    Excalibur is a 1981 dramatic sword and sorcery film directed, produced and co-written by John Boorman that retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. Based solely on the 15th century Arthurian romance, Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory, Excalibur stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Corin Redgrave as Cornwall, and Patrick Stewart as Leodegrance. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature. The film's soundtrack features the music of Richard Wagner and Carl Orff, along with an original score by Trevor Jones.
    Wilhelm Richard Wagner (22 May 1813 - 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is primarily known for his operas (or, as some of his later works were later known, "music dramas"). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. Until his final years, Wagner's life was characterised by political exile, turbulent love affairs, poverty and repeated flight from his creditors. His controversial writings on music, drama and politics have attracted extensive comment in recent decades, especially where they express antisemitic sentiments.
    Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) WWV 86D, is the last in Richard Wagner's cycle of four music dramas titled Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung, or The Ring for short). It received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 17 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of the Ring.
    Act 3: In the woods by the bank of the Rhine, the Rhinemaidens mourn the lost Rhine gold. Siegfried happens by, separated from the hunting party. The Rhinemaidens urge him to return the ring and avoid its curse, but he laughs at them and says he prefers to die rather than bargain for his life. They swim away, predicting that Siegfried will die and that his heir, a lady, will treat them more fairly.
    Siegfried rejoins the hunters, who include Gunther and Hagen. While resting, he tells them about the adventures of his youth. Hagen gives him another potion, which restores his memory, and he tells of discovering the sleeping Brünnhilde and awakening her with a kiss. Hagen stabs him in the back with his spear. The others look on in horror, and Hagen explains in three words ("Meineid rächt' ich!" - "I have avenged perjury!") that since Siegfried admitted loving Brünnhilde, the oath he swore on Hagen's spear was obviously false, therefore it was Hagen's duty to kill him with it. Hagen calmly walks away into the wood. Siegfried recollects his awakening of Brünnhilde and dies. His body is carried away in a solemn funeral procession (Siegfried's funeral march) that forms the interlude as the scene is changed and recapitulates many of the themes associated with Siegfried and the Wälsungs.
    The fire flares up, and the hall of the Gibichungs catches fire and collapses. The Rhine overflows its banks, quenching the fire, and the Rhinemaidens swim in to claim the ring. Hagen tries to stop them but they drag him into the depths and drown him. As they celebrate the return of the ring and its gold to the river, a red glow is seen in the sky. As the people watch, deeply moved, the interior of Valhalla is finally seen, with gods and heroes visible as described by Waltraute in Act 1. Flames flare up in the Hall of the Gods, hiding it and them from sight completely. As the gods are consumed in the flames, the curtain falls.

    In my opinion, no film or television drama that I have seen has ever done true justice to the Arthurian legends, though Excalibur comes pretty close. The scene after Arthur is mortally wounded when Percival throws Excalibur into the lake is beautifully shot. With Wagner's Siegfried's funeral march, it is spine tingling cinema.

    • @marcela21884

      In the film it was Sir Percival, but in "Morte d'Arthur" I believe that it was Sir Bedivere.

      @lp2294 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The legend varies in its telling so much that there is no 'right' answer as such. In most traditional variants of the legend, Geoffrey is right, it was Bedivere who was asked by Arthur to return Excalibur to the lake. Lancelot arrived too late from Brittany to fight at Camlan.

      A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:
      Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

      Agreed, even Guy Ritchie attempted to remake Excalibur with Legend of the Sword. But in the end, it failed miserably.
      Few other King Arthur films measure up to this, in terms of appeal. Save for Knights of the Round Table, Sword in the Stone, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and First Knight

    I stumbled upon this while listening to Jerry Goldsmith's score to 13th Warrior. Both of these have hit on a personal level because the college marching band I was in lost a freshman member of their dance line in a horrible car wreck on Labor Day. I didn't know her very well, but it still tore me up emotionally because of the hurt my friends that are still marching are going through. Listening to them has help because their endings deal with the hero finding peace in death and being taken to paradise. Thanks for posting this and God bless. I guess even after death, Wagner and Goldsmith are helping lives with their amazing music.

    • @causabon99

      If the voice of God is to be heard through the music or RW (and I believe it is) then it is in despite of the man himself, who was most likely to be composing draped in silks and furs with a comfortably built mistress stroking his dick, filling his glass, and generally providing succour to the sensualist he was. There's a pure impurity in his music - it's utterly ravishing - even Parsifal is orgasmic.

    One of the top five best uses of 'classical music' in a film score. Boorman completely nails the chivalric Arthurian legend in this flim and the music is one of the reasons why. Like all historians I could take the film apart on the grounds that if Arthur (I think he did btw) existed he was probably a Romano/British war leader who lived with in a 100 years of the Roman withdrawal from Britain, but I just turn my historian brain off and enjoy its magic.

    For whatever reason using Wagner's music in Excalibur was pure magic it worked great. The music is as epic as the film. There is a fitting appropriate sense of doom and tragedy in both Siegfried's death which after Brunnhilde immolates herself over his funeral pyre brings about the end of the world the Gotterdammerung and the death of King Arthur after the final battle with Mordred. His body (not dead and able to be saved by 3 mysterious ladies on a barge) is taken to the isle of Avalon where he can rest and return to the world in the near future. Boorman also made use of Wagner's Prelude to Tristan and Isolde to serve as the love theme for Lancelot & Guenevere.
