    Thanks Brett!
    We are going to have to watch this a couple more times because there are several nuggets of knowledge sprinkled through there.

    Here in northern ohio we just did a couple splits today. I hope it works out for us. Good to know others in the same climate are doing the same.

    Great video was wondering about this very question. I'm in the thumb of Michigan. My hives are booming was thinking about doing a walk away split tomorrow. Don't think I should now. Thanks for the advice. New sub:)

    Thank you so much for that wisdom! Just as an aside, do you mind holding the camera higher so we can see your handsome face? All we can see is your outline when the bright sky is behind you. I would love to see your expressions when you are educating us... Many thanks to you for taking the time to make them. You are a treasure!

    Very helpful. I made a split on July four with required resources. I counted it from July 2nd because they might use even 3 days old egg. They would cap the larvae on day 8 - either way from 7/2 or 7/4 the Queen will emerge in 16 days, so I checked my nuc box today and found 10 capped queen cell. I am planning to use 2 sets of queens in each box that makes 5 hives. As I have a very strong parent hive that will fulfill your suggested 5 frame resource to survive the split. I live in south east Iowa and parent hive has a lot of activity going on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    How many frames (brood vs honey) in your nucs for a successful overwintering? Do you add any insulation on your nucs for the winter months?

    Hi Brent, I love your videos, informative, and just straight foward. I watched this video because I want to make splits with 2 of my hives, I'm in NY. I wanted more hives with their genetics. They're great bees, gental, calm, builders and fly in the rain and overwinterd well. It didn't dawn on me till the other day they're 2017 queens. However I decided it was probably to late. Well one hive swarmed on me tonight at 6:30pm in the rain. Caught them, but now what? Will they have enough time to build for winter, or did they just seal their fate, swarm and colony left behind? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank Tammy

    Fellow Michigander here! About 120 mi east of your location. I have a new beekeeper question related to splits. One of my two hives went queenless back in mid June. I attempted to have them raise a new queen with a borrowed frame of new eggs & brood from my second hive but unsuccessfully. My one hive is going strong as a single brood chamber hive. I want to have at least 2 hives going into winter. Should I make a split from this? If so, should I buy a mated queen or try and let them raise their own queen? I'm thinking of going the mated queen route because I also have new equipment and would like more drawn comb for next year. Thoughts? Great videos by the way!

      Buy a mated queen and feed a ton.

    kinda off subject how long can you go past the exparation date on mite away quick strips ? i just got some getting readu for fall they expire jan 2020

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not too too long, the wicking material around the strip disintegrates and the strips become harsher on the bees.

    Just come across your channel and live near Tawas. I'm a new beekeeper and just got 2 10 frame hives the other day and the guy told me i could probably split them. I've ordered to 10 frames box's and frames so i could at least have 2 brood boxes on each. But I'm thinking hard about splitting them because i would like more. Do you think i could be safe doing a walk away split? (From what i know the one without a queen would raise a new queen? Am i right? )

    Hello, I have little resource nuc I keep just in case something happens to one of my queens in my other hive. Well she had a tragic accident. I live in Central MA. Will the nuc still be able to make a queen (eggs are there) and will she have any chance of getting mated? I like having the reserve and she was a great queen. Thanks.

  • @Thatfishguy05

    I did a walk away split a few days ago. Should I worry about it or do I need to do something for them? I’ve been giving all my hives a small pollen patty and the smallest hives are getting syrup right now.

    • @BKBees

      Feed them and be prepared to give them a frame of brood in August if necessary.

    How far apart do I put the hives if I do a walk away split?

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't have to be far apart. Just be aware that the foragers will return, check both portions a few hours after making the split to see if the populations have shifted greatly.

    I have 1 hive an want to split it an have 10 hives eventually... is this doable?

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but you really have to stay on top of the mites and not get split happy. One hive into 3 the first year, treated for mites 3 or 4 times each and heavy as hell before winter. You'll come out with 2 or 3 if you follow that advice perfectly, you can then split those each into 3, and so on. Trying to do more than that, especially as a beginner, is really tough.

      Ahh, I have doubles and singles, but I was splitting those hives down to singles, not running all of the bees into singles.
