Story 1: I find it hard to empathize with the wife. Sure, she was trying to escape from terrible circunstances, but that doesn't mean she isn't an horrible person for what she did, specially because she was friends with OP before the marriage and, according to his own words, he would had helped her back then if she asked. But instead of asking for help she choose the selfish path to escape. Being horrible to other people to escape an horrible situation is not ok, it just make you as terrible as the people you are trying to escape from.

But in the past gay people, whether they were man or woman, use to marry the sex they weren’t attracted to all the time purely bc it was the safest option, they’d go as far as having kids, this went for whether the partner knew they were gay, they didn’t know at all, or it was a gay man and a gay woman, and they would usually go to the grave with this information; and in some countries it’s still very much like that, although I think the media helped a bit by seeping in some support groups and awareness that being gay isn’t completely taboo in some places now. However in some places, even if there are accepting and helpful people (like OP would’ve been if his wife hadn’t led him on for 7 years and just asked for help since the beginning), there are still hardcore religious/traditional people who believe it’s a sin and who knows what they’d do if someone in their family winded up being gay? Point is, the answer to your question is fear. OP said he and his wife live in a very religious area, and considering he said english wasn’t his first language I doubt this is the US so for all we know, she could’ve been ostracized or even killed. Does that excuse the heartbreak and pain OP went through? Absolutely not, but it hopefully puts a reasoning behind her actions as to why. It's such big country and even though you live in a small town you can leave you're family for good and make you're own life and live with someone you love. I'm from India it's not illegal anymore but we have no damn rights and still there are parts of places where they have never heard about such things. Honour killing is still okay in such parts and if you don't fit in such things then I don't think people need to stuck in these areas at all. They have to leave as soon as possible instead of hoping for some miracle and wasting other people time for decades and then leave them just like that. She learned it wasn't safe to be herself, and she's dealing with a lot of trauma for simply being who she is. If she was beaten for loving a woman, and her parents then told her to marry a man to "heal" her homosexuality, I don't doubt that if she tried leaving on her own accord, she wouldn't be beaten again. Of course OP has every right to be hurt, but trauma can do insane things to people. I hope they both are able to move on and live happily one day.
