FORGING A DOUBLE BLADE AXE

  • Taking on the massive challenge of forging 24 Railroad Spikes into a double blade viking axe. It starts by forging down the head of the spike into square bars. Then the spikes are bundled together and forge welded into a large solid chunk. The piece is now forged thin where the eye of the axe will be shaped into a half round. Both sides of the axe are now brought together and carefully forge welded together making a complete axe. A high carbon piece of leaf spring is added to the cutting edge of the axe to get a better cutting edge on the viking axe.
    My name is Timothy Dyck. I got hooked on blacksmithing when I was 13 years old. I quickly realized that in order to keep blacksmithing I needed money to buy costly supplies, so I started making small items and selling them at the local farmer markets. The farmer markets turned into craft shows and craft shows turned into custom projects. Right out of high school I had the opportunity to apprentice under a blacksmith, where I worked with him for four years. We did projects for some of the most prestigious houses around the rocky mountains and were apart of many large public sculptures. I learned many valuable lessons while working under his training, but the desire to set up my own shop and go out on my own was always something I dreamed about.
    So in 2013 I started setting up my full time blacksmith shop out of BC, Canada making custom projects and products like railings, gates, lights, stairs, fences and all the many blacksmithing tools required to keep the blacksmithing shop running. I love what I do and this is my dream job. I enjoy showing you what's going on in the blacksmith shop through the lens of a camera and would love to have you along for the ride as I live out my dream of being a blacksmith in the 21st century.

    • @jvmiller1995
      @jvmiller1995 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Pentex me too. I turned a handle for a sledge once but I left two spots for my hands one low and one high where you grab. then I off set my center on the handle and turned oval shaped handles with some little groves for grip where the handles go. I swear you could patent it as it made such a nice handle and have good control. everyone thinks a lathe will only spit out round items but if you know what you are doing you can do a lot.

    Beautiful job, really nice to see a rr spike billet like that. The great disadvantage to perfectly round handles like that is that it makes it impossible to intuitively index the cutting edges without looking at the index of the blade every swing making mistrikes and accidents highly likely

    I hate RR knives because they are not high carbon so I am glad to see the leaf spring. Very cool making the two sides and forge together. Only real dislike is a round handle that will twist when it strikes as you seen. You need to leave some material where your hands go that's not round

    That is more like a large tomahawk than an axe because of the round handle,because it is harder to control

  • @joshveer1138
    @joshveer1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only Problem With this, The Handle Is Round. Meaning You Have No sense Of Orientation Or Edge Alignment. Any Edged Weapon Should Have An Oval Like Handle To Do 2 Things, Give You Sense Of Orientation, And Aid In Edge Alignment By Not Twisting In Your Hands. As Im sure You Noticed With The Round Handle TheAxe Will Tend To twist And Roll When Swung, My Suggestion, Take Something, A File, Mill, Drawknife, Whatever You Have And Shave Down The 2 Sides Of The Handle And Smooth That Out Afterwards, Itll Feel And Perform Better. Other Than That Awesome Axe! Really Surprised At The Railroad Ties too.

    I really enjoyed that. Your photography has reached a whole new level of sophisticated cine drama and I even like the music. However, I don’t know if you use that hammer just to set my teeth on edge or you keep those rolled edges for sentimental reasons, but I’d really appreciate it if you could dress the face. Not just because it really bothers me, but a beginner may get the impression that a hammer face like that is safe and ok to use. I’m sure Martin would agree even if you didn’t include him in this production. Oh, and the handle is spectacular, if you want to hang a curtain but a round axe handles is almost as cringeworthy as the hammer face. Keep up the good work.🍺🇦🇺

  • @thomasarussellsr
    @thomasarussellsr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My only issue with this beautiful axe is the round handle. This would make it almost unusable in battle. How do you orient/index the tool in a battle situation? Do you ask your opponent to wait for you to line the blade up for a hit? Handle should be somewhat oval at a minimum. Longer in line with the blades so your hands can control the direction of hit. Of course a smack with the broadside would still stun your opponent, but if your looking for a kill with quick recovery for the next foe...
