Looking to buy one of these. So is it best to prune winter only if you want the tree to maximise its growth and then prune mid season if you dont want any more/wana keep it in its shape it was currently in?
Exactly - you can pretty much freeze it in time with a pruning mid season. This could be exactly what you want to get a perfect fall look, which is where this tree REALLY shines.
I've thought about this a bit and I think the answer is yes - I may not change the leaning tilt much, but I would definitely align it better side-to-side since it looks a little cock-eyed in the oval pot.
Just to let you know. Traditional bonsai esthetic allows no more than two branches from the same spot. This relates to trunk too: no more than one branch coming from the same spot on trunk. Ignoring this rule can lead to reverse taper; and even if it doesn't, it's not very pleasing. Another traditional rule: straight trunk and branches are boring. They are dealt away with in two ways: by cutting off the straight part wherever branches fork, or by wiring branches and bending them. Exceptions are formal style and broom style to some degree.
Thank you - there are indeed a lot of rules to bonsai that people have adopted over time. I am not an expert - but I think bonsai is also a free form art where the tree is your canvas and the clippers are your brush and you get to make the calls about esthetics. I could lop it off at the first branched and then grow out from there, but I am taking a slightly different approach to get there: keep it looking like a miniature tree form and gradually working it into what I want over time. While it is still developing, it wouldn't hold up to close up scrutiny by traditional bonsai esthetics, but it look pretty in my yard and makes me happy :)

When you repot next spring will you be changing the planting angle?
I am not sure yet, but I kind of like the informal tilt it has now.
