    Ladies and gentlemen: The Clash. Embodiments of true class and integrity. The kind that never forgets its roots. And where Mick Jones, with toothy grace and genuine humility, stands on that stage to "accept this award on behalf of ALL garage bands..." That says everything, and couldn't be said better -- to a venue filled with sell-out music industry slugs. But, thankfully, with some Clash fans in the back rows and in the wings, to save the day.
    R.I.P., Joe. You were an unfathomably rare soul in a hideous business. To your greatest fans, you and your music live forever.

      Well, this garage band is grateful to Mick from The Clash to Big Audio Dynamite. They've been making a difference in my life since the 70's, and it's no wonder that the band my friends and I started years ago and still play in is a Clash cover band that also does reggae songs.

    My favorite part of this speech is Terry Chimes acknowledging Topper Headon. Why Topper couldn't attend is a mystery but it was very generous of Terry to salute his successor, who is largely considered the true Clash drummer.👏🏼👏🏼

    Keep watching to the very end, to get the the clincher.
    It was a damn tragedy for Joe to die so young, but especially to die prior to this event. It would have been so great to see them play together again. But Joe's lyrics will ring true forever. My personal favourite line is "You must not act, the way you were brought up." (from "The Call Up").

    • @bhdctn
      @bhdctn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a great line from their most under rated and most experimental album. I do and don't act the way I was brought up. The Clash opened my budding Liberal eyes at a very early age. I was 6th grade first hearing the Clash and 7th grade buying Sandanista!

    The Clash created a sound that started on those steps in Camden Town and ended on the international stage. No one - not any other band - has created the variety of music that resonates over the generations like The Clash.

    The parallels between Paul Simonon and Sid Viscous are interesting: both were cool kids in the scene, with a great look-but neither could initially play a note. History has proven they were both drafted into their respective bands for the cool factor.
    But that’s where the parallels end.
    Paul went on to become a stronger and stronger musician, getting better and better and encompassing cool. And in fact, his initial limitations helped shape the sound of The Clash: he played mostly reggae basslines as they were easier to play than rock-and look how that shaped the sound of the band! Whereas Sid bought into his own myth, stopped growing as a musician (or caring) and became a hapless, junkie caricature of himself. A doomed, talentless clown.
    In fact, I have to say, looking back, that The Clash were the true winners between the two bands. Which is a shame-The Pistols we’re brilliant, but could have been so much more. But didn’t. Whereas The Clash went from strength to strength.
    Paul
