If you don't want to pop any of your plastic pieces off, you can also run the power wire from the battery under the car along the brake line avoiding the exhaust.
Great tutorial! Is there a part (cover or dummy plug) to cover the hole where the wire harness would go if want to just install the MOPAR hitch receiver and bezel (say for a hitch bike rack), but leave the wire harness install for a later time?
Awesome work/video. Super helpful! Any idea what the towing capacity is on this trailhawk now? Does it get the around 4,000 lbs because the trailhawk has the same components as the "tow package"? (engine cooler, transmission cooler, same size breaks) Am I missing anything here? can't seem to find a credible answer.
From what I found out, other than the things you e mentioned, the larger V -6 enginel. Then you will be able to tow 4000 lbs with a 400 lb tongue weight. Other wise it 200- 2000. What I could never understand, none of the added equipment delt with beefing up the suspension, so how do you get an additional 200lbs tongue weight?
My Mopar setup was installed by the dealer at purchase (4 years ago) & I’ve only just realised the reverse wire/pin in the trailer socket doesn’t have any power to it. After watching this, I’m guessing it’s not something I can fix myself :(
My Grand Cherokee has a factory harness under the back bumper. You just need to plug in the appropriate harness connection for your trailer and then use AlfaOBD to activate the factory harness.
@@paul-stephendouglas5252 look up this Alpha OBD software. you need a special OBD connector that plugs in under the dashboard. The software is like $40 and the OBD connector is like $15. I found it works better with an android tablet. Then you need to use the software to activate the trailer lights option. or you can go to the dealer and pay them to do it. They wanted $250 for mine. But the AlphaOBD software is great for any other issues you might have in the future. It’s a way to hack into the computer without having to pay the dealer. There is a bunch of Alpha OBD tutorial videos on TH-cam. my friend just borrowed my android tablet and OBD connector to fix the air ride suspension on his 2017 Dodge ram pick up truck. 👍🏽
Appreciate the video. In the wire going to module, there's 1 blue wire that says to "go to the brake controller". Did you skip that step and not have a brake controller installed? Or what did you do with it?
The "brake controller" is an optional addition that would have to be purchased separately and is only needed if your trailer has its own brakes. so if you do not have a break controller the blue wire will not be connected.
The grand cherokee 2018 plus requires the computer to be programmed before its active. Does the 2020 cherokee need programmed or did your lights and brake controller work
This was installed on a 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk and we did not need to reprogram anything. I would not doubt a reprogram would be needed on the 2020 since it is a newer model but I am not sure I would conduct some research online first.
I have a 2015 Cherokee trailhawk and put the Mopar hitch receiver on. But have been somewhat confused on how much it'll tow. I've seen 2000lbs and then 4500lbs with a tow package. I even called a dealership and he was unsure. He was saying the same thing I looked up online. That's a 2500 difference. I don't want to try to pull 3500lbs if it's only 2k. That's a big risk.
Great video! I have power at the 7 way but no turn signals. Tried a trailer and no luck. It is mopar, but dealer installed. Any suggestions on why only power and no turn signals?
Thank you! And hmm that’s interesting. It’s definitely something with a connection issue. But if it was installed by the dealer I’d take it back to them! They sh out of fix that for free
@@RatchetWrenches ok cool, using your vid to trace connections. All good at blinkers and battery. Assuming either the switch or ground. So now I get to take off interior panel. Easier now I have this vid. Thank you!

Spoke to Jeep Dealer Yesterday, they said the cable had to be tied into some kind of module under the hood. And needed to be programmed to recognize the wires and make the lights and everything work from the back to the front.. Cost just for the programming was going to be $170 even though I said I was able to wire everything up to under the hood.. (taking the knowledge from your video and a couple others.) Said also that even if I was to go get the U-Haul hitch and wiring installed that I would still need to come to the dealer in order for their work to be completed.. Anyone know anything about this?
When using a hole saw on metal, take the saw of the arbor and just use the pilot bit to get started. That way, when you pop through with the pilot, the saw doesn't slam into the surface at full speed and bend the pilot. Then put the saw back on and put the drill on slow. Leaving it on high will heat up the metal and may even harden it. Your hole saw and pilot will last a lot longer and it will be easier to drill clean holes.
you said 41mm... there is no such thing ... a 1-1/2" circular is 38mm, and a 1-3/4" circular is 44mm... but even using the 1-3/4" circular, how the heck did you fit the 7-pin plug through the hole? It was not possible. Better to feed the harness FROM BELOW as you only need to feed smaller lines and then fit the rubber plug on nice and tight.
Bro I thought I was the only one that thought this till I found your comment. That 7 pin is like 50+ mm wide no way it's going through that hole. Currently feeding the wire through the bottom like you suggested
Harness is different for a 19, a lot more connections, ignition connections, ( you have to punch into the wire box)a blue wire (have not a clue what it's for) directions don't mention it. They show you pictures, nothing is explained. This video doesn't help with a 19 TH
By far the best in depth tutorial on this. I’ve only seen universal ones and not oem but wow excellent job man!
Thank you! We try to make it as easy as possible for everyone to follow along and save yourself some money by doing it yourself!
I totally agree!
You didn't have to drill a hole that black cover comes off and that's where you feed your wires through and where the grommet goes
By far the BEST tow hitch wiring installation video on TH-cam. Thanks for making and sharing.

I cannot find a definitive answer unfortunately but I believe it's either 4,000 or 5,000 lbs based on this one website I'm looking at
