I was born and raised in Galveston, the place where the 1900 Storm hit, the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.
Then I moved across the causeway to Texas City; the place where the worst industrial accident occurred, the Great Explosion in 1947.
    Something about this area...

Ikr, up in Webster, things aren't too crazy, other than NASA, we used to be farming town which has some Japanese history. Down there, though, that's more interesting but crazy. This is the worst place to live in the country when it comes to natural disasters, _literally_ . Still not as bad Louisiana though just be thankful for that.

As bad as this storm was, it was nothing compared to the Galveston hurricane of 1900.

Ike was so bad and the rest of the world never knew how bad it was. I remember going down there 6 weeks afterwards and there was debris piled up as high as the bishops mansion right beside it. The flagship, gone but I guess we got the pleasure pier now

I live in Webster Texas which 26 miles northwest of there and we didn't flood as we are 32ft above sea level but we did evacuate. This was when I was 2, so I had no idea the Flagship existed, we had just taking pictures under the pier a year before when i was a baby. Then when I noticed that Pleasure Pier didn't exist at that point I asked my mom and she told me about it. We apparently stayed at the hotel. Now we go to the Hilton Galveston Resort. I looked up pictures of the Flagship after Ike and man that was scary lookin'.

@@WickedSlumpy Im so sorry for you, I didn't realize where that was but now I see. My aunt actually live there but she moved out, sold and moved in with my mom a few months before Rita hit and I guess Ike just did it in for y'all there.

Yep something I will never forget. I was there helping people before during and after. Fought fires with very Lil water. No power at night. Complete darkness. It was a crazy time. Marshal law enacted. Im glad to have experienced something of that magnitude. Was working when Harvey hit the mainland. Was doing the same thing for people during that hurricane.

I had water right up to the 2nd story { I lived upstairs }, and lived a block from the bayou.
Found my friend's bow & arrow case wedged 12 feet up in a tree in my back yard. Also found orange buoy balls in my yard, and the closest place they could have came from was 3 miles away!

I happened to be in Galveston County Jail (the new one thank gawd) when Ike hit. Now THAT was scary. The new jail is a lot closer to 45 (inland) than the old jail. And the outer walls around the pods were 16-18 ft. high. And the storm surge from Ike was coming over those walls and flooding into the jail. It was freaky.
If ever I had to choose btwn being in GCJ (or any jail) during Ike (or any hurricane), or spend a year in jail......HANDS DOWN I'd do the year. I'll never forget that experience.

I was living in Houston Texas during Ike and I was so greatful to my Abba that we lived on the third floor of our apartment complex. The winds and all was really bad and what was worse and why I was so glad of the 3rd floor was because we had no lights in the complex for almost 4 days and people's homes were being broken into. We would hear the glass breaking, sometimes we would hear people screaming right after the breaks or we would hear gunshots soon after. No police ever came but we were safe and tucked. Had enough food to pull us through and everything was grilled 😆.

Who can say where the road goes?
Where the day flows? Only time
And who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose? Only time
Who can say why your heart sighs
As your love flies? Only time
And who can say why your heart cries
When your love lies? Only time
Who can say when the roads meet?
That love might be in your heart?
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps all your heart?
    Night keeps all your heart
Who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose? Only time
And who can say where the road goes?
Where the day flows? Only time
    Who knows? Only time
    Who knows? Only time
I was born on Galveston Island. My first hurricane was "Carla" which took away the pleasure pier before the Flagstaff was built on it. I've experienced about 5 hurricanes living on Galveston. I was in the eyewall once and it was awesome. I hunkered down in one of the Ft. Crockett bunkers during a strong storm, too. I flew like a flag when the winds were said to have reached 100 MPR at the seawall, and flew though the air halfway across Seawall Blvd. when I finally let go. Dumb me just wanted to have sweet bragging rights. Well, I had to crash and burn to earn those rights I'll tell ya!

I remember seeing a sailboat on the Galveston bridge and I was floored at the sight of it! Worst hurricane ever! There were antiques floating under the bridge along with a refrigerator. Unbelievable that this storm could tear apart the most beautiful island of Galveston in one quick swoop.

They said that they were picking up bodies all over the Texas City dike's waterways; and putting them into ice trucks to remove them from there.I have no idea what the count was does anyone else?

  • @nottawa86

If you aren't from the Bay Area, or some other area that floods around the world. Then you have no idea what it's like, since I didn't flood yet I'm in Webster I guess I can't say I can fully understand how bad it is. But if you're not used to this stuff than you have no _idea_ just how bad it can get. I mean it is _bad_ If you wanna live down this way, pick somewhere in Houston and just visit Galveston. Even then though, half of Houston floods so you have to be ready to take those risks and floodproof your house to where it will be able to handle whatever is thrown at more than the next house over. Honestly, finding a place that doesn't flood like my mom did when she got this house was just pure luck. Finding dry spots like these is hard but definitely worth it. Just to be extra safe, stay away from bayous, bay, and at least 20 miles from the gulf at least, you do not want anywhere near water.

They build them strong but some are built stronger or the foundation was stronger or it got lucky, it's simply natural selection. Only the ones with the right adaptations will survive to breed and pass on their genes, like this house.
