    One thing I don't think a lot of people know is that you can record full songs including motion control. When you are playing them back you are free to change the sounds or tempo and adjust parameters or even play over the top. It's pretty amazing.

      You should Marie
      I'm not quite sure how to use Cubase because I use propellerhead reason 8 Essentials
      your setup section should reveal that it recognizes the keyboard most software does
      once you initiate it and click on the list of keyboards it recognizes the vr 09 should be one of the choices
      Like all the software out there it can be a pain in the butt but once it's been chosen you should be ready to roll

      It had another software update, but you can also upgrade the original version to this. The main thing is Rotary type 3 which is so good it's stopped me hankering after a Neo Vent. It also has wet/dry mix for overdrive and loading a file into the looper. You can get version 1.12 here: www.roland.com/uk/support/by_product/v-combo_vr-09/updates_drivers/

    i noticed a couple of things that might be misleading. 1) how would you apply the effects to individual layer? based on my knowledge it is always applied to both when it is dual or to upper when it is split 2) the level drawbar ONLY changes the level of hammond organ and not other instruments (pianos or synth)

    • @madbaker76
      @madbaker76 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also pressing 2 buttons of piano layers together does not bring up the menu. in this case the menu was already on the screen that is why it was shown.

      @@madbaker76 So I can't actually alter the envelope attack sustain release etc on the onboard synth sounds? It says that envelope adjustments can be made via the drawbars, can they be saved, can you make your own sounds? I used to own the original VR-09 but sold it due to limitations and horrid keybed. I can't remember to what degree I could adjust the sounds it was years ago.

    Does it have a lot of authentic 80s sounds? Like synth and drums? I plan to make some italo disco and synthpop with it. My current keyboard does have some nice sounds but not quite authentic. Also, I am most likely going to use it with a DAW anyway but does it have an on-board song sequencer and can you loop a recording? My current keyboard leaves a 4 second gap when repeating recordings, so if you want to make a 3 min track, you'll have to play for 3 mins instead of just looping parts. Thanks!

  • @vincentbumgarner
    @vincentbumgarner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I'm trying to cover tunes, the original of course switches sounds 4 times during the song. The problem I run into with my existing keyboard is that as soon as I select another sound, it kills the currently playing tone. How does this keyboard behave if you're holding something with one hand, and punch a different instrument with the other? Does it kill the sound, or keep playing the previous patch until you release the notes?

    • @sbutler860
      @sbutler860 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a very common problem among us gigging musicians (us gigging musicians! I played one gig in 2010 and I've got one next week!) The KRONOS, the big daddy of all Korg instruments, does it seamlessly, but mine is 88note and weighs a ton, and therefore cannot be transported to my gig next week, so I'm going to have to make do with the Korg Krome, a bit more expensive than this Roland. I would suggest if you're looking for Roland over Korg, the FA-06 which is about £160 more (probably around the same in $ - they usually are) and has a built-in SAMPLER!!! This sampler is about the easiest to use you're going to get with lots of buttons that light up. Indeed, if you like lots of lights on your keyboard, this is the one for you. It lights up all nice and feel-good red which gives you a warm glow while playing and makes you feel like you're playing an old friend. This VR-09 looks cheap build quality, and the FA-06 has a nice TECHNICOLOR screen. I would spend the extra wonga because you will get bang for your buck with the FA-06. Cheers! x

    • @sbutler860
      @sbutler860 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, by the way, to answer your question, I would imagine that whether a sound or not gets killed if you're playing a pad in the left hand would depend upon the polyphony, or the total number of notes or events the instrument can play at once. The FA-06 maxes out at 128 voices but it can feel a lot less than that if, for example, your left hand is composed of a choir that has a long cutoff, or strings for the same reason, and a complicated synth line in the right hand. Then it can feel like you've only got three or four notes, especially if you're holding down the pad with a pedal, then you're screwed. 128 voices seems fairly standard these days, so it really does depend on the complexity of the sounds you are using. Same thing if you've got complicated stuff going and then you want to select another sound. A piano with a massive reverb, choir and strings playing a G#m7+9b11#13 is not going to last long when selecting another sound, especially if, in the selection process, you accidentally hit another sound entirely and have to go back to the one you want. Then it's all gone. On that positive note - Cheers! x

    • @madbaker76
      @madbaker76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      based on my experience it would not kill your tone but be mindfull that it switches the master effects. for example you are holding a piano chord and switching to organ. next thing you know you piano still sounds but through the leslie...

    Small whinge about this video. Manically clicking and scrolling doesn't really demonstrate the keyboard as such. More useful (to me, at any rate) would have been some time spent on the basic sounds (first port of call) and an indication of how easy it is to store and recall your own performance settings. That said, it looks like a good budget all-round stage instrument, but would need to hear the in-built sounds first....

    I have the VK-7 and VR-09. The VK-7 is build like a TANK, with solid drawbars that will take years and years of abuse. Its Leslie is shit, but coupled with a Neo Mini Vent it will fool anyone (yes, anyone) that you're playing the real deal. The VK-09 has a better Leslie and a great all round sound (love the strings particularly). But roll if out to a gig and you'll find the drawbar knobs in every corner of the room. The shallow keyboard doesn't help either. But you know what? I love playing this as much at home as I love playing the VK-7 live. Just don't take it anywhere.

    Moving to the vr09b from an 88 key weighted keyboard, this keyboard feels really quite underwhelming, disappointing in fact. The black keys are match stick thin! Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but it's the main interface you interact with to make music, so it needs to feel inviting.
    The organ, electric piano and synth sounds are all excellent. I'm not yet convinced about the piano sounds, to my ears they seem a little harsh.
    Can't knock the brilliant functionality though or the current price.
    I just wish they keyboard felt better quality.
