    Woww! Chevy Gasoline-powered truck chassis with an old rear-feed Garwood packer... Damn, that's ancient!

    A nice "show" to watch on a Sunday morning. Beautiful example of the 1965-1972 LP-700 series in 20-yard capacity. My compliments on your video documentation in showing the functions of this packer, especially the big 7" packer cylinders. The chain drive sweep blade limited this packers digestion, but anything you could get behind that packer blade was crushed but good! The fact that these digested smaller hopper loads (1 to 2 yards max) per cycle and had such a powerful packer blade made them a good performer.
    It looks like both of the arrester hooks are broken off of the sweep panel, which was common after years of regular use. These were supposed to lock the sweep panel at floor level, and you can see this one creeps a little as a result.
    Nice truck and packer combo, and a big thanks to the owner for giving you the demo. I have a Chevrolet ad circa 1968 showing almost this exact truck if anyone is interested.

      +ClassicRefuseTrucks where on the sweep panel would those hooks have been mounted? and by "floor level" do you mean when the blade is at its home position, or the halfway position when it's closest to the hopper sill? I'd be interested in knowing the purpose of those hooks as well. thanks for featuring this on CRT and showing us the 1968 ad there too. any pictures you want are all yours at www.flickr.com/photos/trashman242/albums/72157664391629815

      Scott......@ the 1:57 & 2:34 points, stop the video & you'll see welded tabs on the bottom side of the sweep panel close to the hopper wall. There were 2 spring loaded tapered pins (cut @ approx. 45 degrees) mounted on each side of the hopper wall that would compress in as the sweeper came close to the body floor, then pop-out and catch those welded tabs. It would prevent the sweeper panel from being forced down while the packer was compressing the load.

      +D Miller ...Warren, Scott...I stand corrected. This truck appears to have the correct blade stops intact. The older LP-600s had the larger hooks, this one should have flat stops, which it clearly does

    Been 1991-92 since I've worked on one of these. I remember the hopper being way faster and scarier. One of the most notorious hoppers when it comes to horror stories of missing fingers and limbs. Heil Collectomatics and Leach Packmasters sat in our old yard next to these. The Leaches were the best ones to work with.

      100% true. I worked with some these during High School Summers 79-82 in Northeast Ohio. The Garwood dual blade and Heil Lift Bucket were no match for the Leach Packmaster. The Leach Packmaster 2R was the Godzilla of our trucks and eventually all the units ended up being replaced with this model except for one old Packmaster from about 72. I agree about the Garwood, remember hating to have to work on it.

    I recall one like this when I was a child.. I was always fascinated by the rotating sweep panel. it went MUCH faster than this one did. This was in the mid-1970's or so. Also..a few years LATER..IO saw a PAK_MOR truck with this EXACT same mechanism...1981 or so.. I also had the engine speed up working..

    I've seen the pictures and now I've seen the video. Wow it's damn awesome that he got this thing running for you, too bad if you discovered this classic and the owner told you to piss off! haha Neat seeing the chains in operation, just like a gear system, top set runs quick off the motor and the lower set a little slower. Over 40 years old, it still exists AND it actually still works :S I could hear the creaking when it was packing and I think I heard him say it was pretty loaded, makes me wonder how old some of the rubbish is in the body! Who knows how many classics like this are sitting out the back of random properties doing whatever.

    Back in the 1980's my first trash truck was a 1974 Ford LN 700 with a Garwood LP-716. The truck was great for residential trash pickup,but eventually moved on to a Mack with a Pak-Mor I also had a Dempster Ranger on a IH CO 1950B

      No unfortunately in 1995 we were forced out as the local landfill closed and we were forced to haul about 50 miles further to a commercial landfill--so eventually couldn't compete with BFI and Waste Management so we sold out
      We were in business from 1970-1995

    I had a LP-716 worked the same way--broke the chain a few times-- by the time I was done with mine I had about 2 feet of masterlinks in the chain, but overall it was a good residential unit. Was on a Ford LN700 gas job. that was 25 years ago

    The ONLY issue I saw..was there was no "sped up" of the engine, when the packer was engaged. it should speed up considerably, as soon as the sweep panel begins to rotate. Probably a bad kick solenoid or linkage or something like that..

    Great find!! How'd you discover this old thing?? That's awesome that the owner was willing to fire it up for you. The gear shot was interesting, never seen that before and as a matter of fact, Thursday was the first time I discovered that you could open up that wall and see the mechanisms and gears of a RL lol What does this guy use this truck for? Truck looked like it was pretty full so I'm curious how often it's used. Awesome to see how the RL packer has developed from this into the modern day design. From the looks of it, seems like the modern day packer is just this design but put into one motion instead of two parts. That's really neat. Happen to know what became of Garwood over the years? Impressive truck to say the least, I'm curious how many trucks could survive this long if it weren't for air quality control and other regulations that were implemented over time... Nice work Scott!

      +WMmaster626 I was talking to a local business owner trying to gain permission to film one of his trucks. while he wasn't interested, he did know of this much older truck in town and pointed me in the right direction to see it. if you ever get a chance to open either side of a Heil 5000 rear loader, I encourage you to do that as the swing link system can be understood better that way. other makes like Leach have the hydraulics up above the blade, so not much to open and be revealed on the sides of those. heck, I think there's a picture of a Gar Wood's LP-900 or Heil 5000's side "workings" on CRT. and that's where I'd also direct you to go to learn what became of Gar Wood :) C'mon Aaron, you've been around us for awhile! you should know this...here, I'll get ya started: www.classicrefusetrucks.com/albums/GW/GW.html
      He uses this for miscellaneous trash that's generated on his property: large branches, bigger cardboard boxes, light construction debris, whatever he doesn't feel like putting out at the curb. thanks for your comment!

    Oh my God Scott, this truck is just amazing! A 1972 Chevy C60 Garwood rear loader ... wow! Just amazing that this old girl is still running! What do you mean when you say overboard? Does this truck have an automatic or manual transmission? What is the capacity of the body?

    • @ClassicRefuseTrucks
      @ClassicRefuseTrucks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GarbageSean Overbored; the engine block cylinders have been bored by a machine shop to an increased size. This is done during an engine rebuild to restore the surface of the bore and remove wear and damage. The result is an an engine displacement slightly larger than the original 396 cubic inches.

    • @Trashman242
      @Trashman242  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GarbageSean and the body capacity is 20 yards, just as a Gar Wood LP-716 would be 16 yard and LP-725 would be 25 cubic yards. and 6 speed auto trans.
      I should confirm that I was informed it ran on a 396. wikipedia says that by 1970 the 402 was introduced, and that was basically a 396 bored out to be 6 cubic inches larger. these were even labeled "396" ...so I assume when the owner says this is a 1972 and it runs a 396, he means it runs an overbored 396 (a.k.a. 402).

    Trashman,
    Thanks for sending the link for this video.
    She's well worn out....
    the engine speed-up circuit for the pack cycle isn't working,
    as these pack much faster than shown.
    This one is unusual in that it has the 'safety-Stop' feature, where the sweep blade would stop @ the hopper edge if the outside start lever wasn't held down to that point.
    Most haulers didn't order that on their packers back then.
    There are still a few of these in operation in the country.
    Below are 2 links to a dude that was selling his LP 700 in Texas back in 2010.

      +Trashman242 The LP-700had an optional "deadman control" cam wheel available as an option from the beginning, but most of the earlier models didn't seem to have them. This one obviously does. By the time of the LP-700-9, it may have become mandatory.
      By the 1980s, all refuse trucks were required to have the blade stop approximately 12" from the sill. This was a problem on the Heil 5000, since the sweep panel didn't open very high. At first, they tried a cumbersome interlock linkage (which most people disconnected), but Heil finally altered the sweep panel in 1986 for a higher lift. It solved the problem, and improved the packer by giving it a slightly bigger "bite".
