The Industrial Revolution: The Birth of the Modern World

- The years of the Industrial Revolution are not clearly defined, but the period spanned both the American and French Revolutions, the expansion of empires into the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and the opening of the American West. It began in the 1700s with a shift in one of humanity’s oldest necessities, the need to make cloth to protect their bodies from the elements. The textile industry was the first to be mechanized, to create modern manufacturing and shipping methods, even the first to adopt supply-side engineering, though it wasn’t yet called that. Here is the story of the Industrial Revolution, described by some historians as “…the process of change from an agrarian and handicraft economy to one dominated by industry and machine manufacturing”.

I remember my high school teacher describing the industrial revolution as "a great time to be alive or the worst time to be alive depending on who you were"
Love your style and narration karl! Very immersive! Suggestion karl: Henry III. Englands most underrated king
I love how he goes back to his roots and drops random facts.
Trains hitting 25mph,more as it’s known to users of Northern trains. Ambition.
Okay Simon isnt coming back and he didnt sell the channel.
He never owned the channel. .
Karl is the host for now.
Dont hate in Karl, it's not his fault. He doesn't own the channel. So be nice.
Look in the community posts on here or top tens and theres a video called "its all my fault" explaining what happened with Simon.
Stay Cool 😎
i don't "hate" Karl personally; I hate mumblers, so that hate is applied due to the transitive property. A mumbler who cannot annunciate clearly makes a terrible narrator. Speaking clearly is just one more thing that does not seem to matter anymore... It's gone the way of the hyphen and the Oxford comma.
@@cynic1864ableHe doesn't mumble. You just lack the ability to comprehend his accent.
He DOES mumble and does not enunciate. That coupled with his accent makes him impossible to understand
@@christinebenson518 Next time I think I am listening to a mumbler, I will have to ask myself, "maybe, I just don't 'comprehend' his accent?" Being that Karl's is not that strong, at least to me, I don't think that's it. The mumbling just lazy, especially when one is the narrator. Like not dragging one's feet, speaking clearly should be something everyone tries... but effort is tough for most folks. However, the effort you have shown in determining how my mind works, & what it can comprehend, is impressive, and I do appreciate you putting more effort into clear communication than Karl.
@@jenniferstump3783he doesn't. He is speaking in a way that pronounces his words more, and hides most of his accent. Not being able to understand doesn't mean he mumbles
Your pauses to take a sip of your drink, especially holding it that way are like perfect for comedic delivery. Great job again!
❤agreed
And then he goes and spills the tea.
its funny because for me everytime the background music stopped playing and he began his 'me me me' rant i right arrow clicked

Did you know the Liverpool vs Manchester rivalry started because Liverpool increased import charges as they were against the slavery in production of cotton. Manchester then built the Manchester shipping canal to circumvent Liverpool.
I feel like I’m supposed to ask, “where is Simon?” 😂
Danny escaped and locked him in the basement. We are planning a rescue now. Shh
"Where is Simon? Is he safe? Is he... alright?"
It was only a dream
Where is Simon? I want to know myself
@@kayloradoon farm with all the other aging presenters.

No longer interim host! YAY! Also hello again, heirloom frying pan.
The Industrial Revolution and its consequences on…..
I was originally resistant to a new host, but Karl has grown on me. I hope he stays and is promoted from interm host!
it's consequences have been a disaster on the human race
That was very interesting. Karl, I enjoyed how you sipped your tea during some of the humorous parts of the video. 😄
I was expecting Simon. Pleasantly surprised by Karl.
LOVE the pause and drink for the blazing 25MPH warning for women. 🤣 Thank you Karl! I needed that.
I'm really warming up to Karl as he settles in to the channel and would probably enjoy him as a long term host.
If you're happy with Karl as host, share the new videos around as much as possible. We were gone for several months, so we're not in the algorithm's good graces yet. ;)
agreed, i like him.
He has grown on me. I disliked him always joking but he’s learned that comedy is okay with less serious topics.
You are an excellent host.
Oh my god it's Karl!!! I didn't expect to see you in class
Why do You talk so fast???? Great source of knowledge and information. Thank You
Wont be able to watch football now without thinking Cottonopolis United or Cottonopolis City?
The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race
I think you're referring to Hero of Alexandria who developed a spinning wheel which was powered by steam, but I don't think it was of much practical use, but considering it was 2000 years ago was pretty ahead of it's time!!! Think you're a great presenter btw and keep meaning to look up your own channel.
OMG that was so freaking funny! Traveling at high speeds (25 mph) could make a womans uterus fall out. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wild, right?
It's good to see Karl getting into his groove and I dig the bonus facts that he added here!
Was expecting to see Simon but was absolutely delighted when I saw Karl ❤
Ah yes, the Industrial Revolution. An era with
🎵Many different types of machines and factories with machines in them, so they could make a lot of products real fast🎵
*The guy living in a Narrow boat with the big TV watching this* "He's talking about me" 😅
Fun fact: Coal gas is produced while coking, and before long, it was being gathered and used to provide light in houses, via gas lamps. This gas is also why "Natural Gas" is called what it is, because Coal gas was artificially occurring.
SOS isn’t an acronym or a backronym, it’s an initialism. Come on Karl, you’re a writer for god's sake.
He was referring to Save Our Souls, not SOS 😊
@@sandybarnes887 From one Sandy to another, that’s not an acronym either, it too is an initialism. An acronym is a word formed by the initial letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term, such as NASA or Radar, an initialism is when the initial letters do not form a word like FBI, CIA, or SOS, just saying.
This isn't Simon's channel "what I learned today". Why am I learning things in the comments section.
I was just about to leave a comment on AI when you brought it up yourself. The script of the video was good at predicting the thoughts of the audience.
Almost as if it was written by....
Agreed. Great unscripted comment.
Britain from 1800 to 1900.
20,000 Waterwheels decreased in number.
Windmills decreased in number.
Englishman Thomas Newcomen's 1,500 Atmospheric Pumps disappeared.
Scotsman James Watt's 500 Steam Engines and their descendants increased in number to 10,000,000 !!!
For every SINGLE Waterwheel in 1800 there were now 500 Steam Engines in 1900 !!!
That's an increase in Power Capacity and therefore Productive Capacity for the whole country of 500 times in the space of one human's lifetime.
This WAS the Industrial Revolution and it was all due to only ONE SINGLE Invention, James Watt's Invention of the world's first PRACTICAL Steam Powered Engine.
Take away James Watt's Steam Power and Engines, you get no Industrial Revolution!
The Industrial Revolution was the birth of a new and better engine, the Steam Engine, after 3 or more thousand years of Waterwheel Power.
That was a great little documentary of industry. I hope you make a part two three and four 👍
25:07 Karl ‘It is only the existence of child labor laws that prevents corporations from abusing children.’
McDonalds ‘ Hold my Big Mac, now watch this.’
English people back in the day "oh we don't have nails, better burn down a house"... Americans "welp we don't have bullets... Better melt idk our forks"
I would like to make a statement about Karl referring to donkeys as "stupid animals". Donkeys tend to be smarter than horses. They got a reputation for being dumb because they were outsmarting the people working with them.
You just about lost me at 22 mins. Then I got mildly interested. Then you lost me again. Oh , wel. Thanks team, at least for trying
This video explains why I say so often on these videos, that everywhere that the British has been, they are better off than they were before the British arrived. God save the Queen! The Victorian era was one of the greatest errors in human history, and this, from an American
Oh man, this is cool. We get a new fact boi!
*Ahem* He shall be known as the Fact Goblin.
That blazer looks great karl!🎉🎉🎉 Your style rocks!
Where are the Luddites these days ? " What say, Silas ? , shall we go to town today to wreck machines ? "
He makes a video of Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister of Italy
This guy needs to learn how to pronounce "industrial" correctly.
I thought the history of S.O.S. was interesting. I didn't know it.
The guy/gal who made that frying pan would dissagree. . .
This video deserves a sequel. I want to know how industrialization impacted armament and weapon productions, tools for warfare.
Still loving the channel. Any chance of doing a video on Jim Henson, C.S Lewis or Mother Teresa? Think they would be interesting to know about them. Cheers
All of those are great ideas. I'll check to see if they've been pitched yet. :)
If you drive certain fords or bmws i made parts for them
Thought this was a biographic show not a geographic show
Simon’s back with another historical gem. Ah Wait a Minute…
i hope u finally get accepted to EU.
25:27 reminds me of my first day in Business Associations back in Law School. The professor asked us to come up with the first three words that pop into our minds when we hear the word “corporation”. None of my words were legally relevant but she loved my third word which was “amorality”. Again not legally relevant but a good idea to keep in mind if you ever find yourself in a position to influence public policy.
And just in case anyone is thinking of crying out “socialist” or “communist”, please note the word I used was “amorality” not “immorality”. My word choice was deliberate.
Thanks for the video 👍🏻
👋
Hey, if Simon is gonna have a co-host, Karl is a solid pick up.
Not a co host but replacement
@@jrmckim still solid.

Sending out an OSO. Sending out an OSO.
Can you do a video on Edwin Edwards (the 50th Governor of Louisiana), Lester Maddox (75th Governor of Georgia) and or George Wallace (45th Governor of Alabama)?
He law against child labor does not prevent exploitation of children in the workforce, it only assigns punishment. The morality of the corporate heads prevents the exploitation of children.
Excellent documentary! My homeschooled teens appreciated just the right amount of sarcasm and salty language....a perfect attention-keeper!
17:06 Wait, to this day? I thought from seeing the original Full Monty that they were basically done by or before the 1990's? What made Sheffield steel so good anyway?
"If you go back to 1800, everybody was poor. I mean everybody. The Industrial Revolution kicked in, and a lot of countries benefited, but by no means everyone." -- Bill Gates
A (joking) backronym for SOS in German is "Seeman ohne Schiff" = seaman without ship.
Where Simon at..
What many don't understand, is that manufactured goods are far cheaper (Not necessarily better) than handmade. True most of the laborers were underpaid, but that's been addressed with minimum wage laws. A pack of 10 pencils can be bought for 50 cents. A hand made pencil would be several dollars at least.
The Industrial Revolution to me is just like a story I know called 'The Puppy Who Lost His Way.'
Karl jumpscare lol
One cirtic on your presentation, try to move the teleprompter so your looking at the camera not to the side of it. Other than that loved this!
Another weird thing you've covered in Biographics was that train heist in the UK. This at the very least affected people that you've made Biographics videos on people that you will make videos on in the future.
Steel is not a metal, it's an alloy of iron and carbon.
As for the prosperity of the people...it went to the people at the top. The workers were being exploited like never before.
I don't know why you're complaining, that has always been the case.
Thanks.
I would strongly argue that the lathe was the tool that started the Industrial Revolution
Well this is incredibly fascinating.
No way.
I watched this sitting on a canal, and having a smoke
Ai is just the exact same evolution as cotton machines.
You are just a (bad) English reading agent that does not add much
No. No it's not. The Cotton machines were a tool for workers to use, LLMS are replacements for workers. Try again.
Currently watching this on my canal boat lol
14:43 - wait, what happened in 1913? I know in *1813* the first commercially viable steam locomotive "Puffing Billy" on the Wylam Colliery Railway.
The Ticknall Tramway became largely disused by 1913 and the last revenue-earning journey was on 20th May in that year. However, a single wagon was run empty in a return trip once every six months in order to keep the route viable. Ultimately, it was finally abandoned in September 1915 when the local industries fell into disuse, partly because the quarries were becoming worked out and the constraints of the First World War had curtailed much of the local trade. Additionally, the prevailing necessities of war and the need for scrap metal demanded the removal of the redundant rails for melting down.
@@sandybarnes887 No kidding! Thanks for clearing up, what I otherwise thought was a crack in the narrative!
George c marshal biography please
I think you’re going to keep losing your American audience until you replace this man. He doesn’t enunciate, speaks too quickly for the way he mumbles his words together, and has an accent that’s difficult to understand.
Still? He's improved considerably. We have no trouble understanding him...
I can understand him but he does slur a bit

Simon???
15:50 That would be about as easy as telling a woman: "You CAN get your children vaccinated, it's necessary and completly safe"
The industrial revolution was the biggest destructive catastrophe that has ever happened to the human race and the world itself.
