Another great "Hands-on" Video/audio service call. Must take patience to deal with positioning the camera every minute. Grew up with steam heat until the age of 20. Now for 25 years have hot water heat. Had forced air for 20 years, but I prefer the hot water!!
I don't know why, they give the best heat. They're more efficient from what I learned, and NO DESERT DRY AIR like forced air furnaces. I lived in many houses/apts that had either forced air or water/steam boilers. I lived in NYC, they're everywhere, I NEVER had that dryness. I own 2 apt. houses in Buffalo NY now, I have forced air furnaces in the both of My 2 unit houses. One of them is very old & it's for My apt, she's still running strong, it must have been installed in the 1930's. It has a built-in humidifier, looks like it doesn't work nor can be repaired. I plan on putting a steam boiler system the houses in the not too distant future before steam boilers go extinct. I know it will be expen$ive.
Had the opposite problem with an MM low water cutoff this passed week. We installed a brand new 24v MM water feeder (system was previously manual feed only) and the LWCO would not send 24 volts to the feeder. I decided to “cheat” and replaced only the board of the LWCO instead of removing the whole housing like you did. I also didn’t have to take the electrical connectors off. Nice work!!!
Good jobSteve,as always.keep the tapes coming, they are great and very good.cutting that glass tube, was very nice and clean.replacement of 15 lbs. pressure relief valve, was a good job also. you have to give it the old gundy treatment MAMA!!!!! take it to the next level. what would the BABY DOG DO!!!!!!!DON'T FORGET SHE IS hvac MECHANIC TOO!!!!! gundy!!!!!!
Changed a few of those MM low water cutout controls in my day. Glad you mentioned using limited pipe dope as these controls use the threads for boiler water conductivity. Nice job!!
Nice job! I didn't know you could make a replacement sight glass like that. I figured you just ordered them from a supplier, that was awesome! You really have a knack for diagnosing all the problems and fixing them right up for your customers. I guess that's what seasoned pros do ; ) I really enjoy watching your videos and hope you have a Merry Christmas Steve.
Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hoping you could put out a video explaining the pressure controls and maybe going over the difference between one pipe and two pipe systems.
Was that controller from the late 90's early 2000's? I would have checked the capacitors with my esr meter. The top one looks bulged like from "the great capacitor plague" of the 90's. Then approach the customer with repair, a good guarantee, and both happier. He with paying less than entire new controller, and you making more than the part markup. More steam, especially why vents need attention for best performance, how the air release and condensation works in single pipe system, minimum pipe diameter, etc.
You got a big truck and I am sure you got a great idea of what to carry onboard, Do you have to go chase parts often or do you have it nearly perfected ?? Great video to learn from, thank you for sharing your knowledge to help others less experienced.
Finally, a real service tech. that is producing a real video on a real piece of equipment. Not just to hear himself talk. Excellent job!!! I have been in the service industry for over forty years, occasionally I will watch youtube and see how other people are doing things. Usually it is just some moron acting like a fool trying to impress someone. You were right on the money! Excellent video. I look forward to seeing more. By the way, did you ever call Felix back???
this was really cool to watch you working on this steam boiler, what i want to know is was that at a persons house or a big building? and how dangerous are those to work on? for example can it explode in your face or is it safe for you to work with??
letseeitplease this was a 2 family house .the steam system was for the second floor appartment.they are safe if every thing is working properly .i have never seen one blowup or explode .. there pretty beefy
Auto water fillers on steam boilers, not a big fan of them, when they fail in open position, it rains in the basement. but, the downside to manual filling is people over fill, or fill by opening valve full open when boiler hot and crack the boiler.
Nice video I enjoy them. I have system in one of my home with that glass tube. But it not a Steam set up. It a radiator with water. Gas burner. Is it a name for this type of heater.
Wondering why the psi gauge goes to 30 psi like a non-steam boiler. Shouldn't it be a scale of 5 max so it is readable? I am a new tech trying to learn about steam boilers. I don't see them much due to the client base of my company but I have a friend with one,
When you were repairing the boiler you got a call on your cell. It was a guy named Felix, he needed s service call. thought it was kind of ironic. My phone never stops no matter what. it just shows you were in the job for real.
if you look at the controller, you can see that the filter has swollen up. The relay works on DC voltage. Relay isn't bad. the voltage supply is AC on the relay, hence, the rattling 60 cycles noise
Hey Steve on my hot water heater its electric 80 gallon the water is coming out the pressure relief valve do you think I need to install a expansion tank on the cold water side
michael white if you have a double check on water meter look at the water meter,,then yes you need and domestic expantion tank it will have a 3/4 male thread end .. a tank for a boiler will have a 1/2 thread .if there is no check valve the water will expand back into water main .if there is a check the heated water will build up pressure and blow the relieve valve
Hi Steve, I like the gauge glass cutter, I've never seen one of those. Normally I just score it around with a three cornered file ,and snap it off.Great video as always.Happy new year to you.
I learn something new everyday, good video and good job. By the way,, what is that squirmy looking stuff on the ground at around time 6.20 forward,,, slugs, worms, mutated creepy crawlers??? whats the advantage of stream boiler vs hot water,, which is more efficient do you think ?
Hey Steve, great work man! I'm new to this field, loved this video. Just finishing up my HVACR classes now, got a week left. Good to see work in the field as it's done. Great camera work too. Thanks again. NY is the best ain't it?
67tr876 i like hot water better ,but steam is ok if run right ,but needs more flushing and maintainance ,for a house hot water makes more sense thats just my oppion
Nice, I'm always learning new things in your videos, thanks for putting them up! Also, was this boiler room in a parking lot? Sounded like the cars were just off camera.
I haven't seen any one else use one of those cutters for years! I have 2x steam boilers I work on, and usually change the glasses 2 or 3 times a year due to scale build-up. TIP - you can also use a small triangular file to score around the glass if you forgot your cutter (:-) naa - never did that before...)
Question: A method of connecting pipe and pipefittings in the equalizer line between the steam and return headers of a boiler, is A: lift connection B: lift fitting C: Hartford loop D: spring piece
Towards the end of the video the relief valve was horizontal. Read the yellow tag. Usually step #7 or second paragraph reads that the rv needs to be installed vertical.
When you replaced the safety relief valve, you missed a good training opportunity to ensure the correct set pressure and capacity replacement valve was selected. The relief valve (rv) you installed was 450 lbs/hr.. or 450,000 btus/hr. The boiler has to have a btu/hr input rating less than the rating on the rv. If not, the rv is considered undersized on capacity..
I had a service tech replace my sight glass on my boiler. He broke glass tubes that he was trying to install 3 times before he was successful on the 4th try. He was running out of glass tube fast. He had just enough glass tube for the last try. Whew! I stopped using that company after that and other issues.
KQP Twin what is the pressure switch set at??? it might be set to low ,a steam boiler needs to be flushed out . you can not flood a steam boiler ..where is the water level???
Never understood why folks let things go so long before maintenance. I like the float lco's better than the probes. Water feeders overfill the boiler, adding too much oxygen.
ii was wearing blue gloves an since I had a white beard somebody at work call me papa Smurf and I felt like papa Smurf.Good laugh, So papa Smurf lay down the rules. by the way, I would like to see the dog with her small blue gloves
Larry Cole some people do not know about mantanice they just do not think of it .he was a cool guy if he has a problem he will call me .i am good with that .yes cash is king
That glass should have been replaced long before it broke. (Very dirty and thin and the ends) This is a perfect example of Russian roulette service. Sooner then later it will bite you in the a** (end). and you will be Russian to find the boiler man.

Nice job....never seen a glass tube cutter, you got it all brother!
Nicholas CeeA i have a few different styles of glass cutters in my truck
Steven, what brand/make/model cuter is it?
I've never seen glass tubbing cut like that before good job Steve we learn something new every day good video
Steam heating boilers are going exinict. Top notch video by Steve here on how to repair one. They are a different beast from a hw boiler.
I don't know why, they give the best heat. They're more efficient from what I learned, and NO DESERT DRY AIR like forced air furnaces.

Nice Job, Been about 10 years since I worked on steam boiler. Never seen a glass cutter like that , got to be old. looks like it worked good.
Arnie Grote some times the old tools work better then the new

Longeno55 merry christmas longeno thanks for the support
Another great video...can you explain why you didnt use LWCO factor setting... Would the boiler run ok on this setting?
Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hoping you could put out a video explaining the pressure controls and maybe going over the difference between one pipe and two pipe systems.
Pat Ohara sure i can do a video on it
Was that controller from the late 90's early 2000's?

nerdful1 i do not play around with caps on boards. but thats for the info..
Love the "Blue Glove Club"!! LMAO! Nice work Steve. Very interesting tool for the site glass.
jtbgto 1 its a old tool and works great
You got a big truck and I am sure you got a great idea of what to carry onboard, Do you have to go chase parts often or do you have it nearly perfected ??
Great video to learn from, thank you for sharing your knowledge to help others less experienced.
Doug Doty i do not carry low water cutoffs ,to many different ones needed and not a lot of steam boilers left
Great job Steve. Wish I knew more about steam.
tstatech its not that hard i will post more videos about steam

Steven, that was dude that called you while you were on this job.
Thanks for the detailed explanation of the low water cut off with probe.

Great video and good job Steve. You sure work on a big variety of equipment. Thanks for sharing.
DC Rickerson i do have a different type of job
Good video! Understood everything. Hold on to your glass cutter not easy to find that style. The ones on Amazon are crap.
I like your videos and your approach to service.
Grew up in a house with steam heat. Don't remember how many time we had the site glass replaced since it was so dirty.
nice video, steam boilers are challenging for sure, thanks for sharing the good info Steve, always helpful. stay warm out there
Hybrid nj thanks for commenting nj
Nice video I enjoy them.
I have system in one of my home with that glass tube. But it not a Steam set up. It a radiator with water. Gas burner.

Great work Steve, that New Yorker, can out new.
leanorlando she is good to go for a bit more

great video, never thought about a sight glass tube breaking, I like the glass cutter. You do good work.
Phillip Groom they do break ..but can be replaced easy enough
Ive never worked on steam. Nice job steve
awsom70 i work on some steam when i have to not a big fan of steam .its old school out dated .technology
steven lavimoniere awsom70 If steam heat is maintained it is the best heat you can get. And you don't have the dry air that needs to be humidified.

I love the blue glove club -- addition... Also learned a lot about how auto-refill boilers work and about Steam. Good video, keep it up bro!
n3lee thanks for the comment
Thank you for taking the trouble to make this very helpful video!

Great job steven ! Do you like hot water or steam ? Am a steam guy I aways liked it better you just have to run it right.
67tr876 i like hot water better ,but steam is ok if run right ,but needs more flushing and maintainance ,for a house hot water makes more sense thats just my oppion
steven lavimoniere Yea thats true steam is better in buildings.
Nice video. The steam relief valve is supposed to be installed vertically though, right?
Nice, I'm always learning new things in your videos, thanks for putting them up! Also, was this boiler room in a parking lot? Sounded like the cars were just off camera.
Michael Milburn it was right on the street the axcess door.the house was a corner house in the city

Nice video Steve. Was workin on one of these yesterday.
Steam gauge glass half way filled . I got pressures switch set at 4psi cut out at 1.5
KQP Twin you might need more pressure . to get the steam up there
Another great one Steve, thanks.

KQP Twin what is the pressure switch set at??? it might be set to low ,a steam boiler needs to be flushed out . you can not flood a steam boiler ..where is the water level???
never seen glass tube cutter before, nice tool
Were you dodging cars while you were working on that boiler? I have one word for the owner "Maintenance".
Larry Cole he paid me cash so i will help him out again ..
Nice job and video like always Steven
Nice job Steve
Harry Dickson thanks harry my friend
Great buddy, more of these please.
Someone broke that glass Steve 😉 Then ya cut a new piece and tighten till it cracks and back it off a quarter turn.
thanks for the great video, all of the facts and no song and dance. Hope mine isn't rusted out....
I’ve seen sight glasses break when power goes out and the room gets cold and they freeze
Great video. Thanks for posting.
efman2k3 thanks for the comment brother
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
I have a steam boiler i hit the switch on the vent damper and it works for 1 hour and then it goes off and it won't turn on again ???
Juan Henriquez your vent damper is defective. Leave it in the open position. Or replace it
Thanks 🙏🏼 so much for answering my question 🙏🏼
Never understood why folks let things go so long before maintenance. I like the float lco's better than the probes. Water feeders overfill the boiler, adding too much oxygen.
hi steven could you make a video how to wire a transformer from breaker box and oil burner.and sorry if my spelling is bad
Great video...enjoyed.

Why do you wear gloves club , how do you become a member Steve. Is Miss Molly secretary
good job steven
ms air llc bill rosborough thanks for the comment
I used to work with a guy that cut those with a tubing cutter
That is an Old School Tool, I haven't seen one in awhile.
Steve is well water has the big blue tank to provide pressure
michael white change the t&p valve .. if the water gets to hot that type of relief will go off also .t&p means temp@pressure
Relief valve is suppose to be straight up not sideways
Looked like bad electrolytic cap on upper right side of the board.
My Parent's Water Stove has one of those.
