“You’re playing a cat.” Honestly that’s gotta be one of the best ways to describe the beast like races. Lizardfolk, you’re playing a lizard, Yuan-ti you’re playing a snake, Kenku you’re playing a raven, Aacroka you’re playing a bird.
Raven got more creativity than a Kenku, I'm afraid.
Also you just differentiated birds and ravens...
Ehhhhhhh, I don't know. I think the beast races' adherence to their animal inspiration varies. For instance, Gnolls are (usually) stupid murderers whose only social structure is "big man on top", but real life hyenas are A) matriarchal, B) Have an incredibly nuanced social structure complete with their own fucking NAMES (I mean, they're just like yips and barks, but each hyena has a unique combination that they and their pack use to refer to that specific Hyena. How cool is that?), C) Are intelligent enough to have a means of communication that borders on an actual (if very simple) language, and D) Are only aggressive sometimes because, you know, they need to eat.
Kenku's intelligence is mostly just mimicry, but Ravens (and corvids in general) are actually VERY intelligent and creative. Though they can also mimic things. Yuan-Ti are WAAAAY more active than snakes. Depending on the lizard in question, a Lizardfolk might be LESS emotional than a real-life lizard. I've seen people play with big monitor lizards like dogs. They fucking play fetch with their 6ft lizard.
But yes, Tabaxi are pretty much just cats. Except they don't try to murder you on a whim because you brushed your hand against them.

Strictly speaking, Tabaxi are jaguar or leopard folk. And the Cat Lord is mentioned relatively often in Planescape material and other old books. But, who ever bothers with all of that anymore. Kitty people #1 (out of like a dozen)!

I'm currently playing a Tabaxi Beastmaster Ranger. He has no fur. Yes, he is Bingus. And his animal companion is Big Floppa.
Bingus actually does still have eyebrows, but he never emotes, and he has the voice of a Khajiit that's been chainsmoking since birth.

They are. Technically they're "felinoids" and not actually part of the cat family, but they're more cat than dog.

What I like about taxis is that they’re fast, and therefore good transportation.
They really took the wisdom of that hedgehog to heart.
It turns out hyenas aren't felines or canines they have their own family with similarities to both called Hyaenidae... The more you know!

Cat Lord had a stat block in ADND. Monster Manual 2 maybe? There wasn't much lore, but he appeared as just a fancy man who summoned and controlled cats at will. I was always so curious about where he came from!
That Log Horizon reference, though... I laughed way too hard at that.
As I've stated, the BEST show - an army of degenerate nerds being bullied into competent leaders
I just finished up a mini campaign with my tabaxi scout rogue. They have a hermit background and are known to work as a contractor for candlekeep (it’s a mutually beneficial arrangement) and go out and research flora, fauna, and ancient ruins/caverns (they know dwarven and undercommon from all their research). This arrangement is beneficial to them because they grew up in a caravan family with many children. As my tabaxi is a bit quieter and more reclusive, far more of an introverted personality, they often took off for their own “mini adventures” as a kid and self taught themselves the basics of being a scout. They did gain a mentor who is their sponsor for candlekeep and was given bracers of archery and a bag of holding from them to take on their journeys as an adult. When my character became an adult they left their caravan family behind, promising to send letters and journals filled with notes and drawings from their adventures back to keep their family informed, reassured, and amused by their antics. This is how their story starts. I gave my character a deep curiosity of the natural world and the past and they like to collect things. They don’t really steal, not really at least, though they obviously pick up stuff during a dungeon crawl. Most times they sell back the historical and magical items they don’t keep for themselves to candlekeep. Though valuables aren’t all they collect. My tabaxi is somewhat practical and also has a slight obsession with being over prepared. Their bag of holding is filled with tons of mundane items from shovels to spyglasses to pretty leaves. They will of course trade easily and if you gift them an item of practical value they will give you something in return (I did this with a silvered +1 returning dagger and gave the player a healing potion, my character can make them, and a poleof collapsing). They just keep tons of stuff on themselves at all times, even extra signal whistles and tents, and cold weather clothes. Heck, they have a costume even and soap (who buys soap? Or keeps empty vials for that matter? Or a whetstone?). My party members and the dm loved how my character turned out as he was everything practical but everything comedic too, especially when I would have him say “Wait, I think I got something for this” and dig so far into his bag of holding you could only see his lower body and swishing tail and occasionally a random item would be thrown out as he digs. It all came in handy eventually though he definitely lost some items along the way, mostly his ball bearings and some unlit candles he was using to mark the path. He plans to pick up some incense sometime soon as, now in the epilogue he is going to travel with the wizard to candlekeep (they realized they were headed the same direction). It’s been fun to play this character. Had no magic but it was amazing and powerful nevertheless and he served his party well with his many abilities. I really enjoyed playing him and hope to bring him back from retirement sometime.
Oh and I should probably mention this. Part of why my dm loved this character is that he loved how creatively my character would use mundane items. He said they are under used and he hadn’t thought to use them the ways I would or would have my character use them and he would talk to his main dnd group (we were playtesting a dungeon in preparation for the main group) about some of the antics I got up to so they too might consider spending their excessive coin on such things and have fun with it. I genuinely was just doing this to test myself on how much trouble I could get into and how much I could break with as little magic as I could gat away with.
I just started a campaign and one of my players is a tabaxi, so this does help me understand a bit more about tabaxi, even though they really just act like cats. Go figure

Tabaxi: the only people who play them are people who want a character that can climb on walls, and furries (who will most likely say they are the other type)

I literally want to play one to basically just copy something from skyrim, the khajiit merchants that hang out outside cities and sell you stuff.
It’s funny that I’d never play a character like that for fear for the assumption lol there’s kind of a race like that in WoW and I’ll refuse to ever pick it for that reason lol xD
@@Raumes513 Indeed, and tabaxi are probably one of the best races if you want to play a rouge, monk, or maybe even bard, here is what they get:
+2 dex, +1 cha, darkvision, the ability to double your speed once per turn but if you use it you have to move 0 feet before you can use it again, climbing speed of 20 feet, claws that deal 1d4 unarmed damage, auto proficiency with perception and stealth, and finally the ability to speak common and one other language of your choice.
Naw, I play one right now because I really connect with the love of stories for RP purposes. Also, I find animal heads far easier to draw than humanoid ones if I want to make character art. Same reason I played a minotaur in a previous game.

There are more reasons why someone would play as a Lizardfolk, a Minotaur, a Dragonborn, an Aracockra or Kenku, or any other race based on an animal
They could like the asthetic
They could want to feel like something that's not human or Elven or anything like that
They could like the lore around the race
Playing an animal race in D&D doesn't and shouldn't automatically make people assume your a fuckin Furry

On Amazon you can get plastic sets for about $20 if I remember correctly. Stone and metal sets are going to be a lot more expensive though (I lucked out with an amethyst set for about $50), but you could get some very beautiful sets if you're lucky.

I have a tabaxi named Kuro and he’s one of my favorites
His fixation is people, meaning humanoid races and cultures. He’ll jump from one to another depending on where he is, and it makes him so fun to play.
He’s a monk/moon druid and he fights using his claws and martial arts, and also uses wild shape to become like a bear and shit. By far one of my favorites

Hyenas are neither canine or feline. They’ve got a family all their own called “Hyaenidae”.

I made a tabaxi bard who was a saber tooth tiger (I know their leopards but come on it’s fantasy) who has to become the college of blades after he got kicked out of a formal bard college since his large fangs disabled him from playing the flute, so he took it to string instruments, namely a guitar with two obsidian axe heads he sharpens with his fangs on the sides

I chose Tabaxi because I can relate to them. He’s easily distracted and lazy. My character is enchanted by shiny objects even if they aren’t worth anything, they just need to be shiny. He’s also a charlatan who likes to convince people that the random junk he’s selling is actually worth something. He has gold but doesn’t really know it’s true value, to him they are just shiny pieces.

The Cat Lord also appeared in Planescape (Monstrous Compendium I), where she (actually a cat lady) was one of the animal lords of the Beastlands. She was a "quasigod", who could shift between human and panther forms, and she was busy helping the cats and other felines throughout the multiverse. Also, an animal lord may die, and then another spirit takes its place. So we may have different Cat Lords throughout D&D editions.

I've got a Tabaxi Bard in my character backlog that I'd like to play. I want him obsessed with filling out his own life's story with adventures to outshine all others. He'll occasionally excuse himself to go cough up a hairball, which he considers to be a most distasteful act to do in front of others. It refers to any traveller culture, which whilst is often ethnic it frequently also isn't so it's up for debate whether it's a racial slur or not. Typically the connotations are a propensity for violence, theft and tax avoidance. Originally the term never had these connotations but they drifted into it over time making it a slur. In a way you could view it more like calling someone a non-ethnic slur: like calling someone a druggie because they smoke weed is inaccurate and offensive but not racial. It's also supported by stats that those who smoke weed are more likely to become drug addicts but it's still a generalisation.
Obviously it is somewhat partially racial though and worse than the example I gave but there are good reasons why it can be considered far less bad than other racial slurs and that the context he used it in is alright. Personally I'm on the fence with whether that was okay or not but I respect both sides.

In my homebrew campaign, The Cat Lord in his human form basically looks like Thriller video Michael Jackson, with messy black hair, a red and black gambeson, yellow cat eyes, and he is draped in lots of shiny jewelry. His domains are luck, freedom, and shiny things. He gave the players an item called The Wand of Anxiety, a smooth, palm-sized silver rod with a single button on it. You can use a bonus action to push the button and point it at an enemy, a red dot appears on them, being very distracting. They have disadvantage on all concentration checks for 1 minute. The Wand can be used this way 3 times per day and regains any spent charges at dawn.
