This brings back fond memories. I stayed overnight in a house in Savaii, at Asau, not too far from the airstrip in 1987. Don't ask me where! The occupant was a Kiwi engineer who was working under contract. He was showing signs of going troppo, despite having what I considered then, and do now, an idyllic life. He was due to return to New Zealand within the next 18 months and I wondered how well he would deal with the transition. He was seeing a lovely Samoan lady, with her father's permission, which I assume kind of implies marriage at some point? So I don't know what happened there. Anyway, in the evening we went to the Vaisala hotel, which was just magic. Full of people - locals and tourists and people who seemed to have been washed up on the beach frontage and just stayed!
The hotel got severely knocked around by one of the major hurricanes, but from what I've see recently has made a successful comeback.
The following day we did a circuit of the island - almost - until we realised we were going to miss our flight back to Upolu. Our host, being familiar with the area, did a shortcut across country along tracks that were barely there until in a screech of gravel we arrived barely in time for the plane. Legend!
This tour covers spots I never went, or if I did have forgotten what they looked like, though I do remember there being far fewer houses, certainly no expensive ones that I glimpsed here. Magnificent place, though not without its problems, such as deforestation, which back then I only glimpsed, but more recently seems to have been threatening the ecology severely.
Anyway, this is a great video. I'm unlikely to return, so things like this are invaluable as virtual experiences. Fa'afetai tele lava..

My mother and grandmother had left Asau in the 1950s, and my Grandma, in 1973, to New Zealand, then in 1981 we migrated to Australia. Both my mother and Granmother are interned at the Beenleigh Cemetery for over two decades now. During the 1970s every Xmas my mum, my sister and I would travel to Asau, in Utuloa, to visit our family. At Lopaoo Pagia's house. My Grandma's house was in Utuloa and was left abandoned in 1973. The house foundations remains. I visited in 2018 and saw the overgrown grass and vegetation over the volcanic rock foundations of the entrance steps to her old house. It is thick with brush, and inaccessible. Most of our family now die and are buried in the Beenleigh Cemetery, South of Brisbane. We are the descendants of the late Nive Tolua Tufuga, Passed away in 1953, nee Nive Pagia Lopaoo, from Utuloa, Asau. Thank you for sharing. At 8 mins and 16 seconds the house on the right is my grand uncle Lopaoo Pagia and his Ta'ei's house. My Grandma, Fuifui Tolua Tufuga, Lopaoo Pagia's half baby sister, she is the youngest of the siblings, was behind Lopao'o Pagia's house. At 9min in the video at teh turnaround point, the land all along there is owned by my Great Grandma, Nive Tolua Tufuga, nee Pagia Lopao'o. Her only son, Lopao'o Pagia, my Grand Uncle, lived and is buried in Utuloa. This is my maternal ancestral land of my mother. We have lived in this part of Samoa for 3,000 years since we arrived from South East Asia as the original Austronesian settlers of Samoa and to become known as Samoans. Where the old saw mill is and the Asau Airstrip and the Asau Port, is on our ancestral homeland in Utuloa, Asau. From 7 min 30 seconds till 9min and 20seoncds....all that land is my ancestral homeland. From 7min onwards till 9min 30 seconds is the realm of the Sa Tufuga aiga of my family's territory!
