the problem is like people who play pauper aren't even winning either. it's this middle ground decision that appeals to no one that is the real problem. thing is mtg could make different levels of products. literally make the cards in anything but collector boosters of a lesser card stock quality, with only modern frames. make the collector cards all have better card stock quality, special treatments, nfc chips, etc. print one run of collectors and print to demand the others qualities. this change should come with a decrease in cost to everything but collector sets and and increase in price to those. minimum change in cost should be 50%, but i think better would be to hit 35$ for a set booster box and 500$ for collector booster box. (also for fun i guess each collector box should also include a redemption code that gives one of every card in the set in arena.)

@@gamemasters how does printing one form of the cards appeal to the 15 year old with 20$ of spending money, old sets never had the wide customer base they currently have, if they tried to release with same level of print run as they did now you they would get bought up and price gouged by secondary market and without such a limit on quanity they can never see similar value. which isn't good for the game and isn't good for hasbro. if there are 2 different (VERY DIFFERENT) products for the 2 different category of customer price gouging the lower level product won't happen because they are intended to go to dirt, and collectors won't care because they were never intended to hold value anyway.
i could be wrong, but i think the difference in scope of magic is too big for it. unless they are planing on /really/ pricing people out of mythics due to scarcity. like lower base price for boosters, but lower mythics to like one mythic per box, basically relegate all non-mythic cards to pauper and make each mythic 30+ on scarcity alone. this path feels worse to me tho.

Personal experience: went to local game store for MTG prerelease this past weekend. Prerelease tournaments were supposed to be held at 3-7-12 on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Despite this only the Saturday night planechase fired with 5 people in total. They were unable to get even 4 people together to fire any of the other prerelease event times even though there was a constant 30+ players in the store the entire time. People just couldn't be bothered to play prerelease and would rather play other formats like commander or were playing other card games instead. This can probably be contributed to the prerelease being changed by WOTC although the current state of magic seems very poor.

A note on the players switching to commander. This is very true in my area, there is very very small groups for 60 card deck formats. I know that all the long term players and collectors have been selling there playsets. Now they limit what they want to hold since they only need 1-2 for their commander decks. Now the stores that use to struggle to have select singles are now drowning them.
Also with them printing secret lairs so much, that even some players / collectors don't even keep the 1-2 for potential decks

they need to seperate the products more. card stock on noncollector cards needs to feel worse. there needs to be only standard card treatments on noncollector cards. and the prices between these categories needs widened. trying to strattle the saddle pisses off both bells on the curve.
