A group of friends and I went and witnessed the first solar eclipse in 100 years for the contiguous US back in 2017. I almost got fired for taking the day off to do it, but I didn’t care, I was going. It was an incredible experience. The sound of the wildlife reacting, the eerie feeling, the drop in temp. I would recommend to anyone, if and when possible, never turn down a chance to experience it in person. It is truly an incredible experience that is impossible to describe. ❤ the video as always. 🙌

We had a complete solar eclipse pass over our city in 2017. As a photographer myself, the way the light changed that day was something I'll never forget. The shadows were incredible. I remember cars having to turn on their lights at 1:10PM. My colleagues stood out in the parking lot and just reveled in the surreal moment. Adults were acting like children, encapsulated by the moment, and the oddity of the time. I think you were right in your TV interview, the moment of full eclipse is emotional.
Cool vid! Me and my dad decided last minute to buy a couple swags and leave perth Tuesday night to see it, rough few days but was worth absolutely every second of it and now left with an experience we will never forget! Defintely something everyone should see in their life time if they can

Glad you got to see one, Kym. Its a great feeling. Many photogs get so carried away with the camera that they forget to look up! That light is hard to describe. Perhaps if you are here in the US for the 2024 eclipse you might get to look at the ground for some very strange visual effects. Everything becomes wavy.
I was lucky enough to kick back in a deck chair for the 2017 total eclipse on my own property. It was a singular experience. During totality, my dog dug a hole and curled up to go to sleep. The event made me giddy for the rest of the day. I'm glad you got to see this latest eclipse, Kym.

It's a hell of experience isn't it? I'd seen plenty of partial and annular solar eclipses and in 2017 we traveled to Oregon to see the total solar eclipse. I was nervous like you, running two cameras (one attached to a 5" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and the other to a 70-200 lens) while my daughter ran a third (connected to a 50-500mm lens). The experience was surreal, almost visceral. I read a quote about a total solar eclipse compared to a total solar eclipse... "A partial solar eclipse is like going to the opera but listening from the lobby". I agree with that sentiment. Totality was over two minutes for us so there was some time to just look around and enjoy the experience. We were in a Walmart parking lot and that was surreal too. The manager brought all the employees out to watch. I wish I'd gotten a picture of that. I hope you had a moment to enjoy the experience. I'm looking forward to the 2024 total solar eclipse that'll be visible across a wide swath of the United States. I did pretty good with my pictures but this time I'll be more prepared and I can look at my exposure settings from 2017.

I saw a solar eclipse back in the late 80's or early 90s, and it was pretty cool. It wasn't amazing, but still pretty cool. All the flowers closed their petals and the birds went quite like it was nighttime. Luckily we had proper arc welding masks so we got a great view of it.
I saw my only total solar eclipse when i was a young kid in school in England . The teachers handed out little squares of tinted glass . I'm 70 now , I shall never see another . Good on you Kim for going .
We were in Exmouth the week before, the buzz was amazing, We watched the Total eclipse from Thevenard island and it was awesome. (I'll be putting out a video in the next week hopefully)

Dirty Carnarvon, trying to do you in! Good thing you still made it on the local TV! 😁 I saw an eclipse in Europe in the early 2000's, and it wasn't that exciting. I remember the odd shadows. You should definitely stop by NASA the next time you're coming through Houston. It's near the bay, so you can get some good seafood, though there's a ton of good restaurants. Or come down to Galveston, where your odds of being shot are much lower. 🎉
I live in the path of the 2017 eclipse that crossed the US. I didn't have to go any further than my office parking lot to view it. I took pictures of the entire eclipse sequence from beginning to end. This, of course, took hours. I didn't have a tracking mount so I had to constantly adjust the camera to keep the sun centered in the frame. Fortunately, I did have a geared tripod head which made it much easier to make the small adjustments necessary with my 800mm lens. We had less than 2 minutes of totality so I was very busy during shooting different exposures trying to capture the dynamic range of the eclipse. I had several presets prepared with exposure bracketing that helped a lot, but still busy. Considering this was my first attempt, the results were good but not great. Looking back I wished I had spent more time looking up and less at my camera. Fortunately, I get a 2nd chance next April. On April 8, 2024, another eclipse will transit North America, making landfall along the west coast of Mexico, moving up through central US, cutting across the great lakes, Erie and Ontario, and finally heading into the North Atlantic at Newfoundland. This one won't go over my house but it would only require 3-4 hours driving should I wish to see it. I'll probably be driving a little further to view it with my family about 7 hours away. My parent's house sits on the edge of the path (99.998% obscured but not total) so we won't have far to go to get 2-3 minutes of totality. This time I will spend more time looking up. Here is a funny (and sad) aftermath to the 2017 US eclipse. Since this viewed and photographed by so many people, undoubtedly many people got it wrong. The following is a link to a story from Lensrentals, a photographic equipment rental company, detailing the damaged equipment they received back. I rented my long lens from them so I know that they sent out warnings to all their customers and still people fried some very expensive gear. Great Video - Dirty Fuel is one of the problems one faces during outback travel, petrol issues easier to resolve than modern diesel engines, I hope your trip home is uneventful
Love your videos. Questions: Why do you need gas cans? Are there no gas stations along the way? And why are you making your wife drive for a 6 hour drive? If I'm in the car, my wife never has to drive regardless of how long the trip is (I've done 14 hours straight before) but then I'm in Texas and cultures are different, I guess.
