Someone pays them to answer their question, and they have to be honest about how little scientist know. But they do provide an answer about taurine, but not on what extra taurine will do.
Okay to be fair the video is titled "Why is it in my energy drink?" not "What does it do?" They answered the actual question, it's because some people think it might boost energy.
Bonus fact... Cats, unlike most other mammals, are unable to synthesize taurine but is essential to their health. So cat food is usually rich in it to help overcome any issues.
It was always explained to me that the taurine was included to help counteract the jittery feeling caffeine and the other energy supplements gave you, and that it overall mellowed you out and let you focus more intensely. At least, that's what my one friend with ADD who takes it to help with that said.
I too have ADD and I've found taurine has really helped me with focus. Like it's insane how much I get done after drinking a Guronsan 구론산 which is a lil vitamin drinks that doesn't use caffeine but taurine. I wonder if maybe the effects of Taurine are more significant on people with ADD than people without 🤔
I know from experience - I sometimes take a taurine supplement along with my afternoon coffee. The caffeine does its work but I don't get wired from it.
While taurine is sometimes called an amino acid, and indeed is an acid containing an amino group, it is not an amino acid in the usual biochemical meaning of the term, which refers to compounds containing both an amino and a carboxyl group
I get migraines (the severe type with blindness/auras). I find that a supplement I take with Taurine (2000mg) crushes the migraine during onset. Recently it has been suggested that migraine onset is characterised by a 'tsunami' of glutamate release into the brain. Taurine may play a role in deactivating some of that as it's happening. I'm not a doctor - and none of this is proven by studies. However, if you get migraines like me, this may be a relatively low risk hack to try out.
Hey Sean, I suffer from the same type of migraines. My suggestion is to take acetaminophen and ibuprofen at first sign of a migraine. For me, I usually get blind spots before the onset of a migraine. Hope this helps
I used to get silent migrates, which manifests as blurred vision then a low grate head ache. I would average at least once a day. I found taurine eliminated all vision issues and head ache. I’ve been taking it now for 10 years with no side effects.
A family member get migraines with aura's and vision changes in one eye. Shes found 500mg arginine to be helpful because it dilates the little blood vessels. Not medical advice.
Yall lithium does it too. Thats its main job in the brain. Everyone I've met who has had migraines tested low in lithium on their blood tests. I take lithium orotate OTC. I do take taurine as well. I have taken 1.5g for 9 months now. Its a game changer too. No side effects from lithium or taurine. They make me feel light and clean and airy.
@@Sarahizahhsum You are correct. I'm just discovering my own autism and ADHD. Yes. In fact, enough people have heard of it, often in relation to energy drinks, that Scishow made an entire episode about this one ingredient instead of any others.
My best friend suffered an aneurysm at age 21 and died instantly. I was gobsmacked when it happened in front of me at breakfast. He just switched off, from vibrant to dead in 1 second. Yours, presumably, was less serious. I too would like to see an episode on this issue.
Yeah, it was that sudden for me as well. I was a very healthy college student going off campus for a workout, then collapsed in immense pain. Nothing to hint at it, and still no real explanation for why it happened at all!

Started watching SciShow for the science. Stayed for Michael Aranda~ I am shamefully in love with his voice when I should be learning. First time since Freshman year in high school (6yrs) that I've been distracted by the speaker from science.
Today i saw this really muscular guy drinking a bottle of coke and smoking a cigarette. God knows how he made those gains if that's a regular activity for him
+Thurgor Supreme Unfortunately true. Smoking is a long term destructive force. It is relentless and determined, like the Terminator. It'll get you eventually.
Just because someone is a smoker doesn't always effect them as much as you think. I bet in your mind you have the stereotype that people who smoke tend to be those overweight people who sit down most of the time. Smoking would reduce the amount of oxygen flowing in the persons blood, that is true; but people have also shown that when their bodies lack something they develop small coping strategies. You should be asking, how often does the person smoke, how often do they work out. Smoking once every few days impacts you less than if you chain smoked and if you were already really fit before you started smoking it is easier to keep the same level of fitness than to gain more levels while being shorter on breath. Athletes have been known to have oxygen deprivation during training because it can help you improve quicker by forcing the body into anaerobic training quicker and longer but also causing exhaustion quicker. Just the fact that you went "one of the dumbest things I've ever heard" means you don't even watch the news about current events. Plus the key part of learning is curiosity and the ability to be taught different to what you know. Instead of flat out denying something you should at least take time to look into what the possible causes might be. And no, I'm not saying smoking makes you fitter, it will destroy your body. But while you are younger you can push your body with things like oxygen deprivation more than when you are an adult.
Energy drinks provide psychological energy for those who are trying to get back into a regular sleep routine or are trying to stay awake. My research into the topic reveals that there are people that drink it for the taste, but that statistic is very low. A person's sleep pattern may be motivated by the drugs they abuse or take; Marijuana is linked to energy drink consumption in this way. People drink the stuff for motivation.
Actually a lot of peple, me included, in Hungary felt the energy drinks went less effective, when taurin was left out because of some regulation. We didn't know what was the cause, at first. Just felt, where 1 can was enough, now needs 2-3 cans... But some didn't felt the change, so maybe it doesn't effect everyone the same way...
The theory goes that taurine balances out the otherwise overstimulating effects of energy drinks which contain stimulants like: Guarana, caffeine, sugar etc. it increases gaba receptors, so it’s basically reduces anxiety effect. people go and buy taurine on its own or mix it with caffeine thinking it’s Guarana and a stimulant. Nubs.
Fun fact taurine is needed by cats and it’s illegal to sell cat food without taurin in it since they can’t make it in there body like other animals and that’s why cats are obligate Carnivores because if they don’t eat meat from other animals that have made taurine in there body then cats won’t have taurine and end up dying from naurological problems
Admittedly that was the first thought I had and I just had to come to the comments to see all the other people talking about it and your's was the first comment at the very top. Yup.
the reason of that mixed bag of results comes from not understanding the function of taurine. it does not change VO2 max because as far i understood, the pH buffering function of taurine has only effects on the conversion rate of fatty acids in ATP production. but at VO2max the mitochondria switches 100% to glucose burning. it only shows effects at lower performance regarding fatMax. and that is more a health thing or low carb/ketogenic athletes. of course it is perfect for people who have too much (visceral) fat and are deficient in taurine because of hyperglycemia. but it goes beyond that. it showed a higher fat burning rate in swimming athletes at 70% vo2max. lots of benefits, also from supplementing to healthy people. but the right studies have to be made first. if you make a study that checks if hairs are getting green after intake of taurine, then it will fail.
nah u do get super speed.. as in you'll die super fast, same thing with redbull gives u wings, u do get wings, cause when people die they go to heaven where jesus decides what happens

ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional/ B12 is an important nutrient but not a source of energy, those are carbs, proteins and fats. If I'm reading the second paragraph right it is necessary to metabolize fats and proteins which may be where the confusion is coming from.
Nah, a can of soda (cola) has only about 1/3 to 1/5 of the caffeine per fluid ounce of an energy drink. Caffeine is the main source of energy, b12 pales in comparison.
So we've put this stuff in our drink, we don't know what it does, if anything at all. But all we know is that no one's complained about it thus far, so we'll keep using it and see what happens. - Red Bull Exec. 2016
Sometimes these "studies" baffle me. Not sure if taurine is a factor? Then why not test taurine in isolation? It's one of the cardinal rules of the scientific method: control the variables. Testing thr entire drink without a follow up focus is as useless as me just drink it myself and keeping a diary.
Money. Corporations tend to only spend such resources on things that can be patented, which Taurine can not. So for example if RedBull funded a comprehensive study and they actually found tangible benefits they could print it right on their can, but so could all of their competitors. Effectively nullifying any incentive to fund such studies.
"The 20 standard amino acids you learned about in chemistry class" Yeah... I totally remember that from chemistry class... thanks Amierican education system.
Oh and +Punkonater wrote "essential" which means "they don't synthesize it" in contrast to non-essential amino acids... ..I'm just saying this, to complete my quest to be a smart ass ;-)
Taurine is a mood enhancer. Therefore it's a type of " happy pill" ..it's great in energy drinks because caffeine , B complex vitamins and taurine together makes a synergistic brew of Awesome
According to the video, it's a) extracted from animals/fish or b) produced by your own body. In the case of Taurine you consume, I'd say that means non-vegetarian. Oh the -joys- problems of ideological vegetarians.
I suffer from.migraines and I've found that 15 minutes after consuming Red Bull that it took the edge off the migraine or stopped it from happening when I caught it early. I tried for over a year to and figure out what it was about Red Bull that made me feel more "awake" and not foggy brain, lethargic and took the edge off the migraines throbbing pain. The only thing I could figure was the Taurine. So I did a fair bit of research about Taurine and migraines and holy heck.....everyone was praising the hell out of it for migraine control and management. I'm yet to buy it as a bulk product and try it as my son who is 7 is now getting migraines as well so we want to see if indeed Taurine actually does make a difference to how we feel in the morning ings and migraine management.
Ever since I was young, my parents make me (and my little sister) take taurine vitamins/ supplements because they heard that it makes people "smarter." Personally I think I'm a smart kid who's very alert in class (I assume that bc I get straight A's--though that doesn't necessarily mean I'm "smart." I may be smart in the sense of paying attention in class and understanding what I'm being taught). I'm also a fast learner especially in memorization and I'm also a pretty good musician.
+IcantstopANIMATION_788 I'm a giant ugly fatass, but this dude has potential, is an entertainer, and that haircut sucks eggs. Public figures must stand up to criticism and scrutiny. Cest la vieve.
What he is basically saying is he has no clue what he's talking about. You can actually get hundreds of thousand of views telling people " I ain't got no clue, man". LOL
taurine does help boost performance for me, but it has an issue of causing me to become slightly dehydrated immediately after drinking, which can decrease performance
So I was looking for a more in depth explanation of how it's made and found that taurine is derived from l-cysteine. The majority of l-cysteine is obtained industrially by hydrolysis of animal materials, such as poultry feathers or hog hair. It can be synthetically made, but the cost for the finished product is a lot higher (and we all know they will choose a cheaper option is possible). I will stick to water and home made ginger beer etc... going forward 😉
Vitamins also remove free radicals. Research on vitamins shows that the free radicals released when being active and doing sport are not harmful. Instead researchers claim that they have positiv effects on health and that too much vitamin intake counteracts these positiv effects.
my health teacher taught us that red bull had bull semen... american public education is the best
You mean it doesn't?
Well they've just lost themselves a customer!
Given that red food colouring (cochineal) is made from beetle shells, it was not outside the realms of possibility!
Well, at least he could (hopefully) prevent some of your classmates from getting Diabetis in one way.

There's no bull sperm in Red Bull? Damn, guess I'll stop drinking it...
But how else are you going to get your wings?
+Bruce Dunn Rip the wings from a Condor.
Better make that pigeons. They're plentiful and no one will care about their mass slaughter.
+Bruce Dunn Pigeons are tiny,Condors are big!

They're flying shit machines, second only to the mosquito as a waste of the gift of flight.
REDBULL DOESNT CONTAIN BULL SEMEN? *throws Redbull out the window
LMAO
Can fly's away cuz it has wings.
Maybe that's why it doesn't give you wings. Cause everyone knows the bull semen does that.
To get the best bull semen, you have to go to the source. 😋

Sometimes these "studies" baffle me. Not sure if taurine is a factor? Then why not test taurine in isolation? It's one of the cardinal rules of the scientific method: control the variables. Testing thr entire drink without a follow up focus is as useless as me just drink it myself and keeping a diary.
obviously. But it sounds to me like a halfassed study to begin with if the sample size is that small.
Money. Corporations tend to only spend such resources on things that can be patented, which Taurine can not. So for example if RedBull funded a comprehensive study and they actually found tangible benefits they could print it right on their can, but so could all of their competitors. Effectively nullifying any incentive to fund such studies.
Nice highlights!
"The 20 standard amino acids you learned about in chemistry class"
Yeah... I totally remember that from chemistry class... thanks Amierican education system.
Thx Scishow!!! This is a question I want to know for so long!!!!
Btw, Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats. True story.
Year, I was a bit disappointed that this didn't got mentioned by +SciShow
They also don't synthesise it so they need to consume it.
+MrAntieMatter that's what I meant
Ah, that makes more sense now, thanks for clearing that up.
Oh and +Punkonater wrote "essential" which means "they don't synthesize it" in contrast to non-essential amino acids...
..I'm just saying this, to complete my quest to be a smart ass ;-)
Thank you for this information :)
It's actually fairly effective for reducing calve and back muscle "pumps" for hardcore bodybuilders, especially when taking steroids or prohormones.
Proof or gtfo
And I just caught a fish thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis big!
Cats require taurine to remain healthy - it's like a vitamin for them. It's added to commercial feed.
Taurine is a mood enhancer. Therefore it's a type of " happy pill" ..it's great in energy drinks because caffeine , B complex vitamins and taurine together makes a synergistic brew of Awesome
Awe man... You guys made him self conscious about his jacket
So what is Taurine? where does it come from? and more importantly is it vegetarian?
According to the video, it's a) extracted from animals/fish or b) produced by your own body. In the case of Taurine you consume, I'd say that means non-vegetarian. Oh the -joys- problems of ideological vegetarians.
Bull cum
Who is it? Why is it here? Is it a virgin?
±
I really want to know if it's free-range.
I have wanted to know this for so long!
LOL, he took the jacket off....
llf😂
Lmk the results 🙏🏻
Watching as I'm drinking a monster
Uhohhotdog Gaming yeah same here lol

Your, uh, right shoulder is an interesting spot for the mic...
On another note, I loved the vid like always(:
Why do people think energy drinks are edgy? It makes me ashamed every time I drink them. They don't make you cool, people.
They are supposed to look cool and edgy? All I got was worried looks and some light teasing when I had them to survive all-nighters.
+Julia Mak
#CollegeStruggles
That... That was my one way left to be cool...
Fine. Fine. Where's that sweater vest and those wallpaper swatches?
someone's triggered
Who the fuck thinks they're edgy?
"What does this do?"
"I don't know. Throw it in our energy drink."
*I've never been concerned about taurine in my drink, but I've always wondered why it contains "horny goat weed"*
Very helpful 10/10
Why is there Trisodium Phosphate in my once favorite cereals
I want to know what all the big science words in cereal are
To disguise the taste of the octonoic sulfate of course.
+RebelWinterwolf take chemistry then
+Christopher Fryman But still like why are they putting a paint thinner or whatever it is in food? like yeah potassium if that is but still
+Christopher Fryman Don't get upset, do your research. Some have deemed it to be a hazardous substance
Hillarious, "like you learned in chemistry class"!
Taurine + Guarana would be nice combo, but not in energy drinks, just get urself them separately, u can easy buy thoose.
So basically taurine is exactly what i thought it was. A buzzword.
Like most things these days...
Well not really. The body wouldn't make it if it didn't do anything. We just don't completely know what it does.
+Jam That's exactly why it's a buzzword. They put it on their can despite not knowing what it does.
Well I'll agree to disagree on that matter.
Actually it's something you'd find in bull turds if you're looking for it!
i love this stuff!!!
+
The only reason i drank red bull and other drinks was cuz i thought it was bull sperm
Certified Organic. 100% All Natural.
great topic.
hi
Nice vid
Taurine is urine, for you can't spell taurine without urine.
I combine Taurine and Matcha green tea, and the result is very relaxing. I don't get the same result from Matcha alone.
where did you get the taurine? by mixing redbull drinks with matcha?
GHAAAAA, you're hair dude.... Fire your stylist.
I dont know about you, but not everybody is narcissistic.
Why did you call him hair? Is that some new weird insult I've not picked up on yet?
+IcantstopANIMATION_788 I'm a giant ugly fatass, but this dude has potential, is an entertainer, and that haircut sucks eggs. Public figures must stand up to criticism and scrutiny. Cest la vieve.
I identify myself as hair and I'm offended by this statement.
i think he looks good...
Thank you, I have been wondering about that.
What he is basically saying is he has no clue what he's talking about. You can actually get hundreds of thousand of views telling people " I ain't got no clue, man". LOL
nycliontwin24 double negative lol and also he isn't saying that he doesn't know, he's saying nobody knows.
but why cover a subject when you have nothing to offer?
Did you put the slightest bit of reverb Mr. Aranda's voice in this video?
taurine does help boost performance for me, but it has an issue of causing me to become slightly dehydrated immediately after drinking, which can decrease performance
He never answered the question where the source come from. He's obviously not going to answer and probably reading a main stream paper.
What do the crosses mean next to certain ingredients and the nutrition label
Is taurine energizing? Someone told me it was, but it is part of my magnesium supplement for sleep...
Nice hair! It really fits you!
huh i was drinking an energy drink when this popped up in my sub box
Yooo, nice hair! You look great!
Taking 3 to 4g of taurine can quell anxiety for about an hour and can help you get to sleep.
Vitamins also remove free radicals. Research on vitamins shows that the free radicals released when being active and doing sport are not harmful. Instead researchers claim that they have positiv effects on health and that too much vitamin intake counteracts these positiv effects.
So the “trust me bro” source was wrong.?
Taurine is just increasing the serotonin
I didn't see him blink once in this entire video
