DIY Folding Hitch Bike Rack

  • In this video we show how to build your own folding, hitch mounted bike rack to carry up to two bikes. I built this rack out of an existing cargo carrier and two Yakima Raptor racks. It enables you to carry bikes using the 2” hitch receiver on your vehicle. The bikes can be mounted/carried without needing to remove the front wheel and the bike rack folds up when not in use. This is a great alternative to spending $500+ on a commercial-off-the-shelf bike rake (the total project cost me approximately $45 and 11 hours of labor).

Funny thing, I am working on a bike rack and am using a cargo carrier and wood like you did. I don't have a roof rack though, so I need more inventiveness. Can't you center the roof rack in the carrier by bolting a 6x2 to the sides of the frame and bold the roof rack to it?
Store bought bike racks are rip offs. $500 to $900 dollars for something they make for 75 dollars to transport a bike that cost less than the rack.

Nice. I am planning to do a similar setup using a cargo carrier to use it with our 2 electric bicycles.
Did I missed it? Why did you not mount the bicycle rack more towards the center of the carrier to have less front wheel hang off?

Hey Chris just a tip, don’t wear gloves when using a drill press. If the bit grab a hold of that gloves it will do more damage than you not wearing gloves. Nice project and you should be proud. I hate paying for an overprice bike rack as well. Enjoy your van.

You are right, I don't understand why they are so expensive.

Just a heads up that you should avoid grinding aluminum parts on a bench grinder like that - there is an increased chance of the wheel failing (exploding) when it gets loaded up with aluminum dust.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the heads up, I wasn't aware of this. I'm heading to the garage to clean up the wheel right now :)

I have a cargo rack like that and the same Yakima racks. Do you think that 4 bikes would fit on the cargo rack? I need to haul 4 bikes behind my 5th wheel, and don't have a receiver hitch on the back of the rv, but it has a cargo rack like that already

Maybe you can look at the Tour de France support vehicles and the roof racks they use. I think they get anywhere from 8-10 bikes on top of cars with a lot less roof area than you have.

    • @ChristopherLum

That is a great idea, I will take a look. I've got the roof rack almost complete and I'll let you know how it goes shortly.

Thanks Christopher, have you looked into the bike mount adaptor they had for that cargo rack?

Hi Rick, no, I wasn't aware there was a bike mount adaptor. As you saw in this video, I ended up making my own 😀. I have another video focusing on the cargo carrier at th-cam.com/video/7y8IdKmfqeU/w-d-xo.html . I also use the RakAttach swing away hitch adaptor with my bike rack th-cam.com/video/g5EULqpJCQ8/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for watching!
