  • Back to April 1992 and to Welwyn Garden City. Due to some engineering works further north Res parcels trains needed to run round in what was left of Welwyn Garden City Yard. A BR blue class 31 & Parcel livery 47 arrive to run round their parcels train and depart, finishing with an Inter-City class 47 hauled charter train passing by. My pleasure....normally the only traffic this yard saw was the odd tamper or engineerrs train. A friend found out parcels trains were going to be here for a week so had me come along and get it on film......something different as well......

    Such an interesting aspect of railway operations, the humble parcels train. It’s a pity there’s no real comprehensive publication on the history, operations and logistics of the Parcels sector network.

      I agree, as well as the long lost newspapers operations

      Yes, it was posssible to see the parcels operations at work at most central London stations until the Railnet opened over at Stonebridge Park.

      Key world pulishing have just done a bookazine on parcels vehicles. It details the vehicles used from nationalisation up to the end of railnet. However, it doesn't include formations. It costs £8.99 from their website.

    A really good video,very interesting.
    The surprise was the 1938 stock obviously not at WGC.
    However up to 1975 they did go on ECML metal between Drayton Park and down the drain at York Road pulled by LT battery locos as the old Northern City line was totally isolated from the LT nerwork

      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The last 20 seconds of the 38 is the (de)parting shot to upload the end cards over without ruining the end of the film.....I have seen cine film of the 38 stock moves along the Northern Heights line in times past.

    Flipping marvellous again, that shunter was a bit of a legend in his bright white trainers! Is Welwyn Garden City on the ECML or MML? Many thanks as always for the upload. 👍🏻

    Wow! Great vid!
    I go to Welwyn almost on a weekly basis for the shopping and in most ways it looks the same, but seems at the time of your video some older sidings had just been removed from around the Shredded Wheat factory. There's a bit of concrete road crossing at the end of the footbridge where the track is still in situ.
    And the two ballast wagons that were seen in the right side of those parcels train shots were still there until only a few years ago.

      The yard hadn't had much use for years and rationalisation had already taken place. It's main use was for engineering trains, to either run round or stable ballast trains/tampers ect there ready for a T3 possession.

      It was a pre war new town back in the day. The original old world village just called Welwyn still exist's further north, the station that served it now called Welwyn North.
