Omg sir. I lost my grandmother Iverson 20 years ago, and she made ice cream with evaporated milk. No one knew the recipe but it's some of the best ice cream I've ever had. From my memory as a child I believe this is the one. Thank u so much, I'll try it this wknd.
I also grew up eating the best homemade ice cream from recipes passed down through our family. They all had raw eggs included and we never got sick. I have an old recipe for snow cream that also had a raw egg. Delishious! Great point about the mayo, Chef...
I watch your videos when I am tired of all the pretentiousness of other videos and all the health food fads. Thank you for your common sense, intelligence, and delicious foods!
Thank you so much for this video. I used to make homemade ice cream when I was raising my children, they are all adults. Recently I found out that my favorite store bought ice cream contains high fructose corn syrup and I didn't agree with that. Needless to say, I will be buying a new ice cream freezer. ❤
This video made me think of my Aunt Jannie. She made homemade ice cream for all our family summer gatherings and at church would sell it for 10 cents a cone. Miss those days.😊
Yep, Chef J. We had a hand churn Unit. I make vanilla butter pecan and cream adding a bit more cream and milk and eggs. Congratulations. On bringing back memories of my Mom. . it was always a hit of the neighborhood. I have folks begging for it
Some people use salt in their mixture. However, the time I put salt in my mixture it did not freeze. I remember using the crank freezer as a child, I definitely like the electric ones more. My family used your recipe, but cooked the mixture and cooled it before freezing. Born in MS, and raised in the Steel City, Indiana. Love and appreciate your video.
Chef Jeffrey, They say a good mom used to let us lick the beaters. But a GREAT mom would turn off the mixer first! I love your videos, the recipes, and the heart that you put into it all.
Oh that looks like heaven! Plus, this being done as a family event brings lifetime comforting memories. Thank you Chef Jeff for always sharing these meaningful family recipes. These are the foods that sustain our souls....for real! Happy 4th of July to you and your family and friends! 🇺🇲🌞🇺🇲
Oh man that looks so good ! Back in the day instead of eggs my mothers family used junket tablets .I don’t even know what or why,my husbands mom cooked a custard instead of raw eggs .I’ve done both they are awesome 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yes!! When i was a small child my Grandmother & all my aunts & uncles took turns churning the ice cream , we had fresh peaches ir it from my Granny's farm way down in Georgia I never got sick Im 75 years old now xoxoxo
I've been saying I'm going to buy an ice cream maker. I remember hand turning with my daddy when I was little. This would save money with everything being much more expensive these days as well! This looks SO good. Thx again, Chef Jeff!
My mom’s family is in South Catalina and at our family get togethers there would be 10 or more ice cream makers going at once. Some electric and some hand crank. All different flavors and each one was handed down for generations. Love and miss those times. I now live in the Philippines and I am getting a ice cream freezer shipped here and I am going to make it for my family and friends here who have never had anything like this.
I'm sooooo glad U let people know that "MAYO" is made with raw eggs! It's in the Ingredients section! And some people even heat it up Mayo on sandwiches and in potato salad--that can poison their system! (Just watch the video, keep your negative comments to yourself(ves) and just enjoy it. Or don't watch it!)
Rinsing the evaporated milk cans was not just about not being wasteful, but it also put just enough water back into the evaporated milk to make that ice cream freeze up harder. Without the water you get a "softer" ice cream. Mom always said that you either needed cream or evaporated milk to get a "creamy" texture, and you needed a little water to get the ice. Mom also taught me that there is no substitute for Watkins Vanilla. "If you're gonna take the time to make it, use the best ingredients you can get" was always her philosophy, and the brand of vanilla was not negotiable!
Mmmm delicious 😋 Chef J… I haven’t had homemade vanilla ice cream since my church days as a child-the elder ladies at the church would make it for the church and serve after church… wonderful memories
My neighbor who use to watch me would take us to the park and make homemade ice cream. It was soooooo good. Think I'm going to make this for my nieces and nephews.
Whoa nelly, this brings me back to my childhood. First of all, this was a treat that we got maybe 3 times a year only. Definitely made around the 4th of July every year. My dad and us kids were responsible for the churning. He did most of it and he would have absolutely loved this ice cream machine! I don't have my mom's recipe but I am sure that it's similar. There is NOTHING like that taste of homemade ice. Just a few ingredients but the best ice cream ever!. Thank you for sharing such a precious family recipe and tips!. Also yes, please block anyone coming on here trying to argue about the eggs. I doubt that anyone will cause they know how that's going to land. lol!
Wonderfully made. I have always wanted to know how to make homemade ice cream, now I'm going out and get an electric ice cream maker. thanks Chef Jeff have a blessed fourth🇺🇸🇺🇲❤️🙏🏾🍨
my Mom always had me slush out cans especially tomatoes. she was a Wakins door to door saleslady. i appreciate your recipes, advice and ethics. perhaps one day I'll be lucky enough to meet you.
I think the sugar cooks the eggs when you blend the two. Although, my mom always cooked her filling but I have eaten it made this way and it is also very good.
LOVE IT CHEF! My family recipe comes from a Montgomery Wards Ice Cream Maker that was over 65 years old handed down to me, Oak bucket, copper topped motor, she gave up the ghost about 3 years ago but I kept the recipe book. My new "old fashioned" machine has an oak veneered plastic bucket and plastic topped motor but still does a good job. Making the recipe today, chocolate, I know not your favorite, my wife's either but she loves it! Happy Fourth!
I remember as a kid having a neighbor who would bride us to help her make home made ice cream. Our job was to do the churning by hand with one of those old school ice cream makers. That was some of the best ice cream.
Yes sir, Chef 👨🍳, my grandfather made ice cream exactly like this 😋. I had a tall Mason jar and straw and put vanilla ice cream with rootbeer soda and it's on😁😋 Thanks good ice cream 🍦
Thanks so much for sharing.... this old man forgot about this great homemade treat. I too was VERY glad when dad got the electric ice cream maker. There's NO taste difference between hand churning and electric. Only that you can lift the spoon to eat this awesome stuff versus your arm being pooped.
Ì'm so glad I came across this video. I have been hungry for homemade ice cream for weeks. You make it about the same way that we do. I enjoyed the video. Thank you so much.
GM Chef, like I said you take me back when my mom was round making homemade ice cream. Having to take turns turning the ice cream, til the electric one came into play. Ur right my mom used the raw eggs & we never got sick. TYFS!! Happy Holiday!!! 😎🎆✨🎆
Oh my Goodness. you have brought back so many memories. I can taste a lil salt and yes. we fought for the damper! amazing thank you cause i did not know how to make it!!!!!!
Homemade ice cream was my childhood favorite we made it from scratch and took turns turning it so glad the made the electric turner thanks Chef Jeffrey
Homemade ice cream is the best ice cream. Thanks for sharing your recipe Chef J. I will use this recipe with the raw eggs too. It the only way I know how to make homemade ice cream.
I know about the old time crank ice cream. My Grandfather and Uncle used to crank ice cream for us when we come visit. That's the only time I had fresh eggs and meats. My father side of the family lived in the country. I miss that food. I used to make ice cream for my kids- electric machine. Now I have a mixer that makes ice cream.
Hi, Jeffrey! I'm canning beef stew right now, and decided to watch a few YT video's while I wait for the canner to process. I grew up dirt poor in the No. Virginia mountains, and this is exactly how we used to make ice cream! Now I have an attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer that makes ice cream - Smaller batches since it's just me and my grown son. Two quarts is plenty for us, and I have containers to store the extra in. Can you believe these people today? Well, bless their hearts! I now live in North Florida, where I grow a big garden and raise a bunch of chickens. I routinely make fresh mayonnaise for macaroni or potato salad, and my family has been eating ice cream made with raw eggs for all of my 69 years! I honestly think you can be too clean. If you don't expose yourself to some dirt and a germ or two, you stay sick all the time! I've quit going out to eat - I just don't really like eating margarine, food coloring, and "natural flavors," whatever that means. I also happen to like my steaks rare and my burgers medium rare. So many places are afraid to cook them that way. The older I get, the more things seem to be going insane.
Back in the day when I was a kid I remember sitting on ice cream thing turning it on the Fourth of July .You don’t want to Gooding yes sir thanks for sharing how awesome day. Happy fourth to you buddy.
61 yrs old. As a child, our church would host ice cream socials. The youth group kids would do all the cranking to produce the best ice cream I've ever had. It wasn't on my shopping list until now but I think I'm due for one of those electric freezer-things. Thanks for that, I'll let you know how my first batch turns out. 😋
Agreed 👍 my old Methodist Church would have a peach festival every year and I remember going and getting that homemade vanilla ice cream for my mom and bringing it home running so that it didn't melt talk about feeling melancholy and remembering the past. They were simple days for sure
Chef Jefferyyyy, you made that look super easy. Just thinking about the hot fudge back then…yummy! My grandfather had a store, and my memory is still intact enough to have a smell sensation of the squeaky wood floors😁 So, yep, the on-site butcher, bottled sodas, penny candies, and so on…the world has definitely taken a hard left turn from such a beautiful moment in time.
I just got my grandpas old crank-style maker; spent many hour turning that handle, and I’m looking forward to my grandkids doing the same! Grandpa used raw eggs too, we’re all still fat and healthy!
Been looking for an old family recipe for home made ice cream. I will cook mine because that’s what my Mom did. Thanks you, it looks good 😊 and she also covered it like that too.
Thank you Chef Jeffrey, never had this method, no burning the custard, that's a relief for me right there. LOL It's a SOLID RECIPE...so easy. I've been looking for an ole skool recipe for years, this looks great.
This was one of my favorite family traditions every 4th of July, on Hilton Head Island. And, you are right…we used to fight over that ice cream stir paddle. lol
I grew up eating homemade ice cream just like this....with raw eggs also. Like you it never hurt any of us. It was delicious then and I still eat it today. Happy 4th of July to everyone from North Mississippi. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
Yeph......no one got sick.....unless we ate too much....lol. Our get togethers were usually roughly 60 people. BUT. AT LEAST PART OF THE MILK CAME FROM PET A D BUTTERMILK OUT IN THE FIELD AND THE EGGS FRIM THE HEN HOUSE.
Oh, I remember my cousins and I taking turns to turn that crank with anticipation of that delicious ice cream. Great video. I just pulled out my electric ice cream maker and wrote my grocery list for the ingredients. Thanks for the tutorial.
Hello Everyone. Chef I am going to buy me a ice cream maker. I have had homemade ice cream since I was a teenager. Yours definitely has my mouth watering for some now. Thanks for the recipe. God bless you.
I love that you have 100 year old recipe from your great grandmother! I hope someday you find the original recipe and show it to us I love seeing old brown pieces of paper written by great grandmothers that are old and stand with memories filled with love… This is a fabulous recipe I used to make it every year for birthdays and Fourth of July I’d make two different flavors of fruit flavor and either vanilla or chocolate your least favorite thing in the world sorry… I love making ice cream I’ve since lost my ice cream maker I’ll have to get another one now that I have great grandchildren I didn’t have the ice cream maker that you put salt in either kind you put in the freezer with the cord but I think next time I’m gonna get that beautiful one that you had for sale that I should’ve bought last time then I’m kicking myself for not getting I’m looking forward to your new Thursday deals of the week! Happy happy Fourth of July to you and everyone #Helping others with a purpose big huge Gigantic love from Colorado
There's no denying homemade ice cream isn't a treat! I use to always get a Chocolate malt, with a raw egg and a banana added from a place in Omaha called Goodrich. They were egg-cellent! The place is still in business there, but unfortunately as time would have it changed, and nothing like they were. I would hope all us Older school family members would know about adding water to cans! .. and I hope the family member that sent the Dawn, is on here watching and listening! 😄 Have a good day! 🇺🇲🙏
I have no words…except maybe one..YUM!!!! Thank you for the video and Happy 4th! You are a TRUE PATRIOT!!!! I wish many so called patriots could hear what a true red white and blue patriot sounds like.
The main thing I remember about making ice cream with my family was that it took several minutes for my butt to thaw out after my turn at churning! lol My dad always had to get another towel for me... I didn't want to get off the thing. Because last one cranking the handle got first dibs on the paddle! lol Great memories.
Thanks Chef Jeff. I'm always learning something new from you. I never used water because I was told it would form ice crystals in the icecream after you freeze it. I'm definitely going to try it with the water now ❤❤❤
Man, THI took me bacck to our 4th of July's where we would churn that ice cream by hand. THat was the BEST ice cream EVER! I rally couldn't remember if we used raw eggs OR if we cooked it like a custard first. Thanks, Chef Jeff! Your recipes bring back those childhood memories. Thanks SO MUCH! Happy 4th of July!!! MUCH Love!
Dear Chef Jeff you made ma laugh when u said two cans of water , and before you said about your grand mother rinsing the tins out ,I was already thinking that I'd rinse the cans out , just made me smile
Thanks for the video and the recipe. I will try it but not with raw eggs. In my youth, I got sick from drinking raw eggs in a milk shake. I never ate raw eggs again. I also do not drink raw milk (especially raw goat milk). I am now too old to risk getting food poisoning.
There is nothing like homemade ice cream I have always heard.I never had any but I am going to try making some. We always had ice milk from the grocery. Looked like ice cream. Now I eat Ice cream, orange sherbet, and Italian ice.I watched the video twice. I missed the vanilla. I guess I would put it in last. Look so good. When I buy the ice cream at the store, I taste eggs. I do not care. It is good. This is some great ice cream.
That's what we used to use for making our icecream. I wish I could have gotten one of the old school icecream maker. Happy late 4th July chef Jeff blessings to you and mum. Shalom 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽
This is how my mom made ice cream just like you, Chef Jeffrey. My husbands family makes custard ice cream. I make it both ways and it’s always good. You just can’t have a 4th of July celebration without homemade ice cream.
Chef Jeffrey, now this is the homemade ice cream, I remember as a little girl, growing up in the country. We would eat during Church events, Family Reunions, Juneteenth, 4th of July, or anytime it was taste for it. Thank you for this delicious 😋 recipe. Happy 4th of July to you, your Mother, Brother and Family. Stay safe.
Chef thank you for doing this ice-cream. It brings back a lot of memories. My mother would make some for the fourth of July and for the church on special occasions. The mayo was funny too me. Look at Ceasars salad dressing. Whole fish in it. Mustard has raw egg also.
You are such a tease Chef! That looks so refreshing. Great tips especially for those first time making ice cream. Great recipe too. Thank you. Have a blessed 4th.
My Grandpa had the old hand crank ice cream maker back in the day when we had family get togethers, we would take turns cranking the handle till you couldn't crank no more. those days are gone now as most family members are all over the place.
When you blend the sugar with the eggs, it ultimately cooks the eggs. I was taught that in culinary school
So
@@Marcuswelby-nx2te So you didn't know that.
thanks for tip, so I can blend the milk, eggs and sugar together the day before, put it in the fridge and the bacteria from the eggs would be gone?
Ideally
But it's basically done at that point, so it should go into the freezer at that point
@@latonyamarlow2517 Well I meant so I can have the liquid mix ready in the fridge overnight so the following day the Icecream maker is ready to go?
I didn't give how much sugar even tell us how much sugar mix with the eggs
I remember my older sisters making the snow ice cream. But living close to US Steel, pollution put an end to that.
@@rosecherry9604 To your taste. It depends on how much you're making, you know. I'd start with 1/2 to 3/4 cup and add from there if you need...
Brings back the best childhood memories; we all took our turn at churning and wood fight over the churn when it was done🥰
This reminds me of my Dad making ice cream exactly like this when we were growing up. Rest Daddy. Thank you for the sweet memories ❤️
Enjoy old school. This is how my grandma done her ice cream. Im thankful to get your recipe. I will pass it on to my family
Takes me right back to the early '70's when my mother would make homemade ice cream for the 4th of July. Thanks Chef Jeffery! ❤❤ 👍🏾👍🏾
Yesssss!
I have folks begging for it
I love making homemade ice cream. I bought two different mixers, one for 2 gallon and 1.5 gallon. Good recipe you have Sir!
I actually just verified myself to comment on this video. The way you told people to fuck off without saying it was beautiful.
Some people use salt in their mixture. However, the time I put salt in my mixture it did not freeze. I remember using the crank freezer as a child, I definitely like the electric ones more. I love your videos, the recipes, and the heart that you put into it all.
Hahahah! Good one. My mom must have been great. I'm pretty sure she always turned it off. I think. lolol
wow your recipe is the most easy and simple to make home made ice cream of all flavors too
Oh that looks like heaven! Plus, this being done as a family event brings lifetime comforting memories. Thank you Chef Jeff for always sharing these meaningful family recipes. These are the foods that sustain our souls....for real! Happy 4th of July to you and your family and friends! 🇺🇲🌞🇺🇲

Sweet Baby Jesus bring back some great memories of times it was my turn on ice maker because if you didn't not ice cream for you

Our get togethers were usually roughly 60 people. BUT. AT LEAST PART OF THE MILK CAME FROM PET A D BUTTERMILK OUT IN THE FIELD AND THE EGGS FRIM THE HEN HOUSE.
That's exactly how my grandmother used to make ice cream thank you for the reminder today is July 1st on the 4th mmmmmm ice cream
Thee best!! I love your video. My Aunt use to make vanilla custard ice cream. I WILL be making this ice cream 7/4/23. Thank you very much!!👏🏽❤️👏🏽❤️
Oh, I remember my cousins and I taking turns to turn that crank with anticipation of that delicious ice cream.
Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate that
There's no denying homemade ice cream isn't a treat!
This reminds me fixing 4th July ice cream for family packing it thank you for sharing
Omgosh....this looks so good, got to try it , I love to try old recipes....thank you so much for sharing
Very nice. I'm from Houston, and this is a recipe that my mom and dad used also. Thanks for posting this!
This brings back so many memories from my childhood. Thank you so much for sharing. Love from NJ. 💜
Lol😂! I love the story of how it came to add two cans of water
Good Morning Chef thank you for this. This is the same recipe my Grand mother used. Love you sir
Chef Jeff, that’s the recipe. Yes it is some good homemade ice cream. Thanks for sharing it with others. Take care. cheers ♥️🙏🏽
Nothing better!! YUM!!!
Glad I ran across this. I have been wanting to make some ice cream. Thank you and God Bless you.❤
This is how my mom made ice cream just like you, Chef Jeffrey.
Good evening Chef Jeffery. Looks delicious. Thank you ❤❤❤❤
You are such a tease Chef! That looks so refreshing. Great tips especially for those first time making ice cream. Great recipe too. Thank you. Have a blessed 4th.
I like making ice cream this way, thank you sir ❤❤❤❤
Looks so delicious and perfect!!! Mmm!
My Grandpa had the old hand crank ice cream maker back in the day when we had family get togethers, we would take turns cranking the handle till you couldn't crank no more. those days are gone now as most family members are all over the place.
That's was fun times back in the day ❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thanks for the ice cream recipe. Looks delicious
