Putting the blue shell so low feels incredibly undeserved. It should be so much higher imo.
Not only is it fun to use, but it gives Mario the ability to defeat almost anything (Not sure which are excluded, but it's definitely more than the fire flower accomplishes considering that you can kill ghosts with this thing). Plus, it gives you extra control and speed when you are underwater, making it useful in almost every level of New Super Mario Bros DS.
I think the only enemies that aren’t instakilled by Blue Shell Mode are bosses.
I agree. It's pretty much a better Penguin Suit, which means it should be higher than that item lmao.

The blue shell is my favourite power-up! I loved going into the shell and enemies couldn’t kill me, things like goombas just bump into me and turn around! It was the best :)

Perhaps Yoshi is wearing Kuribo Shoes?
Lakitu Clouds don’t give you an extra hit like the Kuribo Shoe. It functions more as a platform.
I personally do count Yoshi as a power-up, but by the logic in the video here that he’s a separate character and thus not included.
Why are we calling the Goombas by their Japanese names? It's a Goomba's Shoe in English, Kuribo is the Japanese name

After so many years, you’re just not getting me to change the name of your fictional creatures. Same reason that Podoboo’s jump out of the lava and not lava bubbles.
Yoshi is a friend, not a powerup.
A ranking for Link's items or Samus' power ups could be cool.
I was wondering where’s Odyssey but then I realized Jirard would probably consider Cappy a character like Yoshi.
They're still both power-ups though so it is a bit weird.
In terms of Classic Power Ups I definitely lean towards the caped Feather and Tanooki suit. Idk I just liked how they both had the power of flight and attacking enemies. Also Mario with a cape looks cool so that’s a plus
Entertaining video, great seeing some Mario games and power ups I've missed out on. Video could do with longer pauses when adding each power up to the chart as I struggled to locate them before the video moved on, perhaps a little animation to see where the power up icon was placed?
Yeah, I liked the video, but the editing left a lot to be desired. The SMW footage with the blown out brightness was also hard to look at lmao

No for real though. A ranking list feels fresh compared to all the tier lists that are done nowadays. Loved the video!
Though I understand why tier lists are more popular. They allow you to fit everything in a range rather than have to defend your very specific choices based on every minute detail your viewers/critics will think up.
You're hating on tier lists because they're popular? It's a really convenient way to rank things and they're far more visually appealing
I hate this format, it is not easily understandable where it starts and where it ends, by the way my favourite ranking method is worst to best

The bread and butter of what makes Mario Platformers what they are.
My personal favourite power ups are the Cat Bell, Cloud Flower, Rock Mushroom, Penguin Suit, Boo Mushroom & Tanooki Leaf

I like the spring mushroom! I like that it requires more finesse and timing for jumps. And it’s used for one of the best stars in the game, beating Mecha Bowser.
Gotta be honest, regrowing the beard every time he does the intro takes dedication. Kudos to you for going the extra mile.
He uses a Follicle Flower for it actually, and he doesn’t have to shave because it lasts until he takes damage or shoots a certain amount of hair balls.
did the red star from galaxy not match the criteria somehow? sure it's super situational but it does give mario a neat outfit and flight
You can't actually use it in game (I think) other than 1 star, and at that a bonus star, so it'd probably go with the other 1 off items
@@pacattack2586 You can also use it in the Observatory after completing that star. But yeah would definitely be lower down just due to its underutilisation

Figuring out that I could turn into stone with the full Tanuki suit as a kid blew my mind. Helped with those pesky lava balls in Bowser's castle
I'm pretty sure the Tanuki statue is the only way to kill those, so yeah, definitely good to bring into those areas.
Wish I had figured that out, haha! I remember turning to stone, wondering what the heck for, and then moving on. XD
I would've added cappy and made him #1, but I understand that he's a creature like yoshi. So I'd love to see you rank all of the cappy powers sometime!
To me, the Goomba Shoe isn't necessarily a power-up, nor merely an "item". It's a vehicle. Kinda like how Yoshi is a mount, and not an item/powerup.
I personally consider Yoshi a power-up as well; but understand the argument that as a separate character Yoshi is not.
I have a harder time understanding splitting the two.
I actually really like the mini mushroom, running and jumping with it is really fun and I like fighting the two bosses with it

He forgot the red star in Galaxy. Which fair enough I think most people forgot it exists which is a shame because its my favorite powerup in Galaxy. and could be my favorite flying powerup in general if you used it in more then 1 level and the Hub.
I agreed with almost all your reasonings, but was shocked by how you then ranked. Definitely could have been titled "I show which power ups I'm most nostalgic for". Fun vid either way
Though I disagree with a few of the rankings, this video was a lot of fun and I can appreciate the logic throughout.

You forgot the greatest "power-up" of them all: The Warp Whistle. An item so powerful that it allows Mario & Luigi to _skip entire worlds._

The concept of a dynamic ranking while going through the games in chronological order was great!
Yoshi is a power up and it's the best power up. Yoshi gives Mario one extra hit, gives him double jump, can shoot projectiles, spit fire, stomp, fly, swallow enemies from far away, etc.
I guess you can consider that Cappy is a power up too.

And that rumor persists. The US Mario 2 isn't just a Doki Doki Panic reskin. It started as a Mario game that was reskinned into Doki Doki Panic, then reskinned *back* into a Mario game.
So it started as a Mario game, NOT Doki Doki Panic. Seriously, it should be common knowledge at this point, but literally EVERY gaming channel perpetuates the 'they just reskinned Doki Doki Panic for Mario 2!' myth.
The mushroom is the most iconic power in the Mario series and is arguably the most useful and the most useless depending on the situation.

Fun fact you can get the P-Wing in Super Mario 3D Land. It warps Mario straight to the end of a level.

A very fun video, that doubles as a check list of Mario games that I've played and games that I haven't (mainly the 3D land quad) so thanks for the reminder!
One pretty obvious continuation of this series might be "The Legend of Zelda dungeon weapons/tools ranked" BUT for sanity sake, I personally would make a distintion between the top-down / 2D scroll Zeldas and the 3D Zeldas, because the dungeons tools need to fullfil too different mechanical needs. Nevertheless, I think that is a heck of a list to make!

Ps: 10:05 the vanishing cap does not make Mario opaque but translucent because we can almost see him still, so he does not became transparent like glass, even if it makes more sense gameplay wise.

Fun video. Only suggestion is maybe add an arrow or show an animation of them going from the top to being dragged to their placement in the list as where your placing some of the items gets hard to find quickly without pausing in the second half when your just throwing them on the list as opposed to saying what they are better or worse than for visual clarity.
I enjoy the different way you ranked these Jirard. You coulda gone with a standard tier list, or a best to worst list, but you did it in a more interesting way. Right on.
Super Mario Land series power-ups are always forgotten, so nice to see them shown!

I really enjoyed this video, I thought the commentary was fun and classic completionist. I would love to see more videos like this in the future however with the grid as more items were added I found it harder and harder to know where the items were being ranked. In the future having a little animation or at least a number based grid would be easier for me to know where the items were going.

The Hammer Bro suit from SMB3 reminds me fondly of Castlevania and Castlevania-adjacent games, although my first encounter with the power-up was before any others, even the Megaman games. It has me reminiscing fondly of Shovel Knight as well, with the nostalgia bouncing back and forth.

Super Mario Land 2 is one of my most played Mario games. When i first got it i was immediately captivated by the creativity put into such a tiny cartridge. I didn't own a Super Nintendo and I had only gotten to play Super Mario Bros. 3 at friend's houses, so Six Golden Coins was My upgraded Mario title beyond the first Mario Bros. and Mario Land 1.

how the NSMB Wii ice flower didn't land above the standard fire flower considering it also allows you to create blocks to jump off is beyond me but super fun video for sure!!

I understand your concern with the mini mushroom, but... you know what I see it as? A HARD MODE WITH FUN GIMMICKS!
Also you forgot to mention the running on water thing, but thats situational but still cool. Why I love this power up is the same reason I did "Blue shell runs" like bandy tried. But I did MINI MUSHROOM RUNS! Essentially... mini mushroom makes it harder for you to get hit, makes jumps more secure but you die and it's over... but not only that.. YOU CANT DAMAGE ENEMIES! Still bounce on them but not DAMAGE unless you ground pound. Making it another fun addition.
And I think thats why I love the mini mushroom.... going through levels in a super hard mode, feeling different and a challange on top but with better control and a smaller hitbox. It doesnt deserve super high.. but not super low either.

I know Cappy is a character but I would put him as the top powerup because of what he allows you to do.
I love hearing Jirards opinions on rankings! Look forward to each top 10, and ranks are HUGE PLAYS. Disagree on the 🍒 personally a favorite, it’s so much fun getting as many as I can! Some ranked that’d be cool. Mario odyssey transforms, series (god of war, twisted metal, Kingdom hearts etc)
Blue Shell is my favourite power-up from a handheld. Blatant Invincibility and you can Swim faster? Sign me up. Propeller Mushroom and Acorn suit are tied for my favourite flying power-ups, I find them incredibly fun to use. Giga Bell may be more gimmick than power-up, but it is hella fun to use so it easily takes my favourite spot for 3D game power-ups.
I know that almost no one else thinks this way, but I've always loved the Spring Mushroom. It's just hilarious to me.

Tanuki, Metal Hat, Super Star and Fire Flower are my classic faves. Though I'd want the riding Turtle shell theme( Mario 64) playing when using these!

I definitely love a lot of the flight based power ups, Cape Feather and Wing Cap are very dear to me.
But I think my favorite might be the Fire Flower. Comes in clutch in the first final fight against Bowser and nothing feels better than stampeding through enemies and blasting them with pyro energy balls.

An awesome ranking of the power ups, I agree with the Cape Feather being number 1 for sure. Maybe a ranking of the Zelda items in the future, although that may be a tall order too.

Yeah, the winged cap really is next level, but mostly out of nostalgia tbh. Nowadays games where you can fly around are a dime a dozen but back in the N64 era, there was something so magical about the winged cap. Before then you never had that sense of freedom in a game.
I like that Jirard's cannon version of the first 3 Mario games is the all-stars version. Nothing against The NES but SNES was the console I grew up with
I can't get over the awkward brick breaking physics in the All Stars version of the first. I prefer NES for SMB and All Stars for 2 and 3.

Didn't even play the og NES version till my lil bro found a bootleg _100-games-in-one_ GBA cartridge on the street (which had a Mario reskin of _Final Fantasy 1_ on it. This is unrelated but funny).
