  • Tree boas, especially Emerald tree boas are the most sought after snakes in the amazon rainforest, but also in herpetoculture. And in this video, which may be the most in depth and comprehensive look into how the Northern Emerald tree boa is living in the wild, I take you to the rainforests of Suriname to look into how these amazing boas are living in the wild, so we better know how to care for them in our homes!

I’ve been anticipating an “Are we keeping emerald tree boas correctly?” Episode for many years, now my wait is finally over! As an Amazon Basin emerald keeper myself, I always look for ETB content on TH-cam to further improve my care and husbandry for this animal. Now that you showed us a glimpse of Amy Benzi’s setup, you got to make an episode touring her Amazon basin room and let us geek out on her world class emerald tree boa keeping skills and knowledge!

I think the babies are born the colors of the ground cover where they’re mainly found. The ground cover is mostly red but sometimes yellow or green.

    • @carltoncarnivores
      @carltoncarnivores 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The ground is more or less brown everywhere in forests; leaf litter is the background, soil color doesn't affect much because it's under debris.

Wait a minute! Etb’s can be born yellow? I have never even heard of that. I thought only gtp’s could be born yellow or red. I’ve never seen a yellow etb neo. Only red. I can’t even find a pic of a yellow neo when I ran a google search.
Very interesting. You think you know something then you find out you don’t. If i heard anyone else say etb neos could be yellow I would have argued with em over it.
Thanks for sharing your trip with us Dav. The ETB’s where super cool.

So incredibly cool to see these awesome snakes in their natural habitat! On the subject of neonate coloration, if they're eating frogs and lizards, it's reasonable to think they look like fruit and flowers because that's what attracts insects, which attract frogs and lizards. That's my theory!

This is a real rattleon winning video. All your videos are award wing but this was the one I've been waiting for. The emerald green tree boa. I love all boas but this is my favorite snake and 35 dollars to keep these majestic snakes in the wild is well worth the small price to pay in comparison to the hunters that gather these snakes to market them. To buy one here in the USA at a reptile show you're talking thousands of dollars. As much as I would love to have one in my home I would rather see these incredible boas thrive in their own habitat and be happy. Lol I have fake real looking emerald tree boas from safari ltd that I can display and enjoy those.

Enjoyed the video as always. I have a theory about why the young tree boas are born with variations of orange, red, yellow, etc. Since they are primarily active at night, the natural light spectrum at night on the forest floor could possibly make the orange colors practically disappear against the forest floor. My theory is based on observing my Brazilian Rainbow Boa that is active at night. The substrate in her enclosure is Reptichip and in the dim light at night it's almost impossible to see her against the color of that substrate. I think between the color and texture of her skin she is able to hunt at night almost undetectable to predators. I'm no expert on how predators such as birds of prey, racoons, cats, and other nocturnal hunters see at night but my theory is that there are certain light spectrums that are more difficult for those predatory animals to see and distinguish from the surroundings at night and this coloration enables these snakes to better blend into their surroundings at night when they are most vulnerable.

As a general rule, if a flower is red in the tropics it is to attract hummingbirds. (purple=bee pollinators, white=moth pollinators) So I would say that a red snake would probably be to attract birds. At least I think this is more likely than rats since they don't see reds very well.

Now I wonder who is the first person to make the tanks for the emerald tree boas like these.. they are coiling on not the thick branch but they are relaxing on the bush, I mean on the leaves and thin stems etc. And they are not strikey, they are actually so curious, friendly. I think the reason the babies are born such bright colours is because in nature, yellow and red typically signify toxicity or poisonous/dangerous animals and so rather than having to worry about camouflage from predators, many predators would stay away from them believing them to be toxic like poison dart frogs. While green would help them be better ambush predators a lot of the prey items they go for as babies are not as fast moving (crickets, insects, roaches, frogs, lizards) and so they're better of having a colour that is a warning to other predators to stay away.

One theory on coloration is the same as why tigers are orange. Deer can't see the color orange so tigers blend in when a deer looks at them. So is the baby tree boa yellow/orange bc either their predators or prey don't perceive that color?

Dav, I truly wish I'd had this video to reference back in the early 80's when I bought my first female Suriname emerald (for $600) from Tom Crutchfield's early Herpetofauna price list! I was an undergrad music student, so $600 was a huge investment for me back then! I recall being slightly disappointed when I opened the bag that my new emerald tree boa looked different from the drawing I had admired for many years on the cover of my "Snakes As Pets" book by Hobart M. Smith! Where was the white stripe I expected? Still, I really loved my lady Suriname and bought a male Suriname emerald from Tom the following year - and was very fortunate to breed my pair the third year, and actually witnessed the birth of 9 great looking babies from my female Nadine! Crutchfield then gave me the contact number for Trooper Walsh of the National Zoo who schooled me about a different type he called "Amazonian Emeralds". Ahh, so those are the ones with the white stripes, ok! Some years later I finally acquired a pair of Amazonians and successfully bred them as well. Emeralds are still my favorite snake!
Amy, it's great to see you out there in the field working with the snakes you love! I appreciate the meticulous way you care for your emerald collection! Excellent Video here. I'm a Fan!!!

Great video! Something quite noteworthy in the video that is super interesting to me is seeing that all of those wild emeralds are still clearly well hydrated, despite near zero rain during your 10 day trip, and likely very sparse rain in the days before and after with the drought.
No rain combined with temperatures well above what a lot of people provide for a basking spot let alone ambient temperature, most people would believe these snakes should be severely dehydrated without any rainfall. Yet, they are clearly in excellent shape with no signs of dehydration. They must be hydrating by other means.
Did you get night measurements of temperature and humidity, info on fog, or any info on them drinking, especially during a time of drought like this?

When I look at these Juveniles, they almost look similar to another species of South American Boa known as the Rainbow Boa. But unlike the real Rainbow Boas, the scales of these Juvenile Emerald Tree Boas don’t shimmer by the reflection of the sun.

I would think the juvi color is for birds since rodents are nocturnal which color doesn't play a big effect. Also rodents color vision is very weak. Birds would definitely focus on color searching for fruit .

My theory on why emerald tree boas start out a bright colour like that as a defense mechanism. Poisnous or dangerous things are bright colours, so it's an adaptation to help survivability until adulthood
