Late Gen X, grew up in a very inner-city urban environment, went to HS and college in the 90s. NOBODY called it "bustin' a sag." Things from this list that were way more 80s than 90s: Jelly shoes, rolling up one pant leg, snap bracelets. "One-strapping" a backpack has absolutely nothing to do with fashion or trends and everything to do with it's just easier to drop your bag when you get to the classroom. And wearing a shirt tied around your waist has been done by everyone for decades. Jesus H Christ, do you ever have people who were actually THERE make these lists?
7:31 My cousin's wife wore Doc Martens with her wedding dress! And now the oldest daughter (my 2nd cousin) carried on that tradition by wearing Doc Martens with her wedding dress!
Hahaha the photo of the kids in black band tshirts, baggy jeans and wallet chains might as well have been lifted right out of my photo album. I rocked ALL of that including the gelled up spikey hair. Thank god there wasn't Facebook and digital cameras back in the late 90s....
2 of my favorite 90's trends were not hating each other based on political leanings and being able to have intelligent discourse on controversial topics
The 90s was the best decade. No Internet. No social media. We were outside all the time. Parents used to think their children would turn out weird if they stayed inside all day. The music was amazing across all genres
Just so y'all know, that what ever it's called "saggin or bagging", it didn't pop up out of nowhere. It was started in jail. It was a sigh that other prisoners (men) that you are" available" and the simple ones that don't know that just kinda picked it up as " just hip-hop fashion" look it up it's not just me saying it.
The wallet chain wasn’t spawned just from the mosh pit. As a skater, we also wore them so we wouldn’t lose our wallets. Pretty much every X sports kid did. It also applies to bikers so they don’t lose their wallets. Granted, bikers tend to not have a wallet, but more of a chained billfold.
No, they're about the reason for the trend. Not the reason why it was invented. Come on man. The punk scene sparked the trend. Motorcycle riders did it for practical reasons but never at any point in time did they start the trend in the 90s.
I was there in the 90s, and in my region, we called it "kickin the droop." And yes, at the time, not made up later. Being that regional things are incredibly common, and diverse, I absolutely believe it was called "bustin a sag" somewhere.
I was waiting for the Kris Kross look to be on here lol. Also, it's no surprise that hip-hop culture influenced several of these. When I think of that overalls looks, I think of Bell Biv Devoe.
For the Jelly shoes, in France back in the 90's (and before) we wore those to go to the beach. Since there are a lot of sharp shellfish, or you could get stung by some fish you had to wear those to protect your feet
Does anyone remember the trend post one-strapping, where you would two strap your backpack (had to be Eastpak) but it had to be as loose as possible so it was like you were wearing a WWII era parachute on your arse? No? Just me?
People still sag today and it's so gross. They just wake up , put their clothes on, look in the mirror & do a fit check and are like "........................... yeah, this looks good".
It's helps a LOT. My husband has one because we have a motorcycle and he works in a warehouse. It also keeps track of which pocket your wallet is in. 🤣Too many boxy things like phones and stuff in the pockets anymore.
0:29 I grew up in the 90s and saw guys do that all the time…BUT was today years old when I heard the term “busting a sag”! And lived in US and never saw Jelly shoes after the 80s.
the jelly shoes in France were only meant to be worn at the beach to avoid hurting your feet on rocks or pebbles. They were not something you wear on everyday life (except for very young children ) and they were not considerd stylish..;We call them "méduses" , that means "Jellyfish"
Doc Martens sadly aren't made nearly as well as they used to be. Used to have a lifetime warranty. Company got sold off in 2013, and the lifetime warranty stopped three years later. My last pair started to separate and peel apart after a couple years. The stitching is a joke now. RIP
20:34 Joey Lawrence!!!! He was in the show "Blossom" with his catch phrase "Whoa!" 😂 at the end of an episode, they showed his video to one of his songs. I think that picture is from a video or from the opening credits for "Blossom". Did anybody get his album? I had the cassette.. he wasn't a bad singer. Just sayin'...
One of my Sociology professors told us that the sagging pants originated in prisons, when the men that were "available" would show it by sagging their pants (which makes sense, since they are almost offering up the behind). Not 100% sure if it is true, but it is still something I would want to be told to EVERY SINGLE GUY, maybe the ugly trend would disappear.
There are so many jails that would have their own reasons for this but according to my dad who was in/out of jail a lot in CA it was actually because they gave him more underwear per week than pants so it was better to sit and let the underwear get dirty vs the pants bc he could change them more frequently.
Snap bands were more 80s in the PacNW. 90s grunge/BDSM/hippie/stoner culture and their clashing brought in/brought back everything from tie-dye and bellbottoms (which led to JNCO) to chokers to pleather and latex clothing as daywear to DIY braided friendship bracelets, and people wore dozens of them at the same time, or weave them into their hair. it was a weird time, but also a lot of fun. Oh, there were also a trend of plain cropped tees with contrasting trims. meanwhile for guys, mechanic shirts/work shirts weren't popular up north until after Green Day's first album Dookie. Also, one section of women's summerwear are extremely short hot pants that have to show the bottom of butt cheeks, and also long skinny jeans with micro tube tops, but otherwise, bellybuttons must always be showing. It also started in the 80s but by around 92 it was all over the place.
I remember when Docs didn’t have zippers. The saggy pants made my mum want to go pull them down the rest of the way. I did the one shoulder backpack thing in high school in the 80’s.
Those jelly shoes have existed way longer the 90s. I was born in 1972 (in Belgium) and when I was a kid jelly shoes were a thing for kids to protect their feet from the warm sand, or if you went swimming in rivers or lakes you wore jelly shoes so you wouldn't hurt your feet on rocks.
2:05 "When were you born?"
"2008"
"*sob"😰That sob is hilarious! 'Love her.
I feel her
Izzy's reaction when Juliana said she was born in 2008. I feel ya girl. I feel OLD watching some of these kids on here.
Yeah, on one of the Teens React videos there was a kid who said he was born in 2011 😳
I love how React is slowly turning into a gotcha game of "Can You Recognize Young Joe Bereta?"
I'm gen X and was a teen through the 90s and never once heard anyone ever say "bustin' a sag" until today. We said "saggin' n baggin'".
GEN X rulezzz
Same, we never used "bustin a sag" that's just weird. It was just saggin.
We would say it ironically to make fun of the kids who wore pants like that
remember the JNCO's and long tee shirts
Saggin'...that's it.
Izzy's reaction to Juliana's birth year had me rolling.
Izzy’s shiver when Juliana said she was born in 2008 so relatable 🤣 girl I was in 9th grade then 😭
I nearly choked on my pizza when Juliana yelled out, "I'm fifteen!" 🤣🤣🤣
Also, as a guy who grew up during the 90s, I agree with her sentiment!
Nobody called it “busting a sag.”
i dont even thing we had a name for it
It was just called sagging lol
Facts
Pull up the pants!!!!
Agreed!!
Late Gen X, grew up in a very inner-city urban environment, went to HS and college in the 90s. NOBODY called it "bustin' a sag." And wearing a shirt tied around your waist has been done by everyone for decades. Jesus H Christ, do you ever have people who were actually THERE make these lists?
I am with you 100% on the backpack, I did it in high school and I still (at 43) do it today. So much easier to slide off.
No one ever said “bustin a sag” in the 90’s. “He’s saggin” “The kids out there saggin and baggin”.
Right. If you said bustin' a sag, well honestly chances are you got called a cancellable word that rhymes with 'sag'. Just saying.
I was a teen in the 90s and I've never in my life heard "busting a sag"! 😂 WTF! Who's been lying to you all?
Same
These are all LA people. They live in an exclusive bubble. Even got the time for jelly shoes wrong. I knew people in the 80s that used them.
You finally got Izzy to stop cussing by pairing her with Juliana 😂😂
I thought the same thing. Good on Izzy.
I think she didn't wanna be a bad example for Juliana...
The way that Jules kept making Izzy feel old was hilarious to me 😂😂😂
7:31 My cousin's wife wore Doc Martens with her wedding dress! And now the oldest daughter (my 2nd cousin) carried on that tradition by wearing Doc Martens with her wedding dress!
Juliana understanding why Izzy I can't wear slip dress was priceless.
Izzy's uncomfortable laugh/sigh/whatever at hearing Juliana being born in 2008 🤣
The Sag started as a prison thing. It was to "advertise" that the wearer was "open for business".
Hahaha the photo of the kids in black band tshirts, baggy jeans and wallet chains might as well have been lifted right out of my photo album. I rocked ALL of that including the gelled up spikey hair. Thank god there wasn't Facebook and digital cameras back in the late 90s....
amen to that
Not once in my forty years of life have I ever heard anyone refer to sagging your pants as "Busting a sag".
I heard it all the time growing up in SoCal.
Nor have I.
@@shadowkissed2370 I guess the term didn't make its way all the way up the East Coast. (I grew up in New England)
Facts. Who tf talks like that
@@zephyram2648 I lived in New Hampshire for a few years and I don't think I ever heard it there.
Let's go Izzy! Team Comfort Fashion!
I'm 46. My style was slip dresses, Docs, and a flannel tied around the waist. I'd still wear it today if i was thinner.
I would have liked for them to have mentioned the Scrunchie. Whether it was holding up a girl’s pony tail or being stored on her wrist - CUTE!
I love how disappointed Brian is about the saggy pants still being a thing...
"I don't need to see your butts. I'M FIFTEEN!!" Girllll, I FELT that 😂
We called them babydoll dresses in the 90’s. Y’all need to get older millennial producers. “Busting a sag” was also wildly inaccurate.
Or we were at the mall.
I was born in 81- I've lived through all these trends...never did we call it busting a sag lol.
They did all the time in SoCal.
'79- We're laughing about that Boys and call it 'you're losing your pants'
"In 1945 Doctor Klaus Martens was a soldier..." I think there's a bit more to this that's not being mentioned.
Just so y'all know, that what ever it's called "saggin or bagging", it didn't pop up out of nowhere. It was started in jail. Bowlcut: Lucas: "Hell NO!"
*sideeye from Brian, because Lucas HAS a bowlcut, only curly*
I didn't think about that, but you're completely right about Lucas' hair! 🤣
I literally wore a flannel around my waist yesterday and I just bought my first pair of docs a month ago.
same here still wear a wallet chain, still wear Docs, still got the flannel
The punk scene was not the reason for a chain wallet. It’s motorcycle riders so they don’t lose it while they’re riding.
No, they're about the reason for the trend. Not the reason why it was invented. Come on man. The punk scene sparked the trend. Motorcycle riders did it for practical reasons but never at any point in time did they start the trend in the 90s.
I’m a xennial. I was a teen for half of the 90’s. No one ever called it “busting a sag”. Gen Z please stop.
Lol good edit with Brian calling girls a freak with chokers and then all the girls love them 😂
I live in the PNW and the flannel around the waist has never gone out of style. We still rep the grunge era around here. 😺
If you don't own a flannel or wear shorts and a sweater/sweatshirt. Are you even from here? 🤣🤣
I guarantee you nobody in the 90s called it "busting a sag." People made this shit up in the late 2000's. It's a myth.
I was there in the 90s, and in my region, we called it "kickin the droop." And yes, at the time, not made up later. Being that regional things are incredibly common, and diverse, I absolutely believe it was called "bustin a sag" somewhere.
Chain wallets were not started in punk, they were started by outlaw bikers in the 50s and are still worn today.
Would you wear one now?
Izzy: No...
Juliana: Yeah.
Izzy: Oh...
Juliana You... don't have to.
🤣
Man the 90s were so much fun
one strap backpack, teen, adults, still do this, i see it everyday
Yeah Izzy can't wear a slip dress because of the "donkey congas"...LOL
"seem 90's was about rebelion"
yess it was... yes it was... (sad nostslgic emoji)

I remember that even here in uk we did that
The slap bracelet and jelly shoes were from the 80’s
Never once in my life said "busting a sag".
When Kat said they know the bowl cut hair kid, I paused the video, covered up the hair, and after a short bit I said, "Is that Joe?" That's amazing! 🤣
I still wear 90 percent of these styles 😂😂😂
Bustin a sag? Two strapping? I’m a 90’s chick and I’ve never heard these terms until today and I was deeply involved in fashion and pop culture.
omg Joe! I can't believe that was you!! I also was a wallet chain girl, I thought I was sooooooOOOOOoo PUNK lol
Jelly shoes were definitely in the US & Canada in the '80s. I wore them in high school.
I remember the girls wearing jellies when I was a kid in the 80s
Not so much in the 90s

The chokers are cute on girls and the flannel around the waist is both practical and aesthetic.
