Dear Nana. basically I have done DevOps since the 80ties. It was not called DevOps. My lesson is that learning tools, high level, programming, etc is the "easy" part, but now, many years later, handling the constant changing organization, roles, skills levels by people, resource limits, dependencies, is the hard part.
Wow. Devops Engineer here. Was refusing to watch this video as i felt there wont be anything for me to gain here. Watched it and kinda surprised with everything you said. No one could have explained it better than you. Right to the point with details where needed.
Thanks Nana. As usual you can explain complex things in clear terms. From 6:48, she touches a very important point. It is "easy" to identify tools that can help and areas that takes time, but to change it, if not only depending on you, the hard work (communication) starts. Conflicting interesting, constant changes from management, vendors, other teams, is a big challenge.
I've enrolled in Nana's bootcamp, and it truly is excellent. She breaks everything down in detail, and explains complicated concepts in a concise manner that is easy to follow. The videos are visually stimulating and engaging, there are challenging exercises to make sure you understand the material (in the premium version), and projects to showcase your knowledge. I'm making steady progress through the exercises and have learned a lot, yet at the same time taking my time to make sure I really learn and internalize the material. Highly recommended!
As a DevOps specialist, this is a great video for people considering whether focusing on DevOps is the right path for them. It covers all the main attributes you need to do well. You certainly need more proactive drive and attention to high and low-level detail than your average developer or operations support person.
Very good video! I’m a RoR developer and I’m very happy specializing even more for the time being. I do enjoy creative solutions and teamwork, but using Ruby every day makes me really happy, I don’t know if spending time learning dozens of tools and integrating them together would feel as much fun to me even if I do enjoy efficiency in everything I do
I have been a lead mobile engineer for the last few years, getting bored with it. I want to thank you as you are helping me make a career shift. Love your work and your videos. Thanks again!
Hi Nana... You are one of best real DevOps professional and helpful for many of folks like me in influencing how to learn the technology and how to apply in real time.
Aaaand that's why for people with ADHD like me, it's the perfect job! You never get bored, you can use creativity and "out of the box" thinking (we don't even know where the box is XD ), and the pressure from EVERY OTHER TEAMS and manager, is a great way to actually get things done. Stressful? Yes. Satisfying? Yes. ADHD approved? YASSS
@Danandrea737 do you think it could be a good choice for people with ASD, too? I have ASD and find myself drawn to DevOps, but I'm not sure if it would actually be a good fit (can't trust my own brain, lol).
@JC-yb8hz YESS! in my previous job I had a colleague (devops as well) with ASD! I loved working with him, and his documentation were the best I ever saw ❤️ it can be hard for people with adhd or asd... but the way we see the world, gives an advantage in several situations, expecially on problem solving issues. Best of luck with you carrer!
Something that is missing: Always questioning yourself. Is something that should be present in every job, but if you are not able to do that in DevOps, you won't be able to earn trust in the organisation and you are going to fail.
Wow that was a mouthful! Nevertheless great explanation Nana.. you really are a diamond in DevOps world. This role is not easy, learning lots of tools can be overwhelming plus automation which consist of learning programming languages can be a head banging situation 😅 overall a great career and rewarding...
just learn basic python & JavaScript (goLang is good too, their docs are very straightforward & it's basically a modern C) also learning shell will be extremely beneficial (Win PowerShell or Linux Bash, most of the basic commands are the same) I'd recommend JavaScript over the rest as a starting point but everybody is different.
In many companies Devops is divided between devs and ops . An ops is responsible for the availability of machines and infrastructure, and devs are responsible for deployment scripts and ci/cd pipelines
I like learning about 80% of a subject and then moving on to the next. I find I can learn things to a good level before I get bored of it. This might be for me
Hello Nana , I follow your videos mostly and are very helpful in my learning! this one is also one of the best and motivating to be a devops engineer. I think you should also consider my request to clarify how devops engineer and devops architect and cloud architect are different or related. I hope to see ones of that type. Thanks for the video.
Hi Nana, In India, most of the companies are having support and infra kind of role in Devops which many are not liking it at all as it is a 24/7 role. Would like to know on particular roles of Devops people would be more interested to work upon rather than troubleshooting issues when application is down.
Aahhh now that I watched this, I definitely know devops is not for me, even though I love learning new technologies. It's just.. too big for me but also soooo interesting. But too big for me....again😂
im definitely a generalist. I know hardware really well, that led me to system administration, virtualization/physical servers/different operating system and how to administer. Then the virtualization led me to more advanced networking need and worked on some cisco certifications and worked as network plus system admin. then i learned ansible and it helped me automate stuff with routers and with patches. Then i got into docker as the was a need to reduce costs and make servers faster. then there was a need to monitor everything so i installed my First ELK Stack for monitoring. In the middle i found and cyberSecurity and did a CEH and got a master degree as well. And then i found out Dev Ops and im working into it as the next path as i have great communication skills due to my past work in sales. Should i continue with this? What do you say?
Thanks Nana for the great video. I am looking into pitch in DevOps area. As you were saying we should explore many tools but not specialized on one. If one is not expert in that specific tool how they can optimize and innovate? Knowing many toil is good to have exposure but master of none is danger. Every month some DevOps tools are releasing not sure having learning that many tools which does more or less same job helps. Please let me know your thoughts.
HI Nana I have more than 15 years of support experience and hold two AWS Certifications namely CCP and SAA02. I also have learnt some Terraform. I am trying to become a solution architect and eventually move into Devops. After watching your video, I have all the attributes to become a devops engineer. Can you please suggest some courses. Thanks
considering starting as a devops after graduation. What I'm afraid is this trend wouldn't last long, and after all the demand has been filled, it will be looking bad. Anyone faced same situation? Is it easy to switch back to dev from devops?
I loved ❤️ this video Nana and it increases my motivation. I'm excited to start soon my next experience as a DevOps Engineer. What I think can be added to the video is the connection of DevOps with Agile world. What do you think?
I love devops! I personally find devops to be more technical oriented vs being a developer.... as a developer you need to know exactly how the clients apps work and the UX of it all.... but with devops you just need to understand the overall structure and demands of the teams and deployments.

Hi nana, I have been following you, your videos are amazing as always. But you are not uploading frequently. But i have doubt and i hope you will clarify it. Which one is better in future according to you. Please clairfy my doubt. Thank you.

What future roles a Sr. DevOps Engineer can take?
Do you think a career in DevOps can offer the same stability as in a more “traditional” roles such as software engineering?
