When I was very young, Karras took me away from the Foundry Mother and said, "Thou art the Child of my endeavors. Follow me, and thou shalt inherit the earth."
Thief II is the result of an absolutely excellent storyline mixed with amazing atmosphere, frightening, and yet propelling the player to proceed to stop the madness of Karras. This story blows the scripting of many films away, it's just that damn good!
"Stood the Master Builder upon the Ground. And He saw that the Ground was Good, and Clean. No Grasses marred His Path. Nay, not a wisp of villous weed did spoil His view. Let thy Furnace be Fueled. Let thy Buildings be Sound. Let thy Foes be Vanquished. And all thy Endeavors be a Blessing unto thee."
Infact let me add that this ending is a dramatic one in comparison to the others. 1st, it lets in on Garetts change of heart. No longer does he selfishly ignores the pleas of those around him. 2nd. Garett returns to the keepers, WILLFULLY. The entire personality of the main character and the plot goes into a B line the likes of which makes george lucas and his 3 prequels look like spinoffs. The thing about thief and its writing is that it is " subtle" and you have to think to enjoy.
Yep. I wonder if in his final moments he considered that maybe activating his doomsday plan when he already knew Garrett was in the building and up to something, was perhaps a tiny, little, MASSIVE MISTAKE.
I agree. Just look at the amount of dialogue that he got in the last level. He reminded a bit of Dr. Breen from Half-Life 2 (One speech in particular was VERY similar) in term of omnipresence. I agreed with Garret there. "Just keep preaching, Karras."
LET THY FURNACE BE FUELED (Builder fuel us) LET THY BUILDINGS BE SOUND (Builder fuel us) LET THY FOES BE VANQUISHED (Builder fuel us) AND ALL THINE ENDEAVORS BE A BLESSING UNTO THEE (Builder, forger, father, fuel us now)
thanks for this, i just finished the game a few minutes ago, but the cutscene didnt play! thanks to the builder for youtube and dedicated fans :) and computers of course :P oh and the internet....
Fantastic trilogy of games, though I wished the third one had been made with the same engine & designs as the first two. A world where the Keepers secretly maintain balance between nature & technology. The first game showed what happens when nature overrides the balance. As a result of the first game's events, the second game showed the other side of the spectrum where technology runs amok. And lastly in the third game, we see what happens when the "neutral" order - the Keepers - find _themselves_ out of balance.
Just finished this game again for the who knows which time. Ugh can be a very trying on your patience, but these little cutscene gems always made it worth it.
damn this was awesome.....and now im sad cuz i officially finished all 3 theif games [yes i like deadly shadows, it was good and got me into theif] i wish there was more, [pretends the 4th game doesnt exist] im liking this as much as i love deus ex
Not sure : at a moment in the game, we heard a random guard asking to a mechanist how the mechanical eyes can identify people and distinguish a guard from a thief. The mechanist said something in the lines of "join our order to have the answer". Some kind of ancient artifact, probably (if not, the rust gas might corrode them).
Naw, no reason to think that - and no indication that the Mechs were extracting nervous systems from their victims lol. By this point, the Servants were instructed to the gardens of their estates and manors, because the rustgas feeds off of plant life, therefore can spread sufficiently enough to take out the entire city.
Oh I love this game. I didn't mind Karras dying (sp?). I actually liked it when he did. He was kind of anoying. I like the sound he makes when the rust gas comes
@@BelethorsGeneralGoodsStore Oh boy, it's weird to see a comment from so long ago, what a little weirdo I was. And yeah, that little "mrrph" makes his ironic death all the more satisfying
I believe they shouldn't have messed with this game and instead let it remain a unique classic for good. Unless Thief 4 turns out to be an extraordinary phenomenon.
DS wasn't that bad, just flawed, if you have the Sneakyupgrade installed it's actually pretty good, downgrades for console was very apparent but atleast the game was salvageable
The keepers don't see the future exactly, they have prophecies revealed to them by the glyphs, which seem to be some kind of revelatory magic possibly controlled by some sort of intelligence, but to my knowledge, that mystery is never revealed. But the prophecies are clearly focused on Garret. He fulfilled 2 and there was one more. It's not explicit that Garret wants to become a keeper again, it's just clear that he's accepted the prophecies are actually predicting real things and he can't escape them.
It's still a pretty good ending in that Karras is defeated and good prevails. I agree it's just a bit disappointing when you are expecting a more close combat big "The Matrix" style ending. but then, that isn't what Thief is all about, and besides, rather than big FMVs, the makers intentionally made most of the story available through the game itself (i.e. hearing karras' conversations etc.).
Thief2 ABSOLUTELY ROCKED! Best GD game I ever played, and in it's day the most innovative. T3 sucked. Eidos please take note. 1. Open play design is BETTER THAN LINEAR GOAL POINTS. We aren't rats in a maze and don't want to be treated that way. 2 . Throw away ALL the changes in T3 3. Rope arrows are good. (keep repeating that) 4. 1st person option is critical element for true immersion in Garret's role.
karras is sitting in a save chamber right? and his robots are not activated yet...i mean the gas? so where does this gas at 1:01 come from? and the gas at 1:25-1:28? and why is this robot at 1:50 broken? and what does that becon or however its written do?
What's wrong with this guy? He's not charismatic at all! His voice is ridiculus ! He sound like a powerless fanatic kicked out from a church, cursing anyone randomly.

Bruh this masterpiece has to be turned to a movie
Thief 1 and 2 are just masterpieces, also I love that face of Karras when he understands he is screwed
He truly left with a whimper lol
third one was good too. Just not as insanely good as 1 and 2 but far from being as bad as 2014 reboot
Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock. The holy trinity of gaming. All 3 franchises will comeback someday, I know it

Stephen Russell...Garret's voice is also...karras voice...

Mind blown

Something that i like about thief 2, is that Garret seems to see victoria as a friend.
some years later, and he voices another master thief in skyrim. namely mercer frey.
one of the most underrated games ever. I remember at 13, I could make levels for thief 2 using DromEd, it was just.. brilliant.
1:17 IDK about anyone else, but I love that dawning 'ohhhhhhh _fuck.'_ look on Karras' face when he realizes what's about to happen.
Yep. I wonder if in his final moments he considered that maybe activating his doomsday plan when he already knew Garrett was in the building and up to something, was perhaps a tiny, little, MASSIVE MISTAKE.
Just about when Garrett was about to get an answer, the clip ended. This all lead to the next game in the series, Thief: Deadly Shadows.
I agree. Just look at the amount of dialogue that he got in the last level. He reminded a bit of Dr. Breen from Half-Life 2 (One speech in particular was VERY similar) in term of omnipresence.

replying to 12 year old comment... but the simliarities with half life 2 is actually huge, I'm surprised it isn't mentioned more often.

One of the hardest Games , i‘ve ever played.
its hard to explain why i didnt like this ending but after seeing it i KNEW there was gonna be a 3rd game cause it cant end like that
@eatfirejones
I agree. Such fanaticism.
I didn't know about Benny, but yes, Russell is awesome:D

Those have to be human nervous systems hanging up at the start, right? Given Karras fashions servants out of existing humans and mechanical parts.
Holy shit that's disturbing... holy shit.

ahem you mean one, the reboot. deadly shadows was awesome. say what you want but it got me into the theif series.
Can someone explain this to me? It basically means that Garret legitimately wants to be a keeper right? And that the keepers can see the future?
The keepers don't see the future exactly, they have prophecies revealed to them by the glyphs, which seem to be some kind of revelatory magic possibly controlled by some sort of intelligence, but to my knowledge, that mystery is never revealed. he only co-operates with them.
If Karras had left well alone, Garrett would never have even been there. Karras sealed his own downfall in more ways than one :D
Thats all you got in the other ones.
@swedichboy1000 all text clearly say Karras
There is one singer with similar voice like Karrass's :)

I thinks its more like "stood the master builder" in the beginning, and "thyne endeavours be a blessing unto thee" in the end
this ending was rather disapointing
Me too. I wonder how the AdMech and the Mechanists would get along.
Probably pretty well.
HES NAME IS KARRES NOT KARRAS!!!
um, did they win?
the dark project ending was better.
