The Colorful History of Wedding Gowns

  • Many of us envision a bride in a pristine white gown when we think of wedding attire, a symbol of purity and new beginnings. But did you know this hasn't always been the tradition? Dive into the rich tapestry of history, and you'll find that wedding dresses have donned a vibrant palette of colors across different cultures and eras. From deep blues symbolizing the Virign Mary to golden hues representing prosperity, historical brides often chose colors imbued with meaning and cultural significance. The white wedding dress, iconic as it may seem, is a relatively recent phenomenon in the grand timeline of nuptial celebrations.

    Fun fact: The dude Victoria married was Albert, a german dude. One christmas they let newspapers take pictures of the family in front of a christmas tree, wich at the time was a common christmas item in Germany. The picture made it's way throughout the globe, establishing the christmas tree as a tradition amongst the british empire. Victoria and Albert were influencers LONG before the Internet.

As a kid, I remember asking why she didn't wear a white dress, and she said she just doesn't look good in white, and I honestly adore that she chose to wear a dress she felt good in, rather than feeling pressured into wearing something just because of "tradition".

      Hindu weddings usually are expected to be vibrant so the bride wears colors varying from red, orange, yellow, green, pink etc. Only black or Grey colors are not worn by anyone, be it the couple or the Guests. There's many Hindu rituals that happen which are conducted by a Priest who recited Mantras. Now of course wedding customs vary in different parts of India but in a Tamil Hindu wedding, usually the husband ties the blessed nuptial thread around the wife's neck and then they walk around the sacred fire with held hands and then seek the blessings of the respective groom and bride's parents. Then many other austerities take place depending on the region. Usually the couple visits the temple after the above stated ceremony. Sometimes the wedding itself takes place in the temple. There's plenty of music. In the traditional style we have an ensemble playing the Nadhaswaram, Mridangam, Thavil etc where they play religious prayers and Carnatic songs. During the tying of the nuptial the fast piece called the Gettimelam is played and the priest chants a specific verse(Mangalyam Thanthunanena Mamajeevana Hetuna......). Also the nuptial is passed on to the guests for blessings before tying. And during the tying the guests shower the couple with flower petals. The bride wears a colorful saree with Gold jewelery while the groom wears a white Dhoti/Veshti and white Shirt. Also there's a pre wedding engagement called the Nichyadhartham where the families of the groom and bride exchange gifts and officiate the engagement with the priest. The invitations are then handed out after the to-be-couple exchanges the rings.

    • @nav_2709
      @nav_2709 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It's a very diverse thing and there are many more customs in the Tamil tradition alone, let alone from all states of India one can imagine how diverse it'd be. Another interesting fact is that the tying of the nuptial takes place at a said timing which is said to be the auspicious hour which may be in the early morning at 3-4 am sometimes or even on the afternoon depending on the day. In some Tamil styles, the husband and wife sit on a special swing as a metaphor to their togetherness for eternity.

      @KingAlphaOmega while growing up, my neighbors were Hindu. They had 3 children and all 3 had arranged marriages. The two oldest went back to India to meet their future spouse and get married. Then they came back to the US. The youngest child refused. He met someone, got married and took off. His parents were so upset and they didn't talk for years, but they mended their relationships. This was in the late 70's when they all got married. I was actually surprised that arranged marriages were still a thing but it still is going on to this day.
      I worked with a girl who was getting tired of never finding Mr. Right, she's Hindu also, and she finally told her parents that they can find her a husband and arrange everything. She did and so far she's very happy. She also had the most beautiful wedding attire, red and lots of gold!!

It was during the depression (in the southern USA), so they decided on a nice suit they could wear to church and to other more formal occasions. It was mostly white, but on the bodice were interwoven ribbons of deep, rich red. She even put something in the ceremony about the dress symbolizing love interwoven into the couple’s lives or some such. Her mother told me it was “just an excuse” to wear the red dress. In place of a wedding gift, we just asked everyone to come with a dish for everyone to share. It was perfect.....except for the little blip that the pastor turned out to be a multiple murderer. Rev. Arthur Schirmer. Memorable for all the WRONG reasons.....It just doesn't seem appropriate for God's speaker at the ceremony. I'm not sure how formal his relationship with God is. The color of traditional wedding dress for me is either red (from my Chinese ancestry) or gold (Javanese, because gold is considered glamorous nad luxurious).
    Western's white dress does become popular and a trend since I was a kid, but once or twice, you get non-white bride.
    And there's absolutely no taboo for women guests to wear white, even in the wedding where the bride wears white, because a wedding dress itself is already much 'wow' than any normal white dress guests can wear.
    So whenever I heard someone, usually in internet, saying "Not wearing dress is an universal common sense, everyone know it!", I feel like roll my eyes 😂

    • @pvp6077
      @pvp6077 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's common knowledge in Western culture where the white dresses originated. Sort of like it's probably common knowledge in your culture to not give chrysanthemums for a wedding but there's no taboo about that in the West.
      Every culture has it's standard practices, amd while it's not necessarily expected to learn all of them, it's usually assumed that when you take on another culture's practices you should learn a bit about them.
      If an American woman wears a kimono for her wedding, we expect her to prepare the proper accessories and for the belt to be tied properly. If she had her obi tied in the front or something people would definitely comment on it. Probably end up on a fb post about wedding fails.
      In western culture, white dresses are strongly associated with weddings. Anything can ne classified as "bridal" just by turning it white. Even casual clothes that are obviously not made for weddings can be viewed as wedding clothes just by someone implying it.
      White business suit instead of dress? "Courthouse wedding". Kpop idol in a white tracksuit? "Casual sporty wedding". White picnic dress? " Low key Beach wedding". White bikini? "Sexy beach wedding photos". Regular clothes with white veil? "Poor/low key but deeply in love wedding".
      Again, we shouldn't expect everyone in the world to know everything about Western culture, but this is a Western culture and history channel. I try not to go into cultural learning channels and roll my eyes at the idea they might assume a basic level of cultural knowledge or respect from their viewers. I don't see a reason to flaunt my ignorance and show my disrespect, I just try to learn.

    • @pvp6077
      @pvp6077 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, in case it didn't come out clearly, I'm not trying to compare Japanese kimonos to Chinese hanfu or anything else, I just used that example because it's just a common choice for Western exoticism and a frequently brought up cultural taboo commited by Westerners. If it was more common for Americans to wear saris I might have said something about improperly wrapping them or misusing henna or bindi. It's a big world but it's full of things to learn, about each other and everything else. You don't have to agree with it to try to understand it.

    back in middle school my friends and I were talking about dream wedding dresses. I blew their minds when I talked about wanting a red hanfu with gold and silver trim adorned with silk flowers. one of them told me I wasn't allowed to wear red because it was the sign of the devil. And I shot right back at her and said, "You'd be kicked out of a Chinese wedding for wearing white because those are funeral colors. No one is wearing white in a Chinese wedding, because people want life and longevity not death."

      For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
      John 3:16-21
      16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

      2 Peter 3:9
      The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
      Hebrews 11:6
      6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

    Queen Victoria was a trendsetter for A LOT of things. She introduced the Christmas tree tradition from Germany to the English-speaking world. I believe she was also responsible for the "gifts in stockings" tradition, as well as cookies, on Christmas. The notion of leaders going to ribbon-cuttings when a bridge or a public building is opened--she started that tradition too. Leaders having an official photograph, she launched that tradition as well. I'd have to do some research, but those are just a few of the "timeless traditions" that Queen Victoria introduced to English-speaking peoples that I can remember off the top of my head.

    1. Queen Victoria is ICONIC for that
    2. A big reason why it stuck is probably because it resonated with symbolism in the Bible. IN fact, I was never taught about Queen Victoria, but rather the purity and symbolism associated with it. In the Bible, the church is called the Bride of Christ. And marriage is supposed to be a picture of how Christ (the Bridegroom) loves and redeems His church (the Bride) by dying for us.
    In Revelation 19:7-8, we see that picture being fulfilled when the church is in heaven with Christ, pure of sin and made holy through union with Him.
    "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
