    8:12 neglects to point out that the 1997 Live Entertainment DVD is still the only home video release that has the original theatrical 5.1 Cinema Digital Sound mix from 1991 and for that reason is hugely important for purists and those averse to revisionism .All of the others after it have been tinkered with uncluding the Ultimate Ed and all the blurays and UHD

      Thanks for including that. If T2 ever gets a revamped 4K release, I may revisit this video with updated information like this. I’ve been hoping to find the THX Theatrical Cut Laserdisc which has this 5.1 soundtrack.

    I feel like the DVD's predating the Blu Ray and 4K are the best in my opinion. They just feel the closest to what appeared on the Laserdisc and in theaters (excluding the Ultimate Edition), and overall give you so much more value than any new remaster can offer.

    WOW! I really enjoyed this feature! Spectacular man! Keep doing stuff like this!
    I have always been a big fan of T2 and the whole Terminator franchise. And its so exciting that a new terminator is in the works and by that time I'm sure there will be yet another more improved 4K version of T2 with the extended cuts remastered. For me, I really like the 4K transfer, it wasn't perfect but I was satisfied with it. The film looked better than it ever has!

    the best home video release of this movie is the 2015 blu ray, it's literally the only release I know of on the format that has the original grain intact without DNR issues

    • @KevinStriker
      @KevinStriker ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2006 Blu-ray is a straight port of the D-Theater tape, but comes with its own compromises: The theatrical cut only, on a BD-25, with lossy audio, and no extras but the commentaries.
      And we didn't get the 2015 disc in Canada, unfortunately (just Skynet Edition licensed out to Alliance and Mongrel Media). Even with its own DNR woes, Skynet Edition looks great next to Vaseline Edition on the 4K.

    A $500 million box office from a $100 million budget would be considered a flop today.

    • @gabetrix
      @gabetrix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      not necessarily, 100 to make it, 100 to market it, even if the theaters take 100 more thats still 200 left over. The studio would be happy. However, with inflation now, 500 million worldwide would be be gigantic but so would a colossal budget.

    Awesome video! Very informative and entertaining look back on the different formats of T2. You should do more stuff like this. I love to see one on the Evil Dead films as there have been so many releases of them on various formats. Oliver Harper brought me here from his facebook link to this video, and I'm glad I gave it a watch. Brilliant from start to finish. I look forward to what you do with this in the near future. Thanks and have a good day!

      Thank you so much! It was a really long time putting this together. I was researching stuff back in December, and hit some technical issues with disc rips and such which delayed things a few weeks. There are some other films that do invite this form of analysis, but I'm going to ease off as this was indeed an intensive video to make.

    T2 is one of the greatest movie-going experiences of my life. It is arguably the greatest action movie ever made. Ive bought so many different copies of this masterpiece, including HD DVD and laserdisc. The Ultimate Edition DVD is probably the best release of any movie on home video... ever. There were so many special features and the menus were so cool and interactive. I also love the sneaky easter egg where you get to watch all three versions of the movie. Despite truly disappointing home video releases like the 4K Blu-ray - which i bought, T2 is arguably the greatest sequel ever made.

I like the ending in the Special Extended Edition DVD because it was a proper sendoff to the franchise after what Sarah Connor has been through. I tend to focus on the major format releases in these. The one time I decided to delve into more obscure formats for a recent Star Wars video, I ended up having to cut about one-third of my video out because there were no materials or captured footage to utilize to make the video purposeful. I put myself through a long wringler of research where a large chunk of just got thrown out and not mentioned at all in the final video.

    Brilliant video! I’ve got the skynet edition, and the 3D Blu-ray from here in the UK. I was severely disappointed with the new restoration, mainly due to the lack of Extended cut restoration and severe DNR. The 3D is good, but I can’t help going back to the skynet edition, true it has DNR but it’s not nearly as bad, has all 3 cuts looking exactly the same, and packed with special features. Which would you say is the best Blu-ray release?

    does anyone remember a special order/fan-club type of product that was offered with an early release of T2 on VHS? I remember my parents mailing in some sort of coupon, or calling a 1-800 number on the VHS box, to order some sort of special collectible that the studio offered with the home video release. • @MerolaC

    Magnificent video.
    I have to add something about the new 2017 Bluray (1080p one)
    They seem to have botched the contrasts because, to me, it seems they took the master for the UHD bluray, tonemapped it to SDR (Since the UHD is in HDR) and fiddled with the contrast, brightness and colors to make it look not opaque and made the colors more staturated.
    If you convert the UHD and tonemap it to SDR with FFMPEG, you will see what I mean.
    They also oversharpened it and that made a lot of halos, which are very visible on light post, fences, etc.
    I did Bluray for myself with added grain (since they DNR way too much), correct contrast and brightness and way less green. I'm working on getting it dehaloed, but it's the hardest part.
    I will upload a sample to my channel if you are interested to see it.

    • @ravensfilm
      @ravensfilm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, that doesn't surprise me considering how half assed the entire release was. It escapes me why StudioCanal mastered this the way they did. Cameron was clearly involved, but for a guy that's so high up on making use of new tech and expanding the cinematic experience, this doesn't reflect that mentality much at all. I think he cared more about the 3D conversion than anything else.

    • @MerolaC
      @MerolaC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will say that the poor people that worked on the discs were tied to what StudioCanal gave them.

    You glossed over the first DVD a bit quickly, the original THX DVD has the CDS theatrical surround cut audio mix which is best audio mix from all T2 home releases.

    • @ravensfilm
      @ravensfilm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're welcome to your opinion on that, but the vast consensus is very much standing in opposition regarding this as one of the worst 4K transfers out there. Since I've gotten my own 4K setup, I threw the UHD disc in, and it looked worse than the standard 1080p Blu-Ray. Some of the new 4Ks of Cameron's films are also getting hit with a lot of criticism as he's applied DNR and A.I. upscaling and refinement tools to pull away a lot of the organic looks of Aliens and True Lies. The Abyss looked pretty good for its theatrical re-release in December, but it wasn't perfect. It seems to be the one that got tinkered with the least.
