    One of the games of my childhood, glad this channel is talking about it! Started playing when 4 and was just able to beat it as an adult
    I love the mechanic of "Should I get big and have a better attack range but get hit more often, or be small and sneak around but have a terrible attack range?"
    The soundtrack is composed by Howard Drossin, the same from Comix Zone and Sonic & Knuckles, one of my favorites composers of the 16-bit era
    and by the way, collectiong the 50 DNAs is not worth it, the ending barely changes, though it is one of the hardest things to do in gaming.

      Making a romhack for easier difficulty shouldn’t be that hard to do. As long as it’s something like: get more health or make your attack more powerful or something. Maybe not losing health for using the spit attack or something?

    • @Kos4Evr
      @Kos4Evr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true. NES hard may mean something to most but Chakan was brutal beyond anything of its time. I wouldn't call it the dark souls of anything but it's brutal.

    • @MarMaxGaming
      @MarMaxGaming 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely been scared to play that one, even after all the typical NES hard like Battletoads, Silver Surfer, GnG series, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, Castlevania, Contra, etc.. but I will get to it one day, dang it.

    • @SonofSethoitae
      @SonofSethoitae 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Mystery G That's not really true though. Talking purely about the Genesis, there were a lot of great ports of American PC games (Starflight and Pirates come to mind) at the time, and Americans made games like Mortal Kombat, Chuck Rock, Rings of Power, etc.

    • @SonofSethoitae
      @SonofSethoitae 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarMaxGaming There's actually a difficulty setting in the menu. If you set it to practice mode, you get all the magic from the beginning, but more importantly you get the ability to warp to the second half of the game. Super helpful for practicing.

    • @SonofSethoitae
      @SonofSethoitae 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Mystery G Well it's not really that Americans didn't know how to make _games_ then, just platformers. Having said that, what about Vectorman? Prince of Persia? Lost Vikings? X-Men 2?
      Not to pester you, it's just that the American-made Genesis library has a weirdly bad reputation, and I'd like to leave a jumping off point for those looking for an alternate viewpoint.

    This game reeks of "90's 'tude", but when you mentioned it being developed by the same team as Comix Zone, it all made sense. At least this has more of a Toxic Avenger feel to it instead of answering the hypothetical "what if every person at Image comics got smashed into a single person, and that person had to fight inside of a COMIC BOOK?!".

  • @starlightwitch12
    @starlightwitch12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Apparently in the original Japanese version of Sonic Mega Collection this game is unlockable through a button code, but the version in Sonic Mega Collection Plus this game is fully unlocked from the start and has the title screen changed colors. (The European PS2 version has an emulation bug though, which renders the start button sometimes doesn't register.) And this game lacks continues but it has a hidden continue screen, which was unused.

    • @upstandingcitizen3877
      @upstandingcitizen3877 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      serene.velocity it says that if you have the Japanese version of the game collection you need a code to access the ooze, but you don’t need a code if you have the mega collection plus. Also beware that the European PS2 version of the mega collection has some bugs.
      Finally, the developers did make a continue screen, and it is contained in the cart memory, so they may have planned to have continues, but it was never implemented in the game.

    Plot reminds me of the Sludge comics by Malibu, which for whatever reason were just about the only ones my mom handed off to me when I was a kid. Didn't have a comic store nearby for miles, so I read what I had. Definitely quirky and edgy as all hell, and some of the more insane violence left a bit of an impression on me for a while after.

    Sega Technical Institute team has shown all throughout their career that while they were the masters of making the Genesis look and sound amazing, they are mediocre game devs at best since all their games are woefully unbalanced to the point of them being gorgeous games to experience then walk away from frustrated because of poor difficulty balancing and questionable design choices. I want to love games like this and Comix Zone for their extremely clever ideas and amazing visual style.....but when you have to save scum just to get any level of enjoyment, then you didn't make a game for anyone but psycho's who love an unfair challenge.

    • @youusedtocallmeonmyperfect8973

      Sonic Spinball is extremely solid though. Comix Zone is too hard for me, so I do agree there. I really wanna try to beat that one someday at least. Oh. And they did also make Kid Chameleon, which, while a bit below average in some areas is perfectly playable

  • @mattmillah428

    I played this on one of the first sega plug and plays..... there was sonic, columns, golden axe, the ooze, and I forget the others. They all played well and I have fond memories. There were 2 plug and plays- a blue and red one. Cant remember which one I had. But very cool 15 years ago.

  • @chiissu
    @chiissu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review. I had this as a kid and eventually beat it once. Didn't get all the DNA though so I was still pretty devolved. The style and story is the most 90s thing since Comix Zone with Toxic Waste, Evil Companies, and being gritty. I lloved it but it is pretty hard. According to GameFaqs
    In the options screen, move towards the sound test area (and be careful not to change the default controller scheme). Enter the following list of numbers, and press the C button after setting each one: 009, 019, 010, 024, 011, 013, 006, 027, 006, 088, 003, 030 If done correctly, a sound effect says "Yes!" During gameplay (or in the options menu), hold the A button and then press Start to open the stage select menu.

    fun fact based on your intro: toxic gas WAS the original treatment for cancer. They discovered it accidentally when some military personnel spilled the nitrogen mustard on themselves, and during observation they found that the contaminated personnel had dramatically lowered white cell counts. This led to the discovery of chemotherapy.

      It did get less expensive as the 90s wore on, but a common theme of STI's major titles was a lack of a battery save. Kid Chameleon, Comix Zone and the Ooze really make a good case for save states, don't they?

    • @CONYOADAMS

      With Sega, you had the benefit of having passwords and continues on some games, but then you also had ones where if you died at all, that was it (which was frustrating for Comix Zone in particular).

    When I was a little kid, I had a Sega Genesis plug n'play console with a whopping six games on it (that was not a very fun birthday). Sonic 2, Columns, Echo the Dolphin, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Gain Ground (at least I highly believe it was Gain Ground), and this game, The Ooze. Now, I only really played/could understand the first two (and that was pretending to know how Columns worked or how to get past the purple chemicals in Chemical Plant Zone Act 2). This was not a very kid-friendly package of games to get - especially Gain Ground and The Ooze. And the intro to the Ooze always scared the proverbial Ooze out of very young me - at least the opening cutscene did. From there I would have no idea what to do and die almost immediately. Whenever I think of this game, all I can remember is early childhood fear followed by very confused fear followed by immediate dying. It never really left my mind. So, I have to give it points for memorability and nothing else.

    I'll be checking this game out. I didn't hear about it until a few weeks ago.

    Damn... I thought this was one of those games that only I heard about. Yeah, I played this on Sonic Mega Collection Plus and I very fondly remember it kicking my ass.

    I had a plug and play sega genesis growing up. It had sonic 2, echo the dolphin, alex kidd and this game. I always found this game difficult but that maybe more attributed to my age, tho I remember loving the art style and overall quality

    This game is not for everyone, but does satisfy that "hard game" itch. A hidden gem.

    I had this game as a kid. Don't think I ever got past the first level.
    Also a KMFDM mention ? I think the genesis helped influence my music choices.

    Wow... So much nostalgia... My grandma bought me this game when I was 7 thinking that it was just another "sonic" game and damn that intro scene kinda fucked me up for a little while there... don't think I ever made it past the first world..
