I gave up playing guitar 20 years ago, because no one of my very skilled guitar teachers could explain me the coherences of solo playing very good - watched a few of your videos the last few days and it's a revelation. back on the blues track now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Griff! Cheers from Germany!
Hi, I've been trying to learn how to play the guitar for 15 years. Sounds crazy but I've learned scales until I'm blue in the face but I've never been able to turn them into music. I've watched hours and hours and hours of videos on you tube and this is the best one I've ever found. You stayed on topic, your explanations are fantastic and you didn't drift into things that I can't understand. I always lose interest in those other videos and I get so frustrated. I'm watching this lesson for the fourth time tonight. NICE JOB and thank you so much. Doug Vargo Lake City, MI
Thanks, Doug, I'm so glad to hear this video, and maybe some others, have helped. It's really easy to get overwhelmed and the default response is that somehow more notes must be better. Just work with a small group at a time and focus on making music. If the greats can do it, so can you!
Your explanation about the way you presented the difference betwwen those two boxes and how to altered them on chord progression is fantastic. It really open up my understanding of my fretboard. Thank you very much for this great contribution...MIchel fron Quebec/Canada
Thanks Griff for an excellent explanation on a simple but vital element of paying in box 2 minor and major patterns. Recently been breaking down Albert King’s I’ll Play The Blues for you. For anyone wanting to do it start in second pattern bending Perfect 4 to 5! Reinforcing what Griff has said about creativity, just find out how many wonderful sounds Albert King got out of using the house pattern using 3 or 4 notes - fantastic! Simple but very creative and effective. Try it. There is a big difference I believe in using established patterns and scales. The former is for creating licks similar to BB Albert, Stevie etc, the scales provide passing notes, ring downs etc, which are also vital. Thanks again Griff for a great video!
Glad I caught this Griff. It filled in a missing spot in my mind. I always wondered how those two house patterns fit together conceptually. I am excited to use this new understanding. Excellent!!
Thanks so much. I have been looking on TH-cam for a very long time to find out how to locate the 3rd and 7th. This take me to a different leval so easy to fine everything.
Griff, I listen/watch a lot of instructional videos. I believe you are the reason that I want to play blues. You make it awesome. I started last year and I am addicted. If/when I need help I will look you up. Thanks for what you do.
Top notch instruction, thank you! Something I figured out but have never seen mentioned, if you drop pattern 2 in the minor pent down three frets, to the same position as pattern 1, you're playing the major pent. That makes it so easy to throw in major licks while remaining in pattern 1. Hope that makes sense
Thanks, Griff. After several years, I finally get it. Specifically, it was at the point when you explained when the root was on the B string, the 3rd is not in the box until you bend the B string. That alone switched on the light bulb. I haven't had an advance in understanding like that in a while. That was major.
Very helpful. I learned the 5 Blues scale positions, but it's difficult to remember for each chord. But since I know every note on the fretboard, your house pattern makes so much more sense to me and helps me actually play music rather than scales.
I totally agree that. Parmi la multitude d'explications sur les boîtes et le mélange majeur / mineur en blues, celle-ci est de très loin la plus complète et la plus claire. Great job, merci beaucoup !
Hi Griff. Your videos and emails have helped me to progress more than i thought possible. My videos are not as great as my practices without a camera but I am working on it. It is stage fright at this point.
Every time I check you out on the tube I learned something. One of the best teachers. Your voice says you sound like you come from Canada I just want to say hello and thanks from New York Long island specifically.
Very much appreciate your teaching style and the way you explain things. You teach in a way that is very relatable...at least to me. Thx much However, the video is blurry and difficult to watch; my guess its a consequence your inaugural use of Facebook live. I appreciate trying new ways to reach viewers & hope your experiment using Facebook live leads to better video definition in time. My comment comes a year after this video was posted so it likely outdated.
Really cool lesson, thank you very much! The thing I just can't seem to understand is: what does a lick have to contain so that it's playable over the I, IV or V chord, respectively? Is it really just the (minor or major) third which determines whether a lick fits better over the I, IV or V chord or is there more to it? Does a lick necessarily have to end on the root note of the I/IV/V chord?
Hey, Griff! I’ve been trying to play solo for years. I watched this video, picked up the guitar, and played was in my head for years! You are incredible! Thanks!! One question: what’s your name? I can’t figure out who you are, and you keep talking about going to bluesguitar something or other. I can’t figure out what you’re saying. Everything yiu say is clear except who you are and how to find it! Help!!
I often call it the house pattern. It's the root, 2nd, 4th, and 5th of the scale, plus you can reach down to the 6th. When you bend the 2nd you either make it major (whole step bend) or minor (half step bend.) Search my channel for "house pattern" and you'll find it.
@@bluesguitarunleashed thank you griff i didnt see your reply til now. I have learned so much watching your vids.. and im getting better at recognizing the major/ minor 3rd.....thanks to you... lol ..better late than never i guess. I get it now and i thank you...and i encourage anybody struggling , to watch this channel
hey griff can you explain to me again about the position of box 3 box 4 around that bb king major blues house pattern in a minor love your videos mate .bob from Australia .
Saw it call bb and albert box...i have a book or two, lost my book on the boxs patterns, gtr player and world mag spoke of it..from Mississippi delta down by the riverside..
this is a fun vid... and even funner (is that a word?) the 2nd or 3rd time through when it starts to sink in :) i can't stop playing this stuff and i don't know y? my brother told me "if u play that song one more time i'm gonna break that guitar over ur head"
This is confusing to me. I thought that what is referred to as the BB box involves four notes with one of the notes bend up to get the fifth note and that those notes are located in the area of 10th, 11th, and 12th frets. So, we are often told that BB King played mostly his notes over that area of the guitar neck, and that, therefore, he played mostly in the major as opposed to the minor pentatonic blues scale. Is that inaccurate?
His pattern would change depending on the key that he was in, so you can't really limit it to a single set of frets. In my experience this video represents the pattern BB used the most, where the index finger is on the root, and the bent note on the lower string gives a major or minor 3rd, and the upper string note gives the 6th of the scale. It's not quite a simple as saying he played mostly major or minor because he weaved them back and forth so effortlessly as he needed.
how does something minor become MAJOR by moving up-when we talk about these two boxes-and yet if you play e.g. key of A-You make it MINOR by moving UP! 3 frets?
This man is the best teacher I’ve seen in 15 years
Great lesson here! Many folks out there teach the BB box, but without the context or how it works, which are things I *really* appreciate!
i cannot tell you how much you have helped this 70 yr old beginer!
I,m 71.....I agree
I agree!
Here's to us 70 year olds jumpin' into lesrnin to play the blues with pick, fret and string! ME TOO!

I'm 60 and played over 30 yrs ago and just picking it back up and still hard but fun!

Saying what notes in the scale is a big help as w see it right away. So many just tell you to put your finger here then there. Great lesson.

Very helpful to me. Our HOUSE, is a very very very fine house.
Cool. Realized I use what you call the 4 note solo all the time - just helps make sense of it a bit more

I thought the BB box was in the major pent (house shape) and AK was minor and then putting them together makes an easy way to start combining them
Do you ever put the blues boxes on screen.

How long can you make 4 notes last for a video ?
You had blue guitar was that Gibison les paul?
Great lesson
I gotta say this and it's not an insult in anyway, but when you explain things it makes me think of Jeff Goldblum.
Shit I hear it too and now I can't unhear it. But great lesson and a cool guy
