    Parents used to dress their little girls of that age like Shirley Temple in the 50s in the last century; I have a photograph of my wife when she was six, dressed like Shirley was .

    In the Second World War The Royal York in Toronto was where all the stars, selling war bonds, stayed. A Canadian women told a story that at about the age of 13 she and her friend would roam the halls of The Royal York looking for movie stars. They ran into Shirley Temple and one of her brothers, he was in the Royal Canadian Air Force, they asked for her autograph and while saying yes she stopped and said, "If you take a photograph of me and my brother in his unifrom?" She handed them the camera and the photo was taken. She give them her autograph then said, "Now give me your names and addresses and I'll send you a copy of the photograph." Good as her word they each received a copy of the photo with Shirley standing next to her brother, her arm through his. What a nice thing to do! The photo was in the newspaper along with the article I read. I guess the stars were different in those days because the lady went on to tell about she and her friend having tea with Ronald Coleman in his hotel room. They had located his room and knocked on the door. Having just ordered tea he asked if they wanted to join him. A different time a different era.

    I grew up watching bewitched, Brady bunch, I love lucy, dick van dyke show, n seen plenty of movies from these times. It was how I was raised. Honestly I’ve seen so much of the past I feel like I lived it n my soul reincarnated to a different body each time. I’m also a person who likes history, n I like to know how it was back then. Granted I’m a black person n it wasn’t the best for blks back then but since it’s modern day now I wish we can have a culture reset. I love a lot of eras in the 1900s (1920s to 1990s to be exact) I loved the Beegees, Beatles (a lot of rock music of the time, my moms music), Shirley was 1 of the many things in this century that I liked. My grandmother loved her so much she dressed her daughters like her. I being born late 90s experienced the great early 2000s n then culture sucked after Obama joined.

    I liked Shirley Temple immensely, but it was very apparent in 1940 she wasn't a 'child' anymore, but they (Hollywood) were trying desperately to hold onto that image, now fading, if not GONE FOREVER!!

    • @StevenTorrey
      @StevenTorrey ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think in 1940 she was still only 12 years old and still retains her "baby" singing voice. I have no idea what her singing voice sounded like as an adult. There is always talk that she was considered for the role of Dorothy in the 1939 Wizard of OZ--she wasn't--and she certainly did not have the vocal range that 16 year old Judy Garland had.

      Back then, 12 was still very much "girl" and girls dressed like girls at that age.
      Even in the 80s, girls at 11 and 12 still often dressed like girls and not mini adults.

    This is the NY city I prefer to remember. Where you could be as rich, beautiful or talented as you felt inside. I understand about that thing called time, though. Even Rome fell. Unfortunately, those invading and destroying 5th Ave today have nothing inside to carry them to happiness. Maybe if they learned to shuffle or even quick step?

    She was supposed be in the wizard of oz but couldn’t get out of the contract with fox but I always thought Judy garland was a little too old for the part because in the book Dorothy was around 8 or 9 and Judy was 16

      It's true and she was a big star BUT that role required an amazing singer and they went with the older but vocally mature teenage Judy. Being brought up in the Hollywood studio era, Judy had enough training as a dancer to perform the relatively "easy" dancing required in the film. I LOVE Shirley but Judy was mesmerizing in that film and conveyed the innocence/naïveté perfectly. Shirley could have easily done that, but the singing would've not been of the same caliber.
