Grinning through this whole review, I LOVE this theme, I was completely sold as soon as I saw that the President wears sunglasses. This is like a simplified, competitive, board-game version of Tropico. I definitely have to pick this up!
So I've owned this game since shortly after it came out, and I introduced it to a group of coworkers that I'm slowly converting into gamers, I started them off with Catan, then nudged a few others on them, and after watching your review I'm glad to see that other people get into commenting on how the president's bribe has offended them.
Junta 1st edition in my opinion is better. They both have their pros and cons. Viva El Presidente is more streamlined, being quicker and easier to pick up and play. However I think the original edition allows and encourages more alliances, shady deals, backstabbing and so on. Which to me is what the games all about.
The original Junta is one of my favorite games of all time - it was so devious and irreverent. Interesting to see this version - it looks significantly different.
The old game, while very very fun, had some major issues; horrible components, complicated rules and you really had to be at least 6 if not the full 7 to get the most out of it. The way it was basically a totally different game when you went to war, was also very weird, still fun, but you then had to work with a totally different set of rules I think I may have to get this version, as my friends are weary of the game, which is a shame because when you really get into it it is such a blast.
