Not to mention, Mr. Murray (a great friend of our pipe organ firm) is a first rate, master of orchestral transcriptions, right along side Peter Conte ! Peter knows the Wanamaker instrument like no other, and Tom understands the Woolsey Hall organ intimately as well.
It is funny, one comment made in the negative turns into a band wagon where most everyone seems to concur the negative!! My organ teacher always said, "Lets concentrate on the good notes that were played, and not the bad."

This great work was originally intended to be debuted in Philadelphia in 1928 at Wannamaker's and was commissioned by its owner. However, the concert was cancelled when the owner, Rodman Wannamaker, died. It wasn't performed there until 2008.

Very true, and I was there to hear it played for the 150th anniversary Macy's celebration. What a night that was, history was made! I was very honored that a photo I took during that performance was placed in the CD booklet and remained on the website for many years 😊.

I wish the organist hadn't immediately tried to drag the tempo in the first movement. Very hard to listen to it.

One gets the impression that both orchestra and organist were in over their heads. A valiant effort, but very unsatisfying.

Joseph Jongeen was a Belgium composer, marked by the influence of the Franch school. When he is known (which is too rar), it is generally through miniatures or chamber music. Here, he shows that he is able to build up ambitious archiyectures (a concerting symphony with a great organ). The composer proves among others his skills in musical large architecture, in ample developments, and in terms of orchestration, his skills io differentiate the orchestral woodwinds and the organ. This should change the image of the composer. Thanks for posting.

Belgian is not French. They have a different flavor to their music, closer to Dutch.

@@nonenoneonenonenone What's your point? Most people of any intelligence know the difference between French and Belgian but there was and continues to be a very close connection. The greatest "French" organist/composer of all time was Belgian - his name was César Franck in case you haven't heard of him.

The recording has many drawbacks, probably due to misplaced microphones; the keyboard work is fuzzy, leaving the impression of mistakes in timing plus false notes. The organ can hardly be heard in passages where it should prevail with brilliance and grace. Sorry, but there are far better recordings of this prodigious masterpiece by Joseph Jongen out there, including at least one by the same organist, Thomas Murray. The above is especially true in the second movement.

This is honestly the first performance of this piece I did not enjoy listening to. The tempo was too slow, the strings suffered from a lack of togetherness, the horns, woodwinds, and trumpet were horribly out of tune for some phrases, and the organist was un-inventive in his registration, not to mention that awful blunder at the start of the Divertimento and mistakes throughout the Toccata Allegro. Perhaps I could forgive if they had been minimal but the whole performance was riddled with them, are they ALL sight reading this piece for the first time?!
Sadly, a truly great piece, tarnished by an uninspired performance.
I can’t blame them though, any conductor of a college symphony shouldn’t dream of touching this piece. The students are not ready for such a work yet.
(I'm sure Joseph "Jungen" would concur)

Yup, everyone's a critic.....whats that about 'if you can't say anything nice'...... You might think Ryan that this was the Berlin Phil, or the BSO ? Come on, give it a break !
My only wish is that this was recorded in TRUE STEREO which it is not. We are not hearing what the audience heard for which the piece was composed. That is all.....

@@garysmith8455 The trick with amateur orchestras is to choose repertoire that they can pull off convincingly. That saves frustration both on the part of the musicians and the audience, and it gives the orchestra a chance to truly shine. Jongen's Symphonie Concertante is a very complex piece, that even professional orchestras often struggle with. Yes, they gave it their all but it was an error of judgment to have them play it.

I wish the uploader was more proficient and had paid more attention to details: in the opening screen both the composer's name and the composition's name are WRONG: He wrote 'JUNGEN' instead of JONGEN, and 'Concertante...' instead of 'Symphonie Concertante'...'.
Ignorance has no respect, and neither limits!
