I was there! "Spirit" absolutely levitated that Stage when they came on in the very late afternoon. I was right up front to the right 50-100 feet from the stage with 135,000 people out behind me. It was utterly profound! Does anyone have the order of the Bands over the two days?
Last year 4.5 hours of music recirded from the audience at the 1st Atlanta Pop festival surfaced on TH-cam. Included is about a 2 minute portion of 'I Got A Line On You'. Also circulating are complete sets from Canned Heat, Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and Al Kooper, plus music from CCR. Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Spirit. Link to Spirit: th-cam.com/video/vE-UByynhI8/w-d-xo.html Theentire 4.5 hour playlist is in the sidebar.
Page said he'd never heard Spirit's music while testifying at the last plagiarism hearing brought by Randy California's estate. I don't think there was a case, but Jimmy lied about that and I don't mean this festival necessarily. Every Rock guitarist knew who they were and took note of California's work.....
Considering that Spirit performed right before Led Zeppelin took the stage at the Atlanta Pop Festival, it's very likely Page & Co. heard or saw Spirit's performance. And Zeppelin did open a few shows for Spirit in late 1968-early 1969, so it is bullshit that Zeppelin was not aware of Spirit, especially when considering that Zeppelin performed snippet's of "Fresh Garbage" (from Spirit's debut album) as part of a medley that Zeppelin performed in 1968-early 1969, it's a bit of a stretch for Page to claim ignorance as far as his knowledge of the band. The most laughable thing is that there is an old audio recording of an interview that Page gave to Zig-Zag magazine (circa 1971) that circulates in which Page cites Spirit as one of his favorite bands. Perhaps that audio recording should have been submitted as evidence.
@@mikefannon6994 I was there too. I was right up front 100 feet from the stage. I thought Led Zeppelin opened for Spirit? Maybe my memory is wrong? I just remember the falling of the light as Evening was coming during Spirit's set. It was other worldly. They levitated that place into a pink then purple sky. And I was on no drugs at all!
@@jackflaherty6214 Thanks for your post! But are you sure of that order? I was there right up front and I remember it that Led Zeppelin played first and then Spirit came on at dusk opening with "When I Touch You" which was spectacular. In essence Led Zeppelin opened for Spirit? It was a total vibe change from Led Zeppelin and was highly noticeable. Dusk was very slowly falling or something as there was a sudden change in light in the sky. Like a pink sky. I distinctly remember this and I was NOT on any drugs! Just being there in the amazing vibe of the place was enough to feel like you were on a completely other Planet. It was my greatest vibe from the 1960's and has stayed with me all my life!
Great photos
What wonderful memories...
That was nice! Thanks for posting!
Thanks, Phillip. Love your pictures and stories also.

You are right. I was at the first Atlanta Pop Festival and remember both bands.
