Wow! Larry you totally agreed with my rating of Lodger"! I've always thought it the best of Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy" albums. What I like best is that Bowie had finally gotten the Eno inspired instrumental tracks out of his system and he was ready to get back to albums with two sides of short catchy music. My favorite track is "Look Back in Anger" which is an epic track. Dennis Davis drums are unreal. So good they are mind blowing every time I listen. It's one of Bowie's most overlooked and under rated albums in my opinion!

Bowie listed "Fantastic Voyage" and "Repetition" as two of his favorite songs.

Number 2. Wow. I love Lodger a lot. I would rate it higher than average Bowie fan, but probably not quite that high. A lot of great tunes and great performances on that album.

When I started collecting Bowie this was one I avoided for a long time and only bought towards the end of completing my collection. I guess because for me there was no big song or selling point. I’d always thought it was one of his lesser albums. Then I heard it and boy was I wrong. I love Lodger.

The Lodger cover was inspired by the Roman Polanski film 'The Tenant'......I love this album....Look Back in Anger is my favorite track

Lodger is right up there with his best, been a fan since '69 and bought all of his albums on release since Hunky Dory in '71. The 2018 release is worth checking out as a comparison listen, it's not better but sits alongside the original, similar to The Beatles Abbey Road 50th/1969 version.Lodger 2018 is now available without having to buy the box set (in the UK at least) also I've always thought the front cover was the side that shows Bowie's lower half !

I agree very much that this LP is really underrated but it is not my absolute favorite. I also think that though underrated, his most sadly underrated LP is Space Oddity. It saddens me one of his very best LPs with so many great songs and no weak ones is not more loved and while this Album is not as good, song for song; it still has some of David's best work. Boys Keep swinging, Look Back in Anger and DJ being amongst my absolute favorite songs of his. It is a more difficult LP than many as you say Larry but nevertheless one of his most interesting and underrated. There are no bad tracks on it either. And that matters too!

  • @johnheppenstall4904
    @johnheppenstall4904 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The original release had the cover the other way round, so you saw his feet and the postcard at first view. By the way, Fantastic Voyage and Boys Keep Swinging share the same chord structure. You can actually sing the lyrics to one over the backtrack to the other!

I love this album too. I'd rank it somewhere between No 4 - No 10. Hunky Dory and Scary Monsters would definitely rank above it, in my opinion. I love Fantastic Voyage, Red Sails and Look Back in Anger, they are Bowie gems. The rest of the songs are well worth a listen too.

The best of what is called The Berlin trilogy and of the three, the least talked about. I think it's a lot more Bowie than Eno which suits me fine. Top 5 for me

    Lodger is awesome indeed!
I remember buying it when it came out and I wasn’t impressed at all. But after your review I gave it another two listens and the penny dropped at last!
First I thought it was a string of weird songs, bit now I think it’s another Fantastic Voyage through Bowie-land.
    Thanks for the wake-up call👍

This is one of my favorite Bowie lps. It’s great from beginning to end. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is the best album he put out for the rest of his career. Scary Monsters loses momentum on side 2. Just my opinion but everyone knows I’m right.

  • @zsatsfm
    @zsatsfm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I wouldn't rank it so high, but i agree with a lot of what you said Larry. Fantastic Voyage is utterly superb (in my Bowie Top 10) and i love Red Sails, Boys Keep Swinging, Look Back In Anger, African Nite Flight and Repetition. However, i think Move On and Yassasin are not quite as strong, and Red Money i never got into, it was later recycled as an Iggy Pop song which sounded better i thought. Great review Larry.

Lodger is a big favorite. As you said, in the beginning I liked Heroes or Low better, but this has changed. Actually not a single weak track on the album, although I like DJ and Boys Keep Swinging less than Heroes or Sound and Vision. Anyway: Great album!!

Happy to see that you have ranked Lodger as high as you did! Then I had a thought, perhaps as a Zappa fan your opinion may have slightly/partially been boosted by the wonderful guitar presence of Adrian Belew on Lodger. Belew had also made great sonic contributions to Zappa's Sheik Yerbouti album earlier that same year. He is also guitarist on Bowie's live album, Stage (not to mention a member of the 1980's incarnation of King Crimson). Adrian's solo at the end of "Boys Keep Swinging" is deliciously insane! If you want more Bowie/Belew and you are not familiar with this song, PLEASE look for "Pretty Pink Rose" from Belew's Young Lions album. Adrian Belew is an under-rated and overlooked guitar virtuoso and he shines on Lodger.th-cam.com/video/wDWPyVCT0X4/w-d-xo.html

Out of the Berlin Period .
    Love Lodger.
    Adrian Belew is on it.
    Out of the Three.
LOW and Hero's have the Edge.
    Robert Fripp Shines on Hero's.
Brian Eno influence is less on Lodger.
    I love that period.
    Scary Monsters as well.
    I seen BOWIE way back.
    Station to Station Tour.
    Thin Duke period.
    That's Bragging rights. Lol.
    I have huge Bowie Collection.
    Understandably LOU REED as well.
    Another Story.
    Lodger is real 😎 cool.

My least favourite of the Bowie/Eno Berlin trilogy, but still a great album. That said, it did take a couple of listens before I really got into this one. Only slightly less good than Low and "Heroes," which are both masterpieces in my opinion. Those two each had more of an overall mood and I love the ambient instrumentals on them. Lodger on the other hand has Fantastic Voyage, Yassassin, D.J, Look Back In Anger and Repetition as my favourites, with the rest being quite good as well.

It is not among my favorites. Much is due to the production which I don't like and I know Bowie/Visconti were not happy with. Though lots of great songs and maybe the most idea-dense of all Bowie albums.
