I think as Africans we associate the song with a call for freedom which is a common theme to all of us. I am in my 50s and when I was growing up in Nigeria in the 70s, I was taught this song by my teacher. A Zimbabwean friend of mine told me that they used to sing the song when he was growing up in the 80s in Harare.
@@tonye.8023 that’s the original Nkosisikelela, this has only 2 stanzas from the original hymn. 2 stanzas are new which you wouldn’t have sung then as they are from Die Stem (apartheid anthem) and one stanza composed anew post 1994. So not exactly the song you used to sing back when SA was still under apartheid in 80s, it’s just part of that old song but not it’s in entirety. Hence this is called the new SA anthem because none of it really existed in its entirety before 1994
