Actually, "Zastava" is really famous. We had a title for the world's worst car for so many years. It was "Yugo 55", or "Yugo America". We were trying to sell it to Americans as the cheapest car ever, and some of them really bought it. That's when the real humiliation begun. We thought that there were so much poor people in America that needed a car. But they just laughed at us. Their poor people were the worst liberal capitalists of them all. Absolutely oblivious. They would rather live without any car, if that ment to support the richies. They are not a human beings, fighting for their human rights. They were mesmerized by TV.

Genesia, we do have Citroën and Peugeot in Indonesia, but you’re right-most people don’t pronounce them correctly here. I’ve heard them called “sitrun” and “pusot” before 😂.
The reason Citroën gets pronounced as “sitrun” by some (especially older folks) is tied to our history with Dutch-influenced spelling. Back then, the combination “oe” was used to represent the ⟨u⟩ sound. Modern Indonesian spelling later simplified this, replacing “oe” with just “u.”
Interestingly, many people (including Indonesians) mistakenly believe we used the Dutch alphabet, but this isn’t true. Indonesian spelling has undergone several reforms, making it quite different from Dutch. For example, the letter U in Indonesian is pronounced [u] just like the way it’s pronounced in Spanish or German, while in Dutch and French it’s pronounced as [y] (like ü in German). Similarly, the letter W (which Genesia pronounced in this video) is [w] in Indonesian but [ʋ] in Dutch and German.
There are so many differences between Indonesian and Dutch spelling that speakers of Spanish, Italian, and German often find Indonesian spelling much easier to learn than a Dutch person would!

For the time it was made, it was a very solid and cheap car (not best, not worst), but it wasn't the only one that Zastava made, there was the much better Zastava 101 and others.

    • @buca505

@ I was kidding, I actually learned to drive in Yugo, and even my driving instructor was joking how that is actually best thing that can happen to you, cause if you know how to drive one, all other vehicles will be easy to drive, including trucks and tractors lol
It was good car, for his time, cheap, you can fix it on parking lot, and all spear parts you can literally buy in shop around every corner.
Zastava 101 is 70’s car and my uncle had drove same even in 90’s, it was 25 years old when he finally sell one, and he said he never had better car after that. It was hack of a car for 70’s and it is interesting that Italian FIAT constructed one and then sold a license to Zastava to produce same, cause in Italy they believed in that time that hatchbacks don’t have future, and only 2 years after that VW start production of Golf mark I, also designed by Italian studio Bertone, and hatchbacks became most popular car type in Europe.
So Zastava was accidentally in front of times in 70’s. But in late 80’s it deteriorated and on the end, it totally collapsed in 90’s, during war and sanctions. Factory was even bombed by NATO in ‘99.
Now on that place, is assembly line belonging to Fiat-Chrysler group, making FIAT 500L model mostly.

19:30 In Japan, when Hyundai first entered the market a few years ago, it was pronounced as "Hyundai". However, it did not sell well and eventually withdrew. Recently, the company has re-entered the Japanese market and, for some reason, has been actively promoting the pronunciation "Hyundai" as "HyunDae". Nevertheless, most people in Japan still call it "Hyundai". This Japanese woman seems to be proficient in Korean, which is likely why she pronounces it as "HyunDae." In Japan, however, the vast majority of people continue to say "Hyundai."

Turkey used to have Anadol in the 1960's. After that, came Murat 124 and Murat 131. Then we had the "bird series" of Tofaş: Serçe (sparrow), Şahin (hawk), Doğan (falcon) and Kartal (eagle, the station-wagon), but they were originally Fiat models, so they might not count. And Serbia, during the Yugoslavia time used to have Yugo, which I think is the cutest car ever. Spain has SEAT, but it's long been owned by Volkswagen.
I don't think I have heard of any car named Genesis and I don't think in Turkish it would be pronounced like in here. It would be G as pronounced in "gate" or "Gary". And we never use Benz either, it's "Mersedes" and even "Merso". The Volkswagen pronunciation in Turkish was accurate (Vosvogen), but the subtitles gave it "Folksvagen". There's also the affectionate name "Vosvos", but that applies only for the OG of Volkswagen, the Beetle (which is called in Turkish as "Kaplumbağa", meaning "turtle"). I think that when it comes to Citroën, we tend to put the umlaut on the o and think of it as "Citröen" and pronounce it with ö (similar to German pronunciation). At least it's what I do, it's kinda stuck.

The German pronunciation for Citroen in the company's own advertising is like "Zitrön". (Because "o" followed by "e" is the alternative spelling of the german "ö".)
The correct pronunciation was also used in advertising years ago. I have no idea why they went back to the Germanized version.

Bugatti is complicated. An Italian man went to Germany to found a car company (also because a lot of the early engineering was happening in the country) and also met his German wife there. Then ww1 happened and Molsheim, where he based his company became French, later so did he. The company stopped existing for a while and was re-created in Italy. They went bankrupt again and Volkswagen bought it and placed the HQ (at least the final assembly) back in Molsheim, France to where it was originally founded, while pretty much all engineering and design was done by VW.
So you could say: It's an EU effort 😀

Now, German and English are not just both Germanic languages but also closer related as West Germanic languages. VW/Volkswagen should not be too difficult to already SEE that "Volk' is a cognate of 'Folk' and 'Wagen' exists also in English even if it is often used in a slightly different context (but still close enough to get the idea). No rocket science. I understand that many dont realize quickly that the English 'car' and the German 'Karre' or 'Karren' are also cognates but 'Volk' and 'Folk' or German 'Hund' and English 'Hound' (like in Grey Hound) should very quickly be noticed. And the 'double-U' is one of those inconsistent English pronunciation, because also in English one usually pronounce the letters like the start of words with that letter, only in a few cases its different not for logic but historical reasons. English often also speak the 'W' like the Germans (and others). You say 'Wagon' similar to German or 'West' (exactly like in German' etc... you dont say 'DoubleU-agon' or 'DoubleU-est'. The historic reason is that the Latin alphabet had no 'W' and also no 'U' and the 'V' was usually spoken as 'U'. Thats why you find on classic and neo-classic buildings often a 'V' instead of an 'U' like in 'AVGVSTVS' (instead of 'AUGUSTUS'). Now the Germanic 'W' was at (early-) medieval time added to the Latin alphabet and built just by doubling the 'V' which was still usually spoken as 'U' which resulted in many regions as 'DoubleU'. But the 'U' also was introduced which made this 'DoubleU' kind of meaningless plus in more modern times usually most languages tend to speak the alphabet in a consistent way of like starting words (in case of consonants just adding a vowel). Also the inconsistency with the 'T' in English is one of those things which makes English vocally less intelligible as it could be. You also say 'Tea' as hard 'T' like in German etc. but in other cases (as in the video) often more as a 'D' even if you pronounce it also harder like 'T' (Tea, Ten, Tsunami, tired, talk ...) - like in German. What exist in German is also some dialects or slopy everyday speaking who sometimes make the 'T' soft (which might be the reason why it became also in Standard-English a thing. Not enough academized!)
