      Southport is a mix of the genteel and the grubby; It has a wealthier elderly population, retirees from Manchester, Liverpool and the Lancashire towns, with a large number of care and nursing homes, together with some elements that have migrated from Liverpool, which is not far. Lord Street, the main shopping road, was a very upmarket arcade type place back in the day, with grand hotels and cafes. It's a shadow of its former self. The ugly Promenade is a sea wall. Even though the tide goes out seemingly for miles, high tide and storm surge used to flood the sea front. Scary to drive on the Marine Parade when it's under water and you can't see the edge.

    Southport was a lovely town in the 1950’s and 60’s. The Prince of Wales was a top class hotel, which many a first division team stayed in before playing Everton or Liverpool. Lord Street was a very upper class shopping experience at one time. These days it’s full of charity shops. Saturday night use to be a good night, especially The Kingsway. Not a place I would recommend visiting.

    Sefton council have ruined Southport, I know I live there. They sold the sand off to Rainfords for 5p a load for a 60 ton quarry truck load , the sand off the beach was glacial till deposited from a glacia 15,000 years ago. They also allowed the RSPB to plant an invasive species of grass on the beach in order to make the place unviable. We need to make Southport great again!

      @@meganjb10you can tell as many lies as you want but we've all seen videos of the RSPB and the council planting the grass and also I remember seeing the signs on our beaches forbidding ball games and BBQs in the early 200"s. Are you denying that the sand wasn't mined from the Whitehorse bank and that the government didn't intervene to halt it? The marshes stopped at the sand factory and the rest was sand. They planted an invasive species of grass to take over the beach apparently for carbon capture which is totally insane as it releases methane which is a much more potent green house gas than carbon dioxide. The beach was a glacial deposit from 15,000 years ago and it remained a beach throughout all the natural climate changes,during heating and cooling cycles!

My friend lives in Magul we used to go a few times to Southport and Liverpool before lockdown, its a shame things closing down.

    I finally bought something from Amazon last year, after waiting for over 15 years to buy anything online (I don't trust online purchasing or support it) and within an hour I had hundreds of pounds stolen from my bank account.
    I called up the bank and Amazon but neither seemed shocked or even apologetic. They refunded me immediately but since then I wont buy anything online ever again in my life.

      @@swally4704 Really. I bought an electric scooter innertube for £15, and then started to get messages from my bank saying £50 has been withdrawn, £150, £100, ect. All within an hour.
      When I called up Amazon they apparently understood, didn't question it, refunded me and didn't investigate. This tells me it's a multi billion dollar business.

And did you know it is rumoured that Napoleon based his tree lined boulevards in paris on Southports main drag with the tree lined road! Also lots of Scum in Southport so be careful. all fur coat and no knickers as we say in Liverpool.

      Lots of it was, still is! Southport is a very diverse town and highly recommend the author of site visits Hillside (station right next to a pleasant walking area), stunning houses including one called the 'Round House which is literally just that, opposite an open area by the golf course, walk the other way to a small and pleasant area of shops, walk back to the station via the small pine woods area, that is yet another part of the town folk forget, just as they forget Ainsdale beach which is beautiful and Churchtown and Botanic Gardens. We love our days out in the area.

    If you went over the Mersey gateway bridge at any point, just to let you know there's a £2 toll each way you can pay it online if you need to within 24 hours, I got a ticket in the post (twice) once on the way and once on the way home for going to Southport and staying in that Travel lodge at the start of your video, because I didn't know about it.

    • @deniseroney
      @deniseroney 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, we got stung with that as well, pure robbery as we had no idea about the tolls or anything, we had always used the 'old bridge'. There was no indication of how to pay either on the bridge or even online when we got home plus its just a very short time they give you to pay, hours literally so you get done!!

    Shrewsbury is waiting for you Charlie. Only an hour and a bit away by train. Population as of 2022 is around 80k the town and 108k the urban. Its historic, probably right up their with Chester. Castle, Roman Walls, river loop, world's first skycraper(Ditherington Flax Mill), worlds tallest single doric column and all the Charles Darwin stuff with added Quantum Leap sculpture to boot. Oh and Percy Throwers famous The dingle garden in the quarry. The place will keep you busy and along with everywhere else there's a few dodgy people and buildings. 🤣
