    Thank you for sharing this video, just beautiful. I saw a model home yesterday with Hickory hand scraped floors yesterday, solid wood and it was beautiful. The realtor explained how they come in and lay the planks then a team comes back and scrapes, sands and finishes. Guess what? Now I want this in my house but I'm going to have to learn to do it (53 year old Grandma here).

    That's the way to do it James, I can feel the pain in my knees and back... Not certain if in the past they might have also used some sort of Stone at the end to do the final polish. I do know my Ancestors from Europe told of washing raw wood floors with some sort of stone once a year and then just finishing the floor with soap.

    • @JaOrhoj
      @JaOrhoj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dusty Splinters I know that in Denmark you might use some type of chalk. I have some old floors from the 40's and I simply use an old school soap finish when they look like they need it. The great thing about the soap finish is that it is easy to reapply and it feels amazing to walk on barefooted afterwards.

      @DustySplinters When I was in the US Navy about 35 years ago, I was temporarily stationed on one of the oldest ships in the fleet. It was built before WW2 and had a teak deck. I spent most of my time on that ship in dry dock, replacing the decking. There were several scrubbing stones in the Bosun's locker used for conditioning the deck. They had 2 ropes attached at opposite ends. You'd have 2 sailors standing opposite each other with the stone in the middle. They'd alternately pull on their ropes to move the stone back and forth across the deck. They also had several smaller stones on broomsticks to get into tight places.

    James, I'm sure you've already had a number of people call you crazy and nuts for attempting it but, you did a great job. Sometime in a past life I remember seeing someone (perhaps it was my grandfather) using a plane made specifically for smoothing floors. It was a very large wooden coffin plane with an iron that was probably around 4" wide. Instead of kneeling and scraping the way you did, this thing had a long T-handle that attached to he body right behind the iron. You used the same body mechanics as you would an old fashioned push mower. If you ever decide to install another floor, you might save your back and make yourself one of those. (I doubt you'll find one outside of a museum these days).

    I'm planning on putting a hardwood floor down in a 200 Sq/ft room this summer, partly thanks to this video. I'm worried about planing and scraping in tight spaces, such as right next to the wall. Do you have any footage or tips relating to this part of the process? Could you do a follow up, showing the condition after two years, maybe answer any common questions you received?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. That might actually be a good idea to do a follow up video. if I did it would probably be on the second channel. It has been holding up great. Getting up close to the wall isn't any problem at all for hand tools. It's a lot easier than it is for a sander. But that being said if I were to do this and not make a video I would go rent a sander. Just so much faster.

    • @harveyhaines5383
      @harveyhaines5383 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WoodByWright Thanks for the response! I do hope you make another video!
      If time weren't a concern, which would you go with, hand or machine finishing? I worry about screwing up the floor with a sander; I hate the idea of putting in all the effort and ending up with a big sanding drum mark or something of the sort. Though, perhaps a new floor doesn't need a drum sander, maybe one of those Orbital sanders is enough. Your opinion on the subject will weigh heavily in my decisions here!

  • @HPCthulhu2011
    @HPCthulhu2011 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've sanded a reclaimed hardwood floor but it does not look good because a sander does not get the floor flat and also breathing in the dust including the old hardwood finish is not good, you have to scrape it flat with a hand smoother plane except it is taking me months to do that and my stomach muscles are sore and needing to recuperate after every two 3 hour long scraping sessions but it does work just fine and the very start of it is the hardest part, it is almost (85% just like brand new) the same as a brand new floor instead of being 30 years old. If you want an easier way than just install completely new hardwood flooring instead but unless you have a very specialized sander like the ones you ride like a riding lawn mower.

  • @sapelesteve

    I really thought that you were NUTS after watching the installation video. However, I now know that NUTS & CRAZY do not compute after watching this video. Beautiful finish! Two things I wonder: would it be possible to see a before and after? And, with how shiny it is, is it slick as snot in stocking feet? I helped make a spiral stair with a finish that shiny and after installing it I had to be careful going up and down because it was treacherous if I wasn't. (I'm guessing and/or hoping the owner put in something like carpet after we were done and gone).

      I might put up a before and after picture later I just have not put one together yet. Waterlox is actually a very grippy surfice in socks. you really can not slide on it.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed. Stanley made a floor plane that would have made this a lot easier. Unfortunately they cost somewhere between $1,000 and $1,500 as there are very highly collectible.

    When pulling your plane switch hands. Looks to b ur right handed. Using strong hand in rear position of plane when pulling gives more controll, you will pull more than push if that makes sense.

    Why does it look like there are ripples in the finish? Is that the lighting or something in the finish? Also, the way you applied the waterlox, did you not get lap marks? If not I'm impressed with the product. Great job.

    How do you "update" the finish in a few years if/when the Waterlox fades or gets worn down?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have not had to do that. but if you are talking about scuffs and scratches. Ihe easiest thing to do would be to put down one thin coat on top. that will fill in any scratches and give it a new shine.

      @@WoodByWright thanks for the reply. One more question: in the video you mentioned linseed oil, but the when I look at the Waterlox site it references Tung oil. Can you clear up my confusion? Thanks.

    Is the #2 oak less expensive? If so, is that why you chose it or was it due to some combo of looks/cost?
    Also is your wife jealous of how excited you get about finishing wood? :P

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL she knows she shares me with my wood collection! #2 Common has a lot more wild and figured boards. #1 is even more so, but tends to have a lot more open knots that are really hard to fill. it is cheaper, but that is just a nice side effect.
