8 Reasons Why I DON'T "eat fresh" @Subway

  • Warning, this description is going to be a bit dark, I deliberately left out this last reason as it's not entertaining, it's just sad. When I moved to Calgary in 1998, most of the local Subways were open until 11 or 12 at night, and for the last 3 or 4 hours of your shift you were a lone closer. This was well known to local thieves as they would target them for robbery, and in many cases murder. It was so regular in fact, that the local government had to step in and force businesses to add a second person to closer shifts for security. At the begging of 98' the minimum wage was $5.00 and over the next two years, it would be increased to $5.90, not a lot of money to lose your life over. Businesses at that time were still cash heavy, so for thieves this was really profitable, you could get a weeks wages just for one robbery. In 99/00 I actually had a girlfriend that worked at the Marda Loop Subway, this has nothing to do with this story, just that I do have some insider knowledge.

20+ years ago, Subway came into my city and started offering 2 things that Mr. Sub didn't - a choice of sauces (but we still ordered the same) and their "V" cut buns - so our subs looked loaded and we had a choice of of sauce - everyone went wild for it, much to the determent of Mr Sub. which was superior in quality, quantity and taste. But unfortunately NOT in marketing.

The "V" was iconic, until they introduced a half dozen choices of bread, now if you include wraps, Flatbread and bowls, I'm confused... what were we talking about?
