THANK you for mentioning that the Japanese vocals on Bowie's "It's No Game" were by one of the models on the cover of Sparks' Kimono My House (Michi Hirota)! Until just a few months ago I did not know about this myself after all these years. And bravo for ranking Scary Monsters... as high as you did! Truly among the very best!
Teenage Wildlife is one of my favourite songs ever, not just Bowie songs. I love the sound of this album, it really expands on the themes and production of the ‘Berlin Trilogy’ and acts as a fitting coda to his legendary period of 1969 to 1980. Let’s Dance is a cool album but the RCA years are perfect (in my opinion) 😊👍
Killer album. It has only grown in my estimation over the years. Ashes to Ashes bent my brain with that bizarre creepy video. The title track is awesome. I love that little girl and I'll love her til the day she dies. Fripp providing the "killer guitar sound." I tend to agree with the idea that this was the bookend of Bowie's classic period. From here he starts chasing the mainstream in the 80s and following trends instead of blazing his own unique trail. I miss that guy being around so freakin much. I can't get over it.
Scary Monsters is without doubt the album that has made the strongest impression on me ever. I discovered Bowie at 15 through the video for Ashes to Ashes which I did not see before late winter 1981. I was totally mesmerized by it. It was so incredibly much more adventurous and innovative than anything else I had seen at the time. I soon got the album and the first three months I think I must have played it on average twice a day. I simply couldn't believe how good it was. It was for many many years my absolute favourite album. I still think it is flawless though I now don't have any one absolute favourite album anymore.
I love it! The last 70’s album (and for some of us, the last of his classic albums for awhile) - I agree RE: Teenage Wildlife - incredible vocals. He adopted what I call an “expressionist vibrato” for some of this album (the softer parts of this song & also Kingdom Come) - it’s very wide and slow and loose, and in Teenage Wildlife, along with his ‘midwifes to history put on their bloody robes’ reedy tone, plus the higher range full throated climax - Weeee:) and Fripps guitar, bg vocals etc
You surprised the hell out of me by putting it at number 2: very nonchalantly ..... the way you were talking I thought it won’t make the top 5 ☺️ A nice deceptive delivery. Well played. Anyway, Fashion, It's No Game no. 1 and Ashes to Ashes are my favourites.
Good call, I'd definitely place it in my top 5. I doubt any future albums would place in my top 10 though, I love his '70s albums too much, I grew up with them.
This was the album that really got me into Bowie. First time I heard Ashes to Ashes I loved it and its probably one of my favourite Bowie songs. And yes I agree with you Larry Teenage Wildlife is such a great song and so underrated.
You did a nice job with your list. Bowie has so many amazing albums its hard for me to pick a top ten...let me try.. Ziggy Stardust Hunky Dory Station to Station Scary Monsters Alladin Sane Low Young Americans Lodger Diamond Dogs Man Who Sold the World Its funny seeing Man Who Sold the World as last because I still LOVE it.
My top 10 David Bowie albums 1. Aladdin Sane 2. Hunky Dory 3. Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars 4. Scary Monsters & Super Creeps 5. Diamond Dogs 6. Let`s Dance 7. The Next Day 8. Lodger 9. Heroes 10. Low
I love every song on Scary Monsters. It’s hard for me to choose between my favorite Bowie album, but I think Scary Monsters just barely gets the edge over Low. Heroes is at least number 3.
Maybe I need to give this one another chance. I love a lot of Bowie’s albums but I never got into this one. I like “Ashes To Ashes” and maybe another song but that’s all I’ve ever been able to enjoy from this album.
My thoughts: PRODUCTION: 10/10 MUSICIANSHIP: 10/10 LYRICS: 10/10 COVER: 10/10 TRACKS: It´s No Game No. 1 - 10 Up the Hill Backwards - 10 Scary Monsters and Super Creeps - 10 Ashes to Ashes - 10 FAVOURITE TRACK Fashion - 10 Teenage Wildlife - 8 Scream Like a Baby - 10 Kingdom Come - 6 LEAST FAVOURITE TRACK Because You´re Young - 8 It´s No Game - 10 AVERAGE: 9,2/10 OVERALL RATING: 10/10 or A+
You have Low on your ranking list as released in 1976. It was released in 1977. although very early in 1977 ( January 14th). ps, I love your videos and I agree with most of your rankings.
Yea, Station to Station was released in 76, then he released two albums in 1977 - first Low (early 77), and then Heroes towards the end. He didn't release an album in 1978, but it's basically Heroes.
Great Album. Scary Monsters sounds like the summation of his journey through 70's, and what a great run it was. I think losing Eno made this album sound much more focused. I read somewhere that he didn't tour on this record because of John Lennon's murder not long after it was released, choosing to stay at home with his young son.
Scary Monsters, Ashes to Ashes, Fashion, Teenage Wildlife and Scream Like A Baby is a run of five fantastic songs. Love "It's No Game (Part 1)" + "(Part 2)" as well. Not a bad song on the album.
Side 2 is fantastic, side 1 is even better ! Love the title track, love It's No Game (with Sparks woman) love Ashes To Ashes, (a rare number 1 single here in the UK) after this it was all downhill really till 1.Outside in 1995.
I really didn't get 1.Outside when it came out and didn't listen to it much after that. Recently gave it another shot and it's pretty awesome. Still not one of my favorites of his, but certainly very creative and a worthy addition to the canon. Too bad he didn't finish the trilogy that was planned for it.
Thanks for the video Larry ! Here is the link for my ranking of David Bowie songs: www.waheffect.com/post/david-bowie-songs-ranked-worst-to-best I find this album fabulous. Bowie ends a glorious decade started with Hunky Dory on a really high note. 1) Low 2) Ziggy Stardust 3) Young Americans 4) Heroes 5) Scary Monsters 6) Diamond Dogs 7) Hunky Dory 8) Aladdin Sane 9) Station To Station 10) Space Oddity 11) The Man Who Sold The World 12) Lodger 13) David Bowie 14) Pin Ups
1. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust 2. Hunky Dory 3. Station to Station 4. Low 5. The Man Who Sold the World 6. Diamond Dogs 7. Young Americans 8. Aladdin Sane 9. Heroes 10. Lodger 11. Scary Monsters and Super Creeps 12. Space Oddity 13. Pinups 14. David Bowie That's my preference but it's a toss up really.
Not a popular opinion here so don't throw rocks at me. I don't particularly care for track #1, but the remainder of side one is incredible. Side two opens with a cool one in Teenage Wildlife. Scream Like A Baby is excellent. However the rest of the side doesn't do a lot for me. So Scary Monsters to me is slightly front-loaded. Still it's among Bowie's best. I'd rank it on par with Heroes, but not quite as good as Low and Lodger. There, I said it. I feel better. This ranking exercise from 1970 to 1980 is difficult!
Great video

Larry,I love the line ashes to ashes funk to funky,we know Major Tom's a junkie on Ashes To Ashes, the man was brilliant. Bob.
Singing Ashes to Ashes alone in my room is a mood Larry

@@catsofsherman1316 1.Outside is one of my favourites, also the Excerpts From Outside vinyl is a good one to get, it's a bit more 'condensed'

Oh no....don't say it's true!
Side one of this album is AMAZING.
Side two is absolutely awful. 4 long boring tracks I can't tell apart + it's no game again but not as good
haha nvm you did! rock onnn
