Matt Healy (The 1975) Speaks About the Ethical Dilemma of Playing Coachella

  • Earlier today Matt Healy from The 1975 stopped by the Alt 98.7 sound studio for an intimate performance & interview - and WOW it was amazing.
    It started with a solo/acoustic 3 song performance - which included an INCREDIBLE previously unreleased song which will blow your mind Then went into a very open, honest and heartfelt conversation about Coachella and why he liked being there and why he didn't like being there
    While acknowledging what an incredible platform Coachella is for a band, he also wasn't shy about bringing up some controversy surrounding Philip Anschutz, the owner of Coachella's parent company AEG
    From The Daily Beast:
    A few years ago, The Washington Post revealed that the often-problematic festival’s issues went way beyond appropriative accessories. A 2016 report on America’s “enemies of equality” is often cited as blowing the lid off Coachella and its founder, Philip Anschutz, the owner of entertainment conglomerate AEG. The Freedom for All Americans campaign reported that Anschutz, one of the richest people in America with a net worth of $12.9 billion, gave large sums of money to the Alliance Defending Freedom, the National Christian Foundation, and the Family Research Council. According to the Post, the National Christian Foundation “funds a lot of the groups aggressively working to chip away at the equal rights of LGBT Americans.”
    Here's what Healy had to say...

    as artists all we can do is make art and hope people listen but i feel like coachella is not the place to create change, things like ariana grande displaying the pride flag there etc. doesn't help, the festival just lets them have the stage for the moment and still makes the money. the crowd is young people who know but still buy the tickets and go and it's like everyone just put their minds aside to go attend it.

    • @tegen3093
      @tegen3093 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      tasminemma I disagree, I think that artists should try and make change at coachella, yes coachella is making lots of money but they would be making just as much money if, say, Ariana grande didn’t present the pride flag. The fact that coachella is so big means that it has such a massive platform for artists like Matty to give their messages and know that people will hear them (because of the mainstream popularity). The main audience is also young and impressionable so if the artists are giving out positive messages then that can only be a good thing xx

    • @munchiiez9600
      @munchiiez9600 5 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Tegen Y as if showing a flag is going to produce as significant amount of change as not performing would? The owner doesn’t care wtf you do up there, because at the end of the day you’re giving him what he wants (money/publicity for his festival), which allows him to continue his hateful rhetoric without any problems. Acting like something so small is ‘activism’ is counterproductive and just adds to the problem of indifference toward those in power that hold those sort of negative views.

    • @tegen3093
      @tegen3093 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      MUNCHIIEZ obviously I do see where your coming from, however, like matty said in the interview, if an artist is to deny a show like this based on the fact that they don’t like their principles or whatever almost every artist would be denying every show (this isn’t me excusing any behaviour btw). This means that unfortunately artists are going to perform at coachella either way so why not make the most of their influence on stage to spread a good message? I do see where you are coming from tho and there is always more than one side of a story 🤷‍♀️

    • @munchiiez9600
      @munchiiez9600 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Tegen Y there are plenty of music festivals put on by great people, though. Boycotting one thing doesn’t mean boycotting everything. And in this case, with Coachella being as big as it is, I feel it’s really important for power to be taken away from the people that own it. It’s a true statement that there’s not really anywhere that has a ‘morally clean’ slate that you can work with out there, but morals are different for everyone, and what is morally clean really does vary in severity. These things that people would boycott Coachella for are, mainly, two very basic things that we as a society have agreed is very wrong. Deciding that saying no to performing at one specific festival = saying no to every festival is a very untrue statement, and really does seem quite dismissive of what the people who are affected by the hateful rhetoric of the owner of Coachella are trying to say. (I don’t have a huge problem with smaller bands, such as The 1975, saying yes. I feel it is really irresponsible for people like Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, The Weeknd, etc., to say yes to performing at events like this. Their names alone will bring in such a huge number of people, and will therefore bring an insane amount of money to the festival, which, at the very least, is directly contributing putting money into the pockets of the people holding these sort of beliefs.)

    I agree, I think that as an artist he should be using opportunities such coachella who has these negative affiliations to spread his message of equality because it is such a large stage and will get a lot of attention. I think the issue lies more within the consumer who doesn’t acknowledge the affiliations that coachella has and chooses to ignore them. If you choose to go to coachella and they do not align with your beliefs it’s important to acknowledge them as an influencer. It’s influencers (youtubers or whoever) who go and ignore the connotations that coachella has but then later spread messages of equality, it just comes off as slightly hypocritical. They should acknowledge them instead of trying to sweep it under the rug, it’s not as if they don’t know about it because it is been a big deal this year.

    • @carlynrobertson813
      @carlynrobertson813 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Cory and I agree but I don’t think he’s acting like he hates coachella, I think he is stating that he doesn’t align himself with those beliefs. My point is that he is acknowledging the dilemma of playing coachella because they are controversial and do have discriminatory beliefs but they are also a massive stage that provide him and his band with an opportunity to spread something other than hate to thousands of people. He is using that opportunity to not be hateful. You’re right maybe he isn’t outright saying “fuck you coachella” while he’s on stage but their music is one of unity and does spread messages of equality to listeners and festival goers. Also don’t you think we should give him props for at least acknowledging the situation rather than pretending it doesn’t exist like other influencers and celebrities do.

In 2016 Healy said over and over to crowd how excited he was to be at Coachella.
      Now months after doing it, he's trying to act like coachella is not his scene or something.
      He's not Kurt Cobain, he's a pop star that dresses in costumes and dances on stage like Freddie Mercury. Which is fine, like i said I enjoyed them at Coachella both times, but why does he do coachella and then a month later act like he felt weird about it? He didn't, he just wants to play up this anti-commercialism, "artist" thing and it drives me nuts.
      The worst part is when he said "well it's important to do these mainstream things and then remind and challenge the audiences way of thinking" except HE DIDN"T FUCKING DO THAT! He played it twice, and didn't challenge or say anything. He's a poser.
      He came to United States, was so stoked to play coachella, and then goes home to Britain to slag it off. I think it's ridiculous and it's why the 1975 will never be famous in America. We liked Oasis because Oasis was honest about their ambitious, their drives, and didn't give a fuck about creating some fake image. Healy wants to be famous as Oasis but perceived as Kurt Cobain, challenging the system, blah blah blah. He's a pop star doing pop star things but wants artistic credit so bad.
      I'm a pretty big fan of the 1975, but as someone who goes to Coachella every year, has a blast with awesome people, it's beyond insulting to play the festival and then talk shit about it afterwards. Coachella is not as superficial as people think. If you watch it on tv of course you would get that perception. The truth is the vast majority of people that go to Coachella are there for the music. He's been twice, he knows better.
      Every interview i've ever seen with Matt Healy makes me like him less. His music is great, so are his performances, but Matt is a poser to the point where he's actually insulting.

      @@carlynrobertson813 i see what you're saying about not supporting venues and promoters, but the responsibility to boycott those are on the 1975's shoulders, not us average music consumers. If they didn't play places, we wouldn't go. It's not fair for them to profit from playing a show and then acting all bitter, calling it "superficial", etc.
      The 1975 is the one in the position of power to change things here, but they chose to play the festival and make money from it, even though they clearly realize the ethical dilemma. They knew what and who they were supporting and they just did it anyway. And then had the audacity to act righteous about it afterwards. The 1975 get no credit for their righteous stance unless they actually fucking practice it themselves.
      He sang and danced on that coachella stage 4 times. I was there for two of those times, he was excited to do it. This interview is disgusting.

    As an annual Coachella goer. Outside of the Beyonce year, majority of the crowd IS there for the music. The people just there to be seen are definitely in the minority, just a vocal minority. And it's what you see all over social media. But if you spend an entire weekend on the grounds, its definitely for music lovers. It gets a bad rep that isn't accurate for the most part. The people who run Coachella may have certain affiliations but the festival goers dont reflect that.

      ChawletMelk I’m glad someone’s speaking facts. I’ve gone before, haven’t been in many years, but I still have a ton of friends who go, and they go for the music. Also, I don’t get the bad rep part. I think people read and believe what they want to believe. Yea, AEG owns goldenvoice, but only part owner in Coachella. Also, AEG owns so so many things throughout the world, I think Coachella is just getting singled out.

I agree with everything he had to say. I would like to think that there are some major hardcore fans that do the coachella experience primarily for the music. Would have to disagree about Beyonce and Daft Punk being the only iconic performances at Coachella though. I have never been, but i hope to go one day where the lineup matches my tastes. I was there from the UK for the music and these guys put on the best gig of weekend 2 (excluding the weird and wonderful world of Mr K West!). Ironic really when you travel 10k miles from the UK and end up enjoying a band from the UK the most (nice round off for me, having seen them in 2013 at Reading Festival when they were way down the bill!).
    It's an odd but amazing place all in one, is Coachella. It's easy to assume that everyone there is there for the 'gram pictures and that the crowds are ignorant of the music but i think the fact this year didnt sell out proves that this isnt necessarily the case. Once the lineup was released there wasn't a truly massive name as a headliner for the type of festival it is and many tickets went unsold.
    Don't misunderstand me though. There are soooo many people there who are only there to be seen to be there and couldn't give 2 hoots about any of the performers. Which is odd for me because UK festivals are all about the music, the atmosphere (the beer!) and not a lot else.
    Must admit i didnt know of the controversy but have done a lot more reading on the issues with the parent company since i got back and agree with Matty on those issues. I had an amazing weekend and would go back but i'd need some evidence that Anschultz is perhaps bringing his company in to the 21st century.

    It’s interesting because regarding the issue of coachella not being somewhere where people attend for music/live shows - I feel like that’s mostly a weekend 1 problem. All of the celebrities and social media influencers go weekend 1, so most of them are there to work. They’re not there for shows. The people that attend weekend 1 are generally wealthier and there for the clout. I just got back from weekend 2 and the vibe was so so different. People were really excited for the musicians. Each concert felt like a hug or a kumbaya session because everyone was just so excited to hear the bands that they loved so so much. At the 1975 show, everyone around us was a Stan and just really enjoying every second of their music and performance. We laughed and felt camaraderie. Maggie Rogers was similar - Maggie cried and so did like everyone in the audience because we were just so so happy to see her and hear her and be a part of such a special live show for her career. I also noticed so so so many queer couples at weekend 2. As a gay woman, it felt great, and most of the artists were very blunt and clear about their support for the LGBT community. Matty discussed it, and every time someone in the crowd held up a pride flag, the camera people would specifically give a lot of time to those flags on the monitors. I hope matty was surprised and impressed by the differences at weekend 2, but who knows. Maybe it’s all in my head.

Even hearing them 200x over, while listening to the lyrics I loved it. Now..... he’s just became too self centered, too much politically emotional. Even doubting his genre for god sake!
