    Matt! Swap your Z(ed) 7 bodies out for 7II bodies... you won't regret it and then wait out for the 9 or 8 as and when. Everything is better about it... particularly the speed and focusing is a quantum leap ahead. I know your main photography is city/landscape but you won't regret it.

    That Bokeh is mind-blowingly good. I expected the perfect sharpness, aberration correction, build quality etc., but to have amazing bokeh as well? Nikon are smashing it.

      YEP SLR, it is very impressive so far :) Are there Soviet Z mount lens available? Cheers Matt

    • @SovietLensReviews
      @SovietLensReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattIrwinPhotography I like to take the glass half-full viewpoint and pretend that every Soviet lens is Z-mount (technically, the Z mount is the first Nikon-made FF mount they've been able to adapt to natively/without glass!) When it comes to more modern Russian-made lenses like those from Zenit, unfortunately they're a bit cagey when it comes to if they'll ever make anything in Z-mount. Their message back on Insta when I asked them the same question was a very definitive "We will make such lenses in the future, maybe" 😆

    • @SovietLensReviews
      @SovietLensReviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattIrwinPhotography The most fun I've had is with the Industar-50-2 50mm f/3.5 pancake - I reckon it's also one of the more mass-appeal Soviet lenses for Z bodies, it fits the 'tiny, light, dirt cheap' niche better than possibly any other lens out there as you can pick up a mint copy for ~$30, not including an M42-Z adapter.

    Checked NikonRumors this morning and the 105mm is selling like gangbusters - well over expectations. Which means it will be out of stock for months! I ordered mine shortly after announced. I didn't jump on it ASAP so I suspect I'll be cooling my heals - hopefully not months! It does look like a killer lens. :)

      Yeah, I think USA sites will have long back orders, here in Australia, at the local stores Digidirect, JB HiFI, Teds etc, I have been able to buy everything I have been after so far, and the only items I waited about 6 weeks for was the 2x TC and the 70-200 2.8, but that was deep in the middle of COVID last year. But yes the response even here on the channel from commenters, perhaps 30-50% are buying. It seems like a great lens for the price. Cheers Matt

    Have you heard about Nikon’s NX Field Remote Shooting System due to be released June 17th? A remote shooting system that allows frontline news reporters to link multiple Nikon DSLRS in the field, allowing to operate and adjust your whole network of cameras with the one camera hooked up to the FTP server. Another good invention from Nikon, and another sign that it’s not quite willing to dump the DSLR.

    Wow the price amazes me . For a top of the line lens that is as useful as a 105 macro with fast dual focusing motors the price seems great. Probably $600 or so less than I was thinking. The price to performance ratio is huge . Almost one of those must own Nikkor lenses as a do it all ...... for its focal length . You likened it to an 85 . Well it’s not but as a portrait lens great focal length and you won’t be limited to the close focusing that some portrait lenses have . This is a lens that can be used for so so much.
    Now the 50mil macro , I’m not a 50 mil guy but another super super useful lens .
    I’d say if Nikon would have made this a 40 and macro two birds are killed with one stone . That’s me though but 40 gives just enough width as for group shots , landscape, nature for a cool close up perspective to portraits even wide enough for some cityscape and street photography

    What an utterly gorgeous, perfect lens. The only thing I don't like is they don't call them Micro Nikor any more, everything else about it seems so right. Already have my NPS pre-order in place. With all the murkiness in the rest of everywhere else in our lives, thank you Nikon 👍 and thank you Matt!!!

    Hi Matt! Kudos on the 20K subscriber mark, of which I am one! Nice “Intro” to the new NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S! As a user of the Laowa 100 f/2.8 Ultra Macro with a Nikon Z7, while it has proven to be indeed, ULTRA-sharp, I find that the Focus "throw" is quite short, making it a bit time-consuming to achieve critical focus at the exact desired focus point, hence my great interest in this new Nikkor lens. So, do you feel that this lens has a very wide/ample focus throw (as other Micro-Nikkors have had), AND do you think that this lens will be sharper at 1:1 than the extremely sharp Laowa Ultra-Micro? Also, why did Nikon abandon the “Micro-Nikkor” designation for the “MC” designation? Thank you, sir, and again, Congratulations!

    I checked my 105 mm F2.8 AFD lens, and the focus limiter restricts the range to either near or far, so that feature is not new. I assume this is fly by wire, so the focus might be nice and sensitive close up ie better than mechanically focussed lenses.

    I am going to get the 105mm f/2.8 Nikkor Micro lens. But the AIS lens, not the S lens :) I don't need autofocus for macro, never use it, and with IBIS in the Z-cameras I won't need the VR either. Besides, most of my macro is done with a tripod.
    It's a shame that we're not talking more about the amazing vintage or AI/S Nikkor lenses as well, they're amazing, even today, and with the Z-cameras they are so easy to use.

      What Z body are you using? My experience with 'vintage' lenses - mostly AF-D - on the z7 has been rather disastrous.
      As for AF for macro, just shot series of dragon flies and butterflies, manual, and I think that fairly speedy AF in that new Z lens would have gotten me way more keepers. In addition to this the AF makes it more usable for other purposes.
      As for the VR, I think VR and IBIS work together and the usability is improved over IBIS only. That said I don't need that so much, as I need to keep up the shutter speed for moving stuff to begin with.

      @@marcusbraun8889 I have the Z5. I used my vintage lenses on a Fujifilm X-T3 before, a 50mm f1.4 NAI, Olympus Zuiko 135mm f3.5, and a Nikkor 200mm f4 AI. While I didn't get them for sharpness, I was always a bit underwhelmed, and didn't use them that much. When I switched to the Z5 they got a new life, even the 50mm is pretty sharp and all of them create good results now. I don't know if it's the X-trans sensor, or maybe because of the extra mp. The Z7 does have a lot of them, so the lenses would have to have good resolution. I can imagine that older lenses might struggle there.
      You are of course right, when it comes to shooting moving subjects, the new 105mm micro lens is by far the better choice. Also, the AI version is only 1:2 magnification, which I initially didn't consider. I'm not sure how much I need the 1:1 magnification for what I do, but in case I'll have to get a higher magnification, I'll probably get the Laowa 100mm f2.8, with its 2:1 magnification. I don't use autofocus or VR, but for you I totally get the need.

      The only one I still use is the 300mm f4, stopped down to f8 (f4 is unusable), with lots of light, and macro extenders at times. It's one hell of a fight (and many frames shot) to get good close up results, not recommended in terms of efficiency...
      The AF-D 85mm f1.8 is the only one with reasonable sharpness (even quite across the frame) on the z7, but never a sharp as the kit Z 24-70 f4 - and the purple fringing is something else!
      It's quite staggering how a single Z 27-70mm f4 produces far superior results than a bag of primes from the 90ies.

    Z9. One of the gossip sites in the interwebs reports a conversation with one of Nikon's marketing managers. Bottom line is that designers, R&D people have a hard time to get the camera at the quality level that is expected by now in the market. If it needs to be better than Nikon's DSLR flagship camera's and better than mirrorless flagship cameras of the competition then that is a heck of a challenge. Let's not forget that today's requirements to Nikon's developers are higher than 6 months ago, when competing flagship models still had to be released. But, if you call your website something to the effect of "gossip", then the question remains how reliable the report is. It's like the stock exchange: experiences from the past hold no guarantee for the future.
    It's high time for a sensor that does away with the scanning that today's cameras need to do in order to take a photo or movie frame. Completely does away with the mechanical shutter. That gives 32 bits color space (instead of today's 27). And has photosite shift.
    Make it simple. Or give me a color separation camera (*) that does away with the Bayer filter array over the sensor and the need for raw processing is gone. At Z 7ii resolution. For starters, without raw processing there is no loss from 14 bits to 9 so we could run at 42 bits RGB actually. No AA filter, no Bayer grid. And part of the problem of sensors is gone (that they have a hard time with light coming in at another angle than 90).

    Well done Matt on the milestone.. I will not be ordering one at a grand a pop. About 3 years ago our camera club had a talk from a macro photographer with some really great images. Her gear consisted of a camera body and a Sigma 105 2.8 macro HSM. So I bought that lens and it is a great lens and works fine on my z6ii. So well I could not see any difference between the results from that lens and the "award winning" 1.8 nikor s line lens I bought with the z camera. Well one difference it was less than half the price of the nikkor. So I sold the 1.8 quite quickly after that. The sigma came in a very strong padded zip up case as apposed to the nikkor that just had a bit of cloth for protection. My first Nikon D80 came with a reasonable leather case for protection but the cheapskating Nikon have been doing since then on these things really disappoints me. I think I have now found an adaptor for this lens to take it with me to my new system so I can bow out of the Nikon system. I have waited long enough for the z cameras to be made into the cameras they should have been at launch. I think Sony and Cannon have with their latest announcements shot Nikons fox. Whatever they had in the pipeline for this Z9 is proberly now behind the curve. How Nikon can produce the D850 and D500 and then produce the Z series the way they did total baffles me. My Z 6 ii takes great photos of static stuff. Portraits fine no issues but moving subjects they seem like a huge step backwards. Plus the capabilities on most competitors cameras just leave Nikon z cameras floundering in the dust. You have used other makes so you must know what I mean. The eye tracking on Cannons R 5 is just one example. I don't want to have to carry two cameras around to cover all bases hence moving on as I suspect a lot of others will be doing. Nikon make products for people to buy just like any other company and if the latest products are not what people want then of course the market place rules.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ed, thanks for your words and detailed message. Best of luck with your new system, I am sure it will serve you perfectly as only you know your needs best, and that is how we should all decide our camera of choice. :)
      As for Nikon not being able to track moving subjects, it sure can track moving things. The things it cannot track are very fast moving things. So if birds in flight are your bread and butter, or main interest, then you might Z9 or stay with your D500, D6 or D850. Although there are numerous videos online with people working with Z6 II's and Z7 II's and capturing wildlife. Otherwise ... I think the Nikon's stand up well. I recently captured school kids running around playing basketball with the Z 50mm 1.2, and I was very impressed by the results. How much have you shot moving subjects, not BIF's with native Z lenses on your Z6 II and the latest firmware?
      The statement the Z9 is 'behind the curve' before it arrives is an assumption. None of us outside of Nikon have any idea where it will land. So I am happy to leave statements like that until it has actually arrived.
      And again I would tender, what does the R5, A1 bring, besides BIF level focus tracking stickyness and 8K, that the Z9 wont have?
      The Z9 does have the 8K and the focus will be in the same space I suspect, what else are you after Ed?
      'Floundering in dust' ... Ed, shoot the 50mm 1.2, the 70-200 2.8 VR S, and now the 105 MC 2.8, to name just a few lenses that will simply have you questioning what is possible with 35mm optically. In some areas Nikon is playing catchup, in some areas they are ahead in my opinion. And in regard to the Z mount and what it offers and the optical formulas Nikon are putting together, I would respectfully suggest Nikon are rubbing shoulders with the best if not ahead optically overall. Pretty much everything about a camera can change with the next body, the next firmware update, but the one thing that is harder to do something about is the mount, and the lenses you can attach to that mount ... I know how I would like to invest in the future, and that is with the mount with the most headroom into the coming decades.
      The eye tracking in the R3, is super cool, I look forward to seeing how that is implemented. :)
      What system are you moving to Ed?
      Cheers
      Matt

      @@MattIrwinPhotography Sorry I didn't notice you had replied again I do apologise for not seeing it sooner.
      I suppose I fell out with the z6ii the first time I went out to do some wildlife. 402 shots and not one in focus. Or more precisely not in focus where I wanted it to be. I had been after a photo of a Heron locally that frequents the area. That day I couldn't believe my luck I was bang on for a shot of it flying in onto the river. My 500 would have had a series of shots to show at the club but I didn't have a single one in focus. Had I loads of money that camera would have had a float test right there and then.
      But I do watch Steve at Back Country Gallery as well and bought his book on the mirroless Nikon focusing and following his instructions with the wide area small and single point you can get results. If you get the subject to fill that area of the frame then you are in with a shout. Just try and keep the centre point on the critical target like we did years ago manually focusing at the same time as well. (At least the 6ii does auto focus on something ).
      I don't feel now being retired that I can justify two cameras as I have always only ever had one. I expect my camera to be a general be able to too anything I want. I had tracking with the 500 which was good and I feel the z's should do at least as well. I don't always take pictures of people running or dogs or cats. It does do them fine or at least as well as the 500 did so no issue there.
      The features where they are way out now I am looking which really made me think. Wildlife tracking obviously but that Cannon latches on like a magnet and like you this focus where you look feature I really want to see.A friend has lent me an Olympus as he swears by it. That has a number of features. It can take 80 Meg pics of a stationary subject. No blackout on burst shooting. 30fps if you want. Pro capture. That's what I meant about leaving Nikon in the dust really. I do not use the 14 frame burst as it is pointless as after the first 3 or 4 shots you aren't on the target anymore as Steve so graphically demonstrated in one of his videos so I usually just shoot by taking shots singly and quickly as I can keep on target better like that.
      I am having a go with another friends Cannon this weekend next. That I am looking forward too as well. One point where it beat the Olympus hollow was low light. I took a 4 sec shot in my bedroom with just the light from the numbers of a digital clock illuminating the lampshade. The image through the viewfinder was truly dreadful but the actual shot was actually quite good if you didn't crop it much it was recognisable. The Olympus needed the auto assist light to show the target and the shot was a lot noisy than the z.
      I just think now that with the Cannon and Sony announcements it is hard to see how Nikon can better them. You may know much more than me about what is what as I am just a Hoby photographer but no final decision yet but the Olympus takes good shots is a lot smaller and cheaper than ff. If the Cannon betters it then that may be the way ahead. Cheers Edward
