This Non-Euclidean Game Will Destroy Your Brain! - Hyperbolica

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 22 พ.ค. 2024
- Hyperbolica First Look - a unique game by codeparade. What if we lived in a world that behaved nothing like our own? In non-Euclidean hyperbolic space, squares don't have 4 right angles, parallel lines don't stay the same distance apart, and the circumference of a circle is no longer pi times the diameter. This may turn your brain into soup.

Tried to paint this one in a good light, but this ended up being more of a showcase than a game unfortunately. Still a neat concept though.
cool

Yeah i guess that’s a problem i worried abt
That’s what I was concerned about. Maybe I’ll get it, but kinda doubt it
Hopefully more games are made in this system of world building
I’m excited for all the puzzle games, especially the “I like clicking on polls, it’s like bubble wrap”
The people might be asking for it but are we sure it will do well on the algorithm?
@@thegwangster9097 I mean, who doesn’t like bubble wrap
I clicked on it but changed my vote because I actually wanted to cast one
The real puzzle is figuring out what that game is
that's my favorite game, hope he plays it soon
“So the trick is to just rapidly buy and sell boats, you’ll never get upset”
My new favorite quote, ever
so THATS what all the bloons players are doing
sounds like something saul goodman would say
the puzzle at 3:47 involves a property called "holonomy", it's the property of space that involves "creating rotation" through normal movement, follow the path of a five sided square and you'll find yourself rotated a full 90°, even though no percieved rotation is experienced. this effect is present in both hyperbolic and spherical geometries
edit: yes, I said five sided square, those exist in hyperbolic geometry (5-90° angles), and three sided squares can exist in spherical geometry
Reading that hurts my head
A 5 sided square?
That doesnt exist
Its called a pentagon
@@lazygamez7280 It does in hyperbolic geometry - one robot said that when you have to make not 4 but 5 right turns to end up where you started, i.e. - 5-sided "square". In spherical space its the opposite - 3 turns for a "triangular" "square". Watch the devlogs of the game to a get better understanding straight from the dev. :D
@@lazygamez7280 Numberphile has a succinct video on it, fittingly titled "5-Sided Square". It doesn't quite explore hyperbolic geometry by name, but the principles are similar.
@@lazygamez7280 Somebody just got Dunning-Kruger'ed.
Not meant to be offensive btw, just funny
HyperRogue is a traditionally roguelike with non-euclidian geometry, it makes each enemy encounter basically a puzzle when u enter new areas because your practically avoiding getting check mated
But that is very different, mainly because you move on tiles so it feels much less weird.
Fun fact: an Apeirogon is a polygon with infinitely many sides. In "normal" geometry, an Apeirogon is just a line.
A line or a circle depending on whether you’re zoomed infinitely in or out
fun fact: apeirogon is the name of my firstborn son

I’ve been following this game since a demo video was posted a few years back.
Good to see all the progress in the game and that it’s appeared on your radar.
this game is extra cool because you can see the game dev logs and the guy that made them is pretty damn cool too
Same!
This must have been both amazingly interesting and incredibly stressful to code
yeah, there are devlogs about how they made it by codeparade.
I've been watching the Dev logs for this game for years, and now one of my other favorite TH-camrs is playing it!?
I didn't even know it fully came out yet.
too bad adventure games disgust him... idk why I got a little upset at that lol. Seeing the dev logs makes me really really appreciate the time and effort and skill that went into making the game. But also tyler is allowed to not like a genre of game lol. i am confusion
That's exactly what I thought... was a bit sad when he said that.
Didn't he say that he thought this was gonna be game of the year lol
@@TraeKryzer he could have been less harsh about it :(
a simple "its cool game but not for me" would have been good enough
@@pvic6959 he played supraland so he doesnt exactly hate adventure games. I think he dislikes the lack puzzles or strategy. The game appears to also have neither a story line nor main goal.
7:15 the actual order is milk, then cereal then bowl
no matter what the bowl goes last
I don’t even have notifications on but somehow got here within 13 seconds
I refreshed as it was posted ended up here in 0 seconds didnt type fast enough for first though🙁still tied for third at least!!!😀
You are the chosen one
Bruh same, but 30 minutes
"I might be a milk-first person myself. Step 1, pour milk. Step 2, never pour the cereal because I don't eat cereal and only drink milk."
Legendary quote there
I'm table-first
If you liked this, you should definitely check out HyperRogue too!
I've seen a few other commenters go in-depth into what it is, so I'll keep myself brief, but what it is is basically a roguelike using hyperbolic geometry, with tons of different lands and orbs and enemies and so on. The hyperbolic gimmick means you can manipulate movement patterns not possible in euclidean geometry and it's just a ton of fun
It good

That ring you see around you is infinite distance away, which is why you can't look past it. There is nothing past it.
You are thinking of spherical geometry.
@@virtuallyreal5849 No I'm not, spherical geometry by definition has finite space in it. Nothing can be an infinite distance away.
This is something like (and probably *is)* the Poincare model for hyperbolic space, a projection of hyperbolic space into a Euclidean space (so that we can actually view it) which renders infinite distance away as appearing a finite distance away, displaying the universe as this sort of disk around you.
@@alansmithee419 In spherical space infinity is the distance of the plane from the north pole, I believe. There is nothing beyond that. Euclidean geometry and Hyperbolic geometry are infinite, only infinity is infinity away.
@@virtuallyreal5849 If you project a sphere onto a plane the North pole will be projected infinitely far away, but that has literally nothing to do with spherical geometry. There is no plane in spherical geometry, I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.
"Beyond the north pole" is an entirely reasonable place to go. The Earth is a pretty solid representation of 2D spherical geometry - does it take you infinite time to walk to the north pole? Can you cross it? The answers are the same in spherical geometry. You can walk past the North pole as many times as you like, and you can come back to the north pole just by continuing to walk in a straight line from there - and if you keep walking you can cross the North pole in the same direction as many times as you like. The world loops back on itself.
I'm fully aware Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces are infinite. What I'm saying is that that disk that *appears* finitely far away due to a projection of hyperbolic space into Euclidean space is actually infinitely far away. I'm not using some obscure mathematical definition of "infinity," I mean it entirely literally. If you want to travel to that edge you can't, because it's infinitely far away. Hyperrogue uses the same projection.
The north pole is the apparent center point of this a spherical plane. It is always up away from the plane which appears to wrap around it. Yes, hyperbolic space does appear finite because of the projection, but there is plenty of stuff past it.
I had a headache after I went through Hyperbolica, it's fascinating how much a person can navigate through any environment with the simplest knowledge they have (and a map). It's a shame it didn't feel natural, but I guess that was expected.
Cereal first having the superior siege weapon truly proves their cause
just so you know Tyler: While non-Euclidean is a way to describe the geometry of the game hyperbolic is the more accurate descriptor. The essential logic of hyperbolic geometry is that parallel lines always diverge away from each other. which stands in opposition to another kind of non-Euclidean geometry Elliptic Geometry where parallel lines always converge
Hyperbolica includes both hyperbolic and (double) elliptic geometry though.
Check out hyperrogue! It's a turn-based treasure collecting hyperbolic strategy game. The tutorial isn't great, and I'm not sure you could make a long series about it as it's more of a stream game than a youtube game, but I'm sure it's worth taking a look at.
I've been watching the devlogs for this game for a while now, I think the way dialogue was implemented was really cool, they basically scripted a new language to do so if I remember correctly. Not even a minute in yet, but I'm excited to see how far the game has gootten!
The fact the two armies in the Snow realm are arguing not only on what to put first when making cereal(which the answer would be bowl, because how you gonna eat the cereal without a bowl) and also if catapults or trebuchets are better. For the second one, I must agree with the cereal first army, due to the fact trebuchets are more powerful than catapults anyway
actually the answer is table, why would you eat cereal without a table
@@mathguy37 no the answer is a planet. You need to make a planet before putting a Table before butting a bowl.
@@LineOfThy no you need to make a solar system before putting a planet before putting a table before putting a bowl
@@mathguy37 no you need a galaxy to make a solar system before putting a planet before putting a table before putting a bowl
@@LineOfThy no you need a universe to make a galaxy before putting a solar system before putting a planet before putting a table before putting a bowl
I’ve been following this for ages but waiting to see someone play it to buy it for myself! I’m glad to see this video!
Dude I've been keeping up with this for so long. Glad it finally released. Tbh, I thought it would be eternally pushed back
Love the content, the background is nice. You should make a poster for your merch with a collage of all the games that help grew your channel
Rip red curtain?
I've been following this game's development for so long, it's actually crazy that it's finally out!
I always thought of hyperbolica as a game by that one youtuber, so it was weird hearing about it from others, as it became actually better known
Jumping higher up doesn't only not allow you to see farther, but it makes the world look smaller than it really is when you're high up.
I’ve been hype for this game ever since codeparade started making devlogs about it. So glad it’s out!
I watched dev logs on this a couple years ago!!!! Awesome to see it's finished
i find it kinda interesting how, you can actually theoretically see the entire world on the map at once, but everything outside of a 10 foot radius is exponentially compressed more and more to the point where it's impossible to actually see.
yeah haha
the timing of 10:00 is underrated tbh
i think if you hadn't reacted so genuinely i would have assumed it was scripted
tyler i was excited to watch this video because i knew you were so excited for the game. im about to watch, thank you :)
The game seems really cool but I wish there was one big storyline or goal, or there are like different biomes with different goals you are trying to reach
Both is there it's just not shown in the video (it also skips the intro for some reason that sets the basic world).
you literally just described the entire game...
There is a major: collect all the platonic crystals. There's different biomes as well, the barn and infinity cafés are the most different ones. And there's a handful of minigames. I prefer the drone flying one. Either way, I still think this game could use a lot more gameplay and polishing. Especially a "quest tracker" would be very beneficial.
There is a big storyline and goal, he just skipped all of it in the video. Hyperbolica is set in a VR type world because you fell asleep in geometry class and this small child you encounter wants you to go into all the different biomes and areas to find the five platonic crystals.
Yesss been waiting for this!!

Aliensrock giving better life hacks than most 'life hack' channels out there.
I’ve been following this for a while actually. Excited to see where it goes, since I assume there will be more
lmao i was here for this game’s devlog, and now my favorite youtuber is playing it. this is nice.
I played this in VR, I couldnt get the VR controllers to work which was annoying but it was fun to play anyway. Very wacky experience but I feel like it was generally designed to be played not in VR, VR is just a bonus option.
The building tops ARE actually curved. They curve towards the ground to maintain a uniform height. If the building roofs were straight, they would be taller at the ends.
I love the references here. First hyperbolic geometry, then the legendary "catapults vs trebuchets" thing (shoutouts to r/trebuchetmemes)... It feels like this game was kinda made for me.
Ayy, I've been following the development of this for years. Cool to see it finally out
The morbidly curious side of me wants to play this in vr
All non euclidean things look like some science fantasy about 4th dimention.
Thanks for the video!
Yo, I’ve watched all the dev logs, but I didn’t expect you to play it!
You are super cool bro ! best youtuber for me this time ! Cheers from argentina
Eyy, a youtuber I've watched a lot plays a game by a game dev I've been following for years? Couldn't get better!
I want to see this concept expanded
i only just got recommended this, but LETS GO ALIENSROCK PLAYED HYPERBOLICA
As an aspiring professional geometer, this game is awesome
Let's go! Hyperbolica! Been waiting for it! Keep up the great content Tyler! Love your vids!
Tyler quote of the day: "let's get high"
It's MOSTLY an adventure game but there's two very brief FPS sections (in the riemannian world and the final boss fight), a platforming section in the art museum, and racing minigames in the city and the frozen area
I know this video is only 13 minutes but it felt like 1. Great video
adjusting to daylight savings time, nice. Don't need to wait an extra hour to watch your great videos.
Oh so thats why he is uploading early. I thought maybe he's uploading early to make up for not posting video yesterday. We don't have daylight saving here so I didnt know :p
@@bang_lihat you are a lucky person
I was very confused why he uploaded an hour earlier than usual, now it makes sense
Another hyped video.
This is really cool!
Let ‘s gooooo i have been waiting for a non-euclidain game
The major death of the game is its pricetag. At $15 which is almost as much as Outer wilds (a 15 - 20 hour story exploration game) i just can't see any reason to buy it.
Well i actually bought it, but after 30 minutes refunded it because i saw almost everything there was. at $5 this would be a no-brain buy for me, but not $15 i'm sorry.
It’s here, yoooooo
Edit: kinda sucks that it wasn’t more puzzle-y, but it’s a great proof of concept at least.
I’ve been following this game’s development for a while. It looks even cooler now that it is out
ive already played it as well. super fun game, working on the achievements now.
I love how everything that's far away looks like a painted wall until you get close.
Are you ever going to play monument valley two?
Also you should check out this rougelike called Noita. You may just find it interesting
Hyperbolic space has the power to confuse despite you already understanding it.
This will destroy the flat earthers
The map in hyperbolical is flat but appears to curve because parallel lines don't exist.
The beginning part of it just makes it seem like you need to know a lot of fancy geometry stuff to even begin to understand how to play this game
Hyperbolic geometry is essentially the opposite of spherical geometry. In regular geometry like we’re used to, a square is made of 4 right angles and parallel lines never meet. In spherical geometry, a “square” has 3 right angles and parallel lines curve together, you can see these concepts by drawing on a globe. In hyperbolic geometry, a “square” is made up of 5 right angles and parallel likes curve away from each other. Just giving some background on hyperbolic geometry.
i’ve seen this games development for a while, seems cool visually
🤣 hadn't heard that variation of the boat owner's joke yet, bwahaha
FINALLY OUT LETS GO!!!!
This would be literally sick in vr
I eat chocolate "cereal" that has more waffle like texture, I even eat it without milk sometimes, it's really crunchy.
I can’t wait to try this out in VR
I don't know...the world seems only on a fisheye filter lens
But the three different orthographic projections interest me a lot
Step one: four milk.
Step two' poor cereal.
Step three: poor bowl.
6:16 Didn't know boat micro was the secret to happiness all along
oh god is the milk-first cereal-first conflict thing one big reference to the butter battle book
there's actually a devlog, on the channel Code Parade
That robot with the tie messed up when playing strange horniculture.
I think I'm getting motion sick watching this...
Very cool
Oh Damm! This game was inspiration to my math Internal assessment from math!
Oh god, my head.
I wanna see more of it.
This game itself can be used as a torture device if you pair it with a VR headset.
Still frickin cool.
it's a shame you didn't get to the spherical world
6:54 Me a cereal first: Sorry little one *pulls out my glock*
WOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH NEW VIDEOOOOOOO
You could play this in VR...if you want to melt your brain.
Pretty neat indeed
hyperbollica is how flat-earthers think how globes works
Lmao i was literally looking at games on steam earlier today and i saw this same game and was wondering if you've done a video on it
I'm gonna have you retract that statement about milk and cereal
HYPERBOLICA IS OUT?!!!
Actually, the gnomonic projection draws straight lines for straight objects in the world, and the pseudoorthographic projection moves everything in the same direction as the player's movement.
Cereal is just one if those things i munch on. With less messy cereal it’s a lot like chips, and you can just snack on it dry from the bowl as you work.
Oh, I’ve seen the dude’s videos on making the game. Crazy shit.
Niiiice
Some people have never been to hyperspace and it shows.
tyler's hair is pretty cool
Was wondering about all the hype in this game is about. Now i understand
Still don't really understand it, but i'll understand after some time
You should try this game in VR : D
6:10 is wonderful
