Hi Matt, thanks for the video. Semi-unrelated question if you have time. I have a '94 4-Runner V6 with a 3.0 and I broke one of the spark plugs off. Five came out nice and the sixth one snapped even with penetrating oil and a breaker bar. Fook. I plan on using a #5 and then possibly a #6 extractor after drilling out the plug with the appropriate drill-bit. Been using Kroil penetrating oil for about a day now, around five applications. Any advice? Should I just pay the shop rate of $150 an hour and have them do it? I've used extractors before but never on a plug. Done plenty of tune-ups and this is the first plug that's ever broken on me. I'd appreciate your suggestions if you have time. Thanks a lot!

Great videos man!! I'm going to be doing a 2005 4runner timing cover soon. I watched your 4 part tear down video and it was awesome. Do you have any of the torque specs for reassembly? Could we exchange emails?
The chains should last the life of the engine if taken care of. But if you ever have to go in there for say blown head gasket it might be worth replacing. Chain will stretch over time but normally not enough to cause a issue.
So, from my understanding is you want to center the yellow timing chain link with the mark on the crank and the two orange marks on each bank of cams will correspond with the timing marks there. Is this correct? If so, would this mean your chain was installed incorrectly?
Sebastian - I had this question too. While the timing chain may rotate a single time, the gears it is connected to rotate many times. That means that the cams and crank are in the correct TDC position many times during the timing chain rotation, but those special links are only in the right spot one time. You can continue to rotate the engine until the links and all of the marks line up but that could be many rotations before the chain finally lines up.
So I have all my exhaust and intake marks lined up, cylinder one lobes are up and pointed in, I tapped the top of the 1st piston head and it's in the 'up" position, and on the crankshaft gear the upper notch is at the 11 o'clock position and in line with the marking on the block, and the notch on the crankshaft is at 9 o'clock. However, the notch on the crankshaft gear with teeth that is also supposed to be at 9 o'clock is not there. There are some teeth on the gear that are missing in this area. Am I lined up?
I’m replacing the valve cover gaskets on my 4.0 everything is going smooth except for all the connectors that hold the wires in place. Could you make a video about how to disconnect plastic connectors of all the various types. It blows my mind how some of these little plastic pieces are so important to know how to operate. Personally the more I work on modern vehicles the more I want an old vehicle pre electronics

I think you meant cam lobes, not valve lobes. Great video! I’ve got a 2007 Altima with a VQ 3.5 connected to a 6-speed manual. Fun car!

doing head gaskets on a 2005 tacoma 4.0 with 150k on it. do you recommend replacing timing chains at the same time? do you recommend using oem?

When should you replace your timing chain? How many miles?

yes if you have set TDC then you are good.

Yes sounds like you are lined. I would reset tdc manually after removing the chain and installing a new gear with new teeth for ref.
