture 2 million Plastic Sharpner every day and our sharpner gives 200 Pencil Sharpening result if good pencils used!!

      Interesting. I learned this method from Dad who was an Artist and it seemed to work for him. People have a lot of good opinions and we won't always be in alignment, but that's okay because different methods might work for different folks. Thanks for asking.

    ***** I'm sorry your settings don't allow me to reply directly to your comments. The Prismacolors are breaking for two reasons. One reason is that the Prismacolors have poor leads now. The quality has suffered greatly in the past decade. The other reason could be that the blade in the sharpener is dull. You can check that with other pencils (cheaper #2's) to see if they're hard to sharpen. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    • @tweetyk474

    Here is the rub! I am a Retired Boeing Illustrator, and in my College Illustration Class, we had a blunt tip sharpener, but it only did standard pencils, no problem! But where is there a good blunt tip sharpener in the world of ART that can do the same as my classroom sharpener...See Conte, Derwent, Faber Castell...ect. Soft Pastel Pencils!

      digiphot2 Hi there - For those you've listed at the end I sometimes use good old fashioned sandpaper. It helps me be more precise. Hi again Marty! I'm about to order some art supplies and a good pencil sharpener is at the top of my list......(I've gotta have something better than a .50 cent Dollar General sharpener for my new Polychromos😉). Anyways I always see that little Alvin in most all of your vids so I looked on Amazon and they DO have it and the reviews are awesome but one "con" that keeps popping up is that the replacement blades cannot be found. Do you happen to know where to find them?

    Like the video and thanks for posting, but do have one complaint. With the green battery sharpener, nobody is going to exert 20lbs of downward pressure on it like you did and stress the capacity of the motor (hear it almost stopping). You made an obvious attempt to deceive on that one. Not that it's a good sharpener, but please be fair and honest. Thanks again for your videos.

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Look, thanks for the note, but you're wrong. There was no deception, the machine is crappy and eats pencils like most machine sharpeners. Cheer up and don't look for wickedness in places it doesn't exist, there's plenty of the real kind out in the world. Best of luck to you. ~ Marty

    The Problem with cheap vs. the Alvin sharpener, is they are all identical..."A conical opening and a screwed in blade!"...Turn, turn,turn...Sharpen sharpen sharpen...Same point and no choice as to how I want my pencil pointed!
    KUM makes a $45.00 same-old, same-old mechanism but you get the feeling that just because it is expensive, it is better! WRONG! It does just like the 25 cent kiddy sharpeners! HELP! Am I doomed to using an Exacto blade and garbage can?
    I have expensive Pastel Pencils and don't relish grinding 90% of the expensive pigment into the garbage!

    • @owingsart
      @owingsart  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      digiphot2
      Hello Again! If strictly focused on design and shape, then technically you are correct, most sharpeners are the same. The flaw in this argument is that it ignores the quality in the tools. For example, a good German sharpener isn't just more expensive, it actually works better in my experience. I've tested dozens upon dozens of them and I can assure you, quality does make a big difference. Less breakage, sharper points, shaping and precision are all improved with a better quality German made sharpener than a mass produced Chinese sharpener from Walmart.
      I completely understand your concern about material loss on an expensive pencil and have worked hard to find the best possible sharpening tools in the world. I still use an Xacto blade and sandpaper sometimes when I really want to apply care and avoid breakage. At the collision point of pencil quality and sharpener type is the key to finding the right mix.
