Battling for Bangladesh: A Case for US Alliance

  • The question of whether Bangladesh should align with the US or China is a contentious issue, but the current regime's reported plans to rig upcoming elections take the nation down a perilous path. Siding with the US would lead to a partnership based on principles beneficial to the ordinary people of the country, not just the select few. Bangladesh needs partners who prioritise democratic values and the rule of law over mega projects. The US has largely been on the side of the ordinary people of Bangladesh throughout history and is serious about the democratic process in the country. The diaspora community of Bangladesh has a crucial role to play in promoting democracy in their home country and preventing it from turning into a North Korean state.

    Note: This video serves as an indispensable resource for shedding light on the intricate landscape of Bangladesh's politics. It accentuates the pressing need for Bangladeshi citizens to delve into the nuances of foreign policies, perhaps even surpassing the urgency of our daily sustenance. The intricate calculations and potential outcomes outlined here underscore the paramount importance of making informed decisions. Simultaneously, it offers a stark warning about the adverse consequences that can result from a failure to seize the right opportunities at the right junctures. A thought-provoking and enlightening exploration indeed!

      Assalamualaikum, I wholeheartedly agree with every point the speaker has made. However, I am deeply concerned about what alternatives we currently have in Bangladesh. Are the other major political parties prepared to govern the country? We, as Bangladeshis, are unfortunate in not having a robust opposition political party and/or apt, honest and able electoral candidates to rely on.
      I would highly value gaining the speaker's perspective on this. Thank you.

    It's a great analysis, brother. Democracy is the only solution to save us from this monstrous government and the US is our only ally in this fight. Our legal system, financial system, and education are on the brink of extinction. If we don't act now, it will be too late for us. Other countries, except the US, don't seem to care about the common people of Bangladesh.

    Spot on analysis at 14:10, Faham Bhai. ""I know that we regard the US particularly in light of imperial/expansionist tendencies. This is because our intelligensia back in the 60's, 70's and 80's were heavily influenced and funded by Russian and Communist ideologies. I can't remember how many times I've heard that the US wants our island St. Martin to build a military base. Obviously, this is non-sense. But this nonsensical rumor was widespread and still is... Your analysis is based on a worldview that was alive in 2001. United States is not the same global superpower. Secondly United States is too far away. They have military intentions in the region. You will simply become a proxy of the that states. Just like Ukraine, Georgia, Kurdish separatists and other stooges. China on the other hand is a neighbour. Is the largest economy in PPP terms, they are our largest military supplier. It is a no brainier to side with China. Plus, to balance against Indian regional hegemony, who do you think will truly help you? United States that is focussed on China and allied with India? Or China who is already in border disputes with India? I also live in the west myself but I have not sold my soul, religion and heritage like you have.

    Yes, we need to side with USA.
    While the USA and Bangladesh may seem worlds apart in terms of their positions on Education, Technology, and various aspects, I firmly believe that Bangladesh once held, and potentially still holds, the potential to become the "USA of Asia." However, achieving this status will require concerted efforts and a significant dedication to progress. The revival of democracy is an essential step towards realizing this goal. Actually, this is a must. We must get back freedom of speech and thought, conscience, and our blood-earned democracy.

    • @dewanh40

      I totally agree with you as long as Bangladesh can maintain the huge uneducated population, keep universities from educating students by the name of student politics. Bangladesh will keep supplying low wage labor like middle east supplies cheap oil. There are lots of similarities between Bangladesh and Middle East, both own and ruled by specific family, Middle East is able to export cheap oil, naturally obtained, no processing needed on the other hand Bangladesh can supply enormous amount cheap labor, naturally produced, no need to make them skilled, free. Bangladeshi human being need no maintenance. If a lot of them dies, no one cares, like middle eastern crude oil.

    • @msid7748
      @msid7748 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dewanh40 That's a feature, not a bug. BD's biggest resource and export is unskilled labor (garments industry and foreign workers in Middle East). Easier to keep the population in control and make money by exploiting their labor.
      If you educate the population, you might face a brain drain issue, especially in IT and tech. Since BD doesn't have the industrial capabilities for high tech stuff like semiconductor production.

    • @dewanh40
      @dewanh40 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BD doesn't have high tech industries for high tech educated students that's true but BD does have high paid other positions that doesn't have enough skilled people educated in BD to fill so BD industries imports a huge number of Indians and other foreign nationals to fill draining billions of $ to keep it's various sectors alive. Politicians keep BD education system low standard by keeping student politics in the educational institutions while they educate their own children overseas. Low standard education ensures supply of unskilled cheap labor good for BD garment industries to be competitive worldwide. BD garment industries has only one advantage and that is it can offer cheap labor.

    I respect you Sir but the sad truth is, Bangladesh cannot afford to loose its governing power to a party that is guided by revenge and doesn't understand Banhladeshi Politics.
    The South Indian Continent as a whole along with most parts of Asia is moving away from US and Europe. If everything falls into place, the next decades could be the Era of the Great Asia. But only those who have the grit can make it.
    And for Bangladesh, It can't be said that the normal people aren't suffering. But that is the price of not having the backbone to stand up against the market and demand their rights. Honestly, US or the other party in Bangladesh will never be able to provide the proper rights to Bangladeshis as neither truly care about that, it is all an illusion for gaining power. At this moment, not even the other party is able to say that they can handle the situation of Bangladesh without first serving their own needs. If government is changed, more bloodshed awaits.

    This presentation has seen a remarkable enhancement with well-articulated points. I wholeheartedly concur with the majority of the arguments and the accompanying explanations. I'd like to introduce a concept: the ideal mindset for an ordinary Bangladeshi should be one of self-reliance. It's crucial to emphasize that no one, and I emphasize, no one, holds admiration for individuals with a dependent personality. This principle extends to our nation on a grand scale. We may experience setbacks before experiencing progress, but it's essential not to be alarmed by every stumble on our path towards becoming an efficient and self-sufficient country. Additionally, we should adopt a mindset that allows us to learn from both nations, drawing upon the ingenuity of one and the industriousness of the other. This reminds me of the poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling, which beautifully encapsulates these principles. Again, thank you for your discussion of a complex topic in an understandable manner. Would love to hear more from you.

    This was an imposterous claim to say the US is only putting pressure on the ruling party for the welfare of general people. They have always interfered where has been a influence of socialist powers, vis-à-vis CHINA. US/EU has declared themselves police of the world but they themselves have committed war crimes and non-democratic deeds (Middle East & Africa). I’m not condemning the fact that US has been striving for democracy in Bangladesh. But calling it selfless and only for the general people shows either hidden bias or ignorance of basic geo-politics.

    Your significant and truthful analysis will shade up lights to those spineless people who often ignorant about Bangladesh politics.

    Neither democracy nor emotional factors are involved in maintaining foreign policy for the country's best interests.
    Given the likelihood of a multipolar world in the future, it is imperative that we balance our foreign policy to secure the best future for our country.

    Well argued, especially the inappropriateness of Westminster-type democracy in Bangladesh. I definitely side with the US in particular and the West in general. But democracy, for now, is not what we need. If a change happens, which we are eagerly awaiting, the first thing would be to get tied with the West ensuring their support as was given to Taiwan and South Korea. Governance has to be improved by any means, even by a benevolent dictator. Meanwhile, parties must be democratised before we aim to democratize the country. Ten years of good governance will drastically change the country; it is no magic-it has been proven in many countries.
