This entire soundtrack is a JOY to listen to, but this track is one of the very best. Old ballad sung acappella to perfection. Thank you SO much for posting. I had completely forgotten about it, though I have the CD around here somewhere . Sometimes ya gotta let TH-cam do it's magic soup and dig out what's good for ya. Thank you.
The way my friend and I almost sang this for our 6th grade talent show... A song about a girl murdering her sister and then said sister's body being turned into a fiddle. 😂
MY SISTER IS FAIR AND I AM DARKER, LIKE INT HE SONG. I CRIED AND CRIED THE FIST TIME I HEARD THIS SONG! BONE CHILLING! VERY SIMILAR TO THE LOUVIN BROTHERS - "KNOXVILLE GIRL" AND THE CARTER FAMILY WITH JOHNNY CASH - "THE BANKS OF THE OHIO". ALSO LISTEN TO ESTHER STEPHENS AND "BANKS OF THE OHIO."
I have been a fan of this movie since it first came out. This is my favorite song on the soundtrack - so haunting. I had the cd but lost it and forgot this is where the song was from since you don't hear much of it in the movie. Glad I found it again. Love Gillian and David's version.
I'm a bit late in responding to your comment, but wanted you to know that I appreciated it very much. I've been ill for quite a long time and am just now getting better. I loved the movie and the soundtrack. So glad you found The Wind and Rain here and enjoyed it. My best, Moppet
Well that was weird. I know this song very well, I know at least seven or eight versions of, but I've never heard it start with two girls from County Clare. Which seems a shame, seeing as I am FROM County Clare. I like it.
Yes I noticed the same thing with this version. I am from California but my great-grandparents came from county cork, And as a musician I pay attention to many types of music including folk from all parts of the world. One of my old bands would cover this song as well as Mattie grows which has many versions itself. It's just the sort of thing that happens when songs are passed down through centuries. Take care cousin.
That IS a shame. It showed how the mountains kept the music in it's true, purer state due to the isolation of the people. It's one of my favorite movies. You are welcome & stop by anytime. I posted a second cd they put out with the original old time singers a year or so later. You might catch a few of those songs also. Thanks so much, Moppet
You are very welcome. I play this cd just about daily...and often many times daily. I love it! Thank you for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed this. I appreciate it very much. I'm sorry to take so long to answer, but I have been having major computer and health problems...at the same time. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)
+crystalchell143 so glad you found this here. I haven't heard the "Her Story" version. Many don't like the story, but it is so old...100's of years old. This is exactly what you say, a Traditional Song. My best to you, Moppet
+Reader Minion Music is to be enjoyed...I like many versions. I "collect" versions of many songs. You didn't seem to be mad...I thought your comment was fine. Music is subjective. We can't all like the same things. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week, Moppet
Todd A It's one of my favorites also. I saw the Dead back in 68 when no one in my area had heard of them. I was lucky enough to be entering a venue when Grisman was entering. They had an idiot at the gate & she wasn't letting him in. I jumped in & showed her my program, stating "HE IS THE MAIN ACT TONIGHT!" I'm sure he thought I was a total fool...but I'm a total fan. Thanks for the input, but I've been a fan forever of both. (I do like The Songcatcher music though). Nice to meet you, Moppet
Stumbled across this song by Peggy Seeger and at first listen I knew it was going to be a favorite, it is and I play it almost every day. Can't decide which is the better version, Peggy or Gillian? Both are so good. Maybe Emmylou has a version ... that should settle if!
thank you, wonderful version...the song popped into my head just now and I had to find it...or the words sung '...oh the dreadful wind and rain...' as it is rainy and windy here....and I was thinking that i do not like this wind...
I love variations on the murder ballad "The Twa Sisters." Others include "The Two Sisters" by Clannad (Sing aye dumb, sing aye day/The boys were born for me) and "The Bonny Swans" (A hey ho bonny o/The swans swim so bonny o) by Loreena McKennitt and another common title is "Binnorie" (Binnorie, Binnorie, by the bonny mill dams of Binnorie) and "The Cruel Sister" (Lay the bent to the bonnie broom/Fa la la la la la la la la la.) And yes, "murder ballad" is an actual genre of traditional music.
And all those crazy English Scots Irish came to the Appalachians and brought these murder ballads with them. Many songs done in bluegrass are almost word for word from their cousins overseas; Pretty Polly, Knoxville Girl, Barbara Allen. Somebody's always getting a sword run through them or thrown in a river:)
Jewel Reynolds I'm glad you got here. I'm so out of it that I don't know what that is. Is it a computer radio station? Do they play stuff & when you like it you look it up on utube? There have been some places ppl mention...Thanks for letting me know & especially for listening.
+MyMoppet52 Hi! Geek Remix is actually a youtube channel run by two women who record videos of them playing videos and discussing them. They played a game called "Her Story" that included a cover of this song. I'm glad they did -- that's where I heard it for the first time as well, and I've listened to so many versions now!
+Lauren Kelly thx for your info. If you haven't listened to Grisman and Garcia's version, it's really good. It might not be what you are looking for, but it's very famous. My besat to you, Moppet
Best version ever: Crooked Still, look it up. They leave out certain verses and it has the effect of making the story more mysterious, and the instrumental accompaniment really suits the melody perfectly. Plus: it is sung by Aoife O'Donovan and she has this silky voice which makes it all even more chilling..
None less that Jerry Garcia and David Grisman recorded this as well. I've listened to this recording hundreds of times, and it's just now occurring to me that there are 3 voices in there. David Steele is the 3rd voice according to wiki
Here's a really interesting post about the origins of this song. (I really love this version of the song, and the post happened to link to it.) www.atlasobscura.com/articles/how-2-sisters-and-1-murder-inspired-500-songs
@TheCaraandfriends Well, it's about jealousy, murder, and getting caught...and it was a sister that murdered her sis. This is a song that has many differernt versions (even Grateful Dead) starting back 100's of years ago in Europe. I have another version, w/another name on my site. I'll see if I can get it. Sometimes it is one bone or the other that makes the music that tells everyone about the murder. Please don't watch TH-cam March 6,7, & 8. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you for letting me know you enjoyed this song. I appreciate it. It's taken me a while to get back to you, but my computer broke down (it was new) and I didn't get it back for a long time. I do love this song. I enjoy the entire album. My best to you, Moppet
It's a version of the same song. The music changed a bit when it arrived in this country, but it's from the same song. Thanks for adding your comment, Moppet
Amazing. I love Irish, English Folk and the old-time music. I haven't really expanded to other folks but I am grateful for the genres and the musicians (old and new) who keep them alive.
I agree. She does a great job of finding music which suits her. I was lucky enough to see her and David last summer...boy it was hot...and she even let loose with a few jokes and clogged a bit. She is a wonderful musician and singer. Thanks for commenting. My best to you, Moppet
+Haley Elizabeth Sorry for that. Many very old ballads have sad stories. It appears to be the nature of the songs from that time. Here is The Demon Lover, also known as The House Carpenter. It has a bit of magical influence in it also. Like the bone that kept telling everyone in this song. th-cam.com/video/p5i9awBvtd0/w-d-xo.html
Mike Kirley thanks for your comment. It is an old song & does have other names. I'm gonna use your comment to try to reach someone else. Hope you don't mind. There is NO place for me to reply to them...Thanks for listening, Moppet +daisukereds Please see the comment about Two Sisters. I don't know the game or the version of the song. I do hope you find what you are looking for. My best, Moppet
+SassyMintyPanda Many old songs have a demon or magical image used. In this the fiddler made a fiddle out of her bones, but it magically told everyone of the murder - The Dreadful Wind and Rain. It told all of her murder. If you wish, comment back & I can send you old songs with magical mentions in them.
You might be a bit compulsive, but I'm a bit late. Thanks for your comment & I will change wording. I appreciate any help I can get. I've been ill for quite a long time & am very behind in responding to my comments. I do appreciate you taking time to help out.If you enjoy this type music, type in The Songcatcher, mountain music (Songcatcher ?), Appalachian music, traditional music, Americana music, roots music-to see what I have. Also, artists names. Top rt on my Channel."Search Channel" area.
@TourettesKitteh That is just too, too funny! I love it. (I actually made a cd of music to relax to & help me sleep. This was on it!) I know all the verses & would be so disappointed if someone didn't hear them all...hmm...... Thanks so much for commenting. I saw your other comment, also. The comments are much appreciated! My best to you,Barbara p.s. If you like male vocals of this type try Tim O'Brien from Songs of the Mtn., The Blackest Crow esp. Also his Farewell Angelina.:)
+Mariam Randomness It IS dark. You are not being mean. Many of the very old songs are about murder, sibling jealousy, and also a bit of magical influences. This originated in The Child Ballads, so it is a very old ballad. I'm sending a link. You don't have to listen. I've known it as The House Carpenter, but it's called The Demon Lover. It is very old also. It is about a woman who married someone after her true love left. Then her true love came back... If you listen, I hope you enjoy. It is dark also. Down in the Willow Gardens is another song like this. There is a murder done by a few ways, on ONE person. The Demon Lover/The House Carpenter th-cam.com/video/p5i9awBvtd0/w-d-xo.html
These dark ballads are such a treasure to be preserved.
Today, this story might be recorded differently - as an episode of “Snapped.”
I just love how they harmonize. It sends chills down my spine.
The two have made so much great music together. I'm grateful.
Haunting, beautiful and always bring a tear to my eyes.

One of my favorite songs from that excellent soundtrack!
One of my favorite versions of one of my favorite songs.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE! THIS SONG. THE LYRICS ARE CHILLING!

please view/listen to Gillian's music.....she's a national treasure, keeping traditional music alive
Amen!
There's a musical/song-cycle called "Ghost Quartet" which has a very interesting take on this story. This is a wonderful rendition btw
OH IM HERE FROM GHOST QUARTET HI
Artistic and acoustic time space continuums' relativity's yes
@@jaycetaylor8349 we all are us the point of Genesis because writing was a genius gift only some could afford to sit and learn.
This song is so metal
Murder ballads are the original metal
And it’s sooooooo ancient. Originally, coming from Ireland. Taken to Appalachia to be sung up in the hollers. Beautiful!
This is my favorite version of Wind and Rain - her voice is beautiful and haunting
+Deanna D Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a gorgeous song!
Yes it is! I love it too!
heard it a thousand times, and will for a thousand more......and then again....
tnx mymoppet52 for sharing all the music.....

I remember singing this in music class in grade 4 or 5 and I had nightmares about it for weeks after. (Doesn't stop me from liking it)
omg here I am one year later...b/c of the weather this popped into my head...and I had forgotten coming here

I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG
Can't get better than this!
Ah, a classic traditional song. Truly the best version of this song is a cappella. Personally, I prefer this version over the "Her Story" version. :)
+crystalchell143 so glad you found this here. I haven't heard the "Her Story" version. Many don't like the story, but it is so old...100's of years old. This is exactly what you say, a Traditional Song. My best to you, Moppet
thank you I hated the her story version
+Reader Minion I just like old ballads. So glad you enjoyed this.
MyMoppet52 sorry for the way I phrased it I was probably made but yes I agree I like old ballads so I prefer this version

listen to "dreadful wind and rain"
performed by jerry Garcia and David Grisham.
one of my favorite versions of this folk classic.

My favorite The Cruel Sister by Old Blind Dog.
I grew up listening to Clannad, but hadn't heard the others. I will definitely look them up.
Welch and Rawlings make me weep
"Her story"
Pierre Dufrenne thanks for listening, Moppet
me too. I got here from Geek Remix playing it.

HerStorry brought me here.. I hope there is a "better" version of this song, like the one in the game. I'll keep searching, God knows I'm into it.
+DaiReds there is a version by David Grisman and Jerry Garcia. It's one of the most famous. Good luck.
fight me in the parking lot
Haven't heard the one in that game, but check out the version by Crooked Still - Wind and Rain.
the ghost quartet version bops
I think this version is beautiful. But the Grisman and Garcia take is fine.

My guy fell asleep next to me last night as I sang this.
Tragic love story. Reminds me of the cruel sister by the pentangle

Great song! Humanity at its best! LOL! The SONG is awesome as is the singing! AMAZING!
Love this!
Och aye! A Scottish song.
So much better than the original.
A very very pretty song
the only tune that the Weather Channel will play...
magic 👹🤘

@daisukereds if you find a version that resembles the one in the game please share :D
Sarbus
I hope some one does find the version. I'd like to hear it also. Good luck to you both, Moppet
Who is the third voice on this track?
David Steele is credited on the Songcatcher cd for this track
I dont get the fiddle part can someone explain this whole thing to me
The man who found her bones was a fiddler and he whittled her long finger bone into a fiddle peg.
+Paul Doe Thanks for helping out. It's appreciated, Moppet
+SassyMintyPanda Many old songs have a demon or magical image used. In this the fiddler made a fiddle out of her bones, but it magically told everyone of the murder - The Dreadful Wind and Rain. A Steam Summer sale brought me to 'Her Story', I was blown away by the song...which brought me here. I think the lady in 'Her Story" did it better.
I know this is on the Songcatcher cd, but is it also in the movie? Where? Thanks. I really like it, play it on bowed psaltery.
So this from a gameplay of Her Story, its haunting in Her Story, but this version is muuuuch better. the vocals are so on point. Is this the original?
@TourettesKitteh That is just too, too funny! I love it. (I actually made a cd of music to relax to & help me sleep. This was on it!) I know all the verses & would be so disappointed if someone didn't hear them all...hmm......

Is this a version of the Cruel Sister?
This tells a story similar to The Two Sisters by Clannad.
Her Story - brought me here
is anyone else here from her story?
Who is here because of the Game „Her Story“?
My penpal brought me here
