I read that you don't want the figs close to the house cuz they can damage your foundation by sucking up all the moisture or getting under the slab you don't have any problems with your foundation or worries?
Hi there! I wouldn't want to advise you about planting fig trees close to your house. I'm not familiar with what type of foundation you have or anything else about your individual situation. Personally, I've had fig trees planted next to my home for 44 years and I grew up with relatives that also had them growing against their houses for as far back as I can remember. In all that time, there has never been a problem that I am aware of. Still, it should be a personal decision based on your individual situation, and I can't advise you on that decision. Sorry! Good luck and Happy Figs! Lou Monti
When did you cut your RDB back to 2'? My Chicago Hardy died back to the ground (I'm zone 7a also) and now multiple new branches are coming up from the ground should I remove some or let them all grow?
Well, that depends on many factors. Here is an important few. If your not going to cover and protect, then I would let the tree form an aimless bush form, as many Die Backers do. However, if your plan is to intercede with the inevitable, and to make winterization modifications, then, I would remove less desirable branches and attempt to shape the tree so as to aid in its future production. Good luck! Lou Monti
