For those unaware, Al Jolson was one of the most popular blackface musicians in vaudeville
As a non-american, I was super confused. Googled it. Fucking lost my shit at the joke. People like shitting on SNL, but the clips I find on youtube tend to be fucking fire.

Even more ironically, Jolson was actually quite supportive of civil rights causes for black Americans and pushed for greater integration of the entertainment industry for pretty much his whole career. And of course his most famous blackface performance in the Jazz Singer is really a skewering of the minstrel show and the way Jewish vaudeville actors couldn’t find mainstream success if they didn’t put on blackface.

The best SNL hosts are the ones that blend into the sketches seamlessly. Watching sketches like this I forgot Halsey was the host and not just a cast member. She did a great job with this episode.

How in the heck is it that Gov. Northam got the whole media to refer to it simply as a “blackface scandal”. That’s probably the least controversial part of the entire photo. Why is it that the media refuses to focus on the fact that he thought having a black man in front of a Klansman (aka implying horrible, terroristic events) was humorous. He needs to resign immediately, so that the party can get back to it’s true message.
You're right. Blackface in and of itself is subjective depending upon if it was done in malice or done in admiration, like in a Michael Jackson way. Northam's photo standing with a KKK costumed friend (or worse, that was Northam under the hood) is reprehensible and that's what makes that photo so disgusting and worthy of resignation.

Let’s be upset if someone paints their faces black and tries to imitate us.”. No. If you take the time to look into the history of blackface you’ll understand. However, it just seems like people don’t want to understand. Now I must say it’s kind of like swimming in murky waters, such as if a child wanted to dress like Michael Jackson as someone said. There are other ways to do it without having to paint your face. At the same time that could be a lesson.
